  1. Yeah mate sweet as how's the boat did u get the problems sorted fingers crossed for no wind and plenty of sun on Sunday :)

they patched it up to work on Tuesday and I had no probs, today they replaced the faulty alternator and they assured me its fixed, that's what they said time :)

you better bring some oars if we go out just in case

  2. yeah that's the spot, I don't know if you can view it somewhere, but Al Macglahson has 30 minute show on it, they caught heaps of them in between the boat moorings and they got them during the day

if you view the show, you can see where they fished

I gave it a crack there about 4 weeks ago, got not hairies, but we got few decent trevally, a big flattie and some big tailer, so even if they are not there, there is some fun bi-catch

worth a shot, you need ganged pilies on very a light sinker on light spinning gear and drop it about half way down, its only 8m deep

  3. great work boys i hate when you have problems like that and they always seem to happen when the fish are on

thats amazing that you got a rat king that far out

those tuna look really big and those lures catch every thing

    cheers sydneyfisher12

yeah I know I never caught a kingie that wide before, we should have used it as a BFT skip bait

  4. Hair tail are one of those amazing creatures that randomly come and go at the drop of a hat, i come across one at Balmoral off the jetty in January this year, another mate got one off Gladesville.

They have apparently been on in Newcastle for the last month but according to a pro fisho mate the numbers are down on the last couple of seasons.

    Cheers

    Andy

yeah true, right place right time scenario, the coal and candle creek is way more consistent for them than Sydney Harbour, but what the hell I will give 40 baskets another go

  5. Finally got out there, had electrical problems on our last 2 tuna fishing attempts and turned back both times, too risky to be 40NM out with a faulty boat, so common sense prevailed. This time my electrician assured me it was fixed. We left the dock around 9am to fuel up, unbelievable the boat played up going to the fuel dock and wouldn’t start after we refuelled. Arghhh!!!! Rang the electrician, his shop was nearby and Graham came over. After 2 and half hours we finally found the problem and had a solution to get it running.

I had 2 people on standby at Lavender Bay to pick-up. I called them and said it’s a really late start and we won’t get much fishing in but FU*CK IT lets go if you are still keen, we picked them up and we fanged it out there. We stopped for one minute to take a photo of a whale. I setup the gear on the way out going at 20-25 knots, crammed all the lures and teasers with pilchards so everything was really to haul out when reached our destination which was about 5MN NE of Browns.

By the way there looked like there were 50 boats on Browns as we went past it.

Finally we were trolling towards Heatons, 10 minutes into it and we hooked a small kingfish, never caught a kingfish that wide before. About 20 minutes later got a hook up on bigger fish but dropped it, probably a SBT. 20 minutes later hooked a BFT which stuck, landed it in around in 15 minutes, it was fat fish and we had to tail wrap and gaff it to pull it board.

After a bit of back slapping we decided to make our way back, we were happy with the one BFT, shit loads of tuna for everyone, no reason to kill another. So we put one lure out with a circle hook on a light trace so if we did get another fish we could release it easily.

Good luck to anyone heading out!

  6. we got out very late, had freaking electrical problems, didn't leave Sydney Heads until 1pm, was so pissed off, I was a moody pric$ all morning

got 5NM wide of browns around 2.15pm and stuck the lures and teasers out, got a hookup on small fish straight away, it was small kingfish, never caught one out that wide before

headed towards heatons, got a hook up on bigger fish and dropped it, about 20 minutes later got a BFT, took about 15 minutes to land, not sure how big, had to gaff and rope its tail to get it into the boat, might be up to 100kg, got photos and video, will post a report tommorrow

we only trolled about 1hr and half, got the BFT and said F+CK it, that will do and headed back :)

    so they are out there

  7. I was planning on starting at the southern canyons then heading east.

yeah that's probably the best bet for fish, got a northerly in the arvo, so I will probably start at browns and go north to the northern canyons and about 10 mile east from that then head back in the with wind behind me

  8. I lost my gps marks about 3 months ago and got my marks for Heatons off the internet, I have the same mark as you have, we probably got them from the same place

the map is the money, however I do know that both Browns and Heatons usually fish better around it and not directly over it, the reason being if currents are hitting those mounds the upwelling that pushes the food up for the bait fish to feed on is usually a few miles away from the peaks, so the mark you have is probably not a bad one, it looks like that mark is a few miles off the actual mound

  9. The hole of the end of the wharf at Clifton Gardens is one of the more prodcutive spots for hairtail but as Reubs says its

    all pretty random.

no probs, yeah that spot is forty baskets, I go fishing near there with my dad and the kids sometimes, might start archoring the boat in amongst the moorings next time, its worth a shot

Cowan Creek is more consistent, but it can be pretty random there as well, I wonder if the moon phases make a difference

  10. Hi Peter,

I've heard that hairies are a bit of a random catch in the harbour and they can just turn up but don't tend to hang around in particular spots like hey do in the hawkesbury.. To be fair that's just what I've heard but others on here may know better :)

    Reubs

i think the spot is 40 baskets in north harbour around manly but they have to be on the bite ive also heard they turn up at the water around taronga zoo

    Yeh

I watch an episode of Big Fish Small Boats with Alistair McGlashin and he got heaps of hairtail at taronga zoo

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

yeah it was a show with Al Mc on Fox, ok I google earthed it, the best matching location I found is Forty Baskets. Its not too far away from Clifton Gardens where I know they do get them sometimes.

i'll give it a go at some stage and let you know how I go
