  1. G’day raiders,

Over the recent weeks I’ve had a lot of discussions around boating safety. This has made me take a look heavily at my own safety equipment and plan should anything happen whilst out on the water.
Whilst it is compulsory to wear a life jacket crossing a coastal bar, at night, when solo, in open waters vessels less than 4.8m etc, this type of floatation only keeps the individual afloat, then what?

    Here’s a question for you.........

If your vessel is about to sink and you only have 60 seconds to grab what you need to save you and your passengers life, would you be able to get everything you need in the panic?

Now, I want you to actually have a really good think about where you keep all your safety equipment on your boat? Then think of the worst place that you travel if the boat was to sink. Could you grab all your safety gear whilst instructing others in that time?

After rescuing those four spear fisherman a few weeks ago, I’ve had many thoughts that at any time that could be me. I’m on the water probably more than most. So for me it was a no brainer to invest in the LifeCell.

The entire point to this post is that even us experienced fishos become complacent when it comes to safety (me included) but I just want everyone to have a think about your safety gear and your plan should the worst case scenario present itself.
Don’t have the attitude that “IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME”.

    Tight lines all,

    cheers scratchie!!!

P.S. it’s also a good storage place for your wallet, keys phone etc!!! 🤙

  2. Good to see you back out and about Yowie! Tailor at night are absolutely ravenous. Well, you got a feed as usual and a fishing fix, so good night out! Hope the knee is feeling better!

    cheers scratchie!!!

  3. Thank you everyone for the well wishes for Cruz. He definitely has a long road to recovery. But he’s home now and on the Xbox playing games and watching footy! I’ll give him two days before the frustration sets in! Lol 😝

He’s definitely been given some inspiration from a few NRL players to get him motivated. Fingers crossed all goes well.

    cheers scratchie!!!

  4. Well........ wow, what a drain the last 7 days have been!
Spent 4 days in Port Macquarie with 3 of my kids all competing at State Cup for touch football, only to be rained out and pretty much cabin bound. Came home and the young fella bought a new car and then we were back into kids sport!
Tuesday came round and I knew @mrsswordfishermanwas having an operation so I sent her a message wishing her well.
Then off to another rugby league trial for my youngest to make Hunter RL. At this trial he had already made the team but in the last game of the day, he went out to help the others, which proved tragic.
He ended up breaking both his tib and fib and dislocated his ankle. It looked surreal. But the support he got from his coach and the rugby league community has been overwhelming.
Whilst laying there his club coach came over and was so upset he thought he needed to do something to lift him up! What proceed has been overwhelming for my son!
Messages from...... Jordan Rikki, Isaac Luke, Kenny Bromwich, Benji Marshall, James Fisher-Harris and also one of our own fishraiders that plays for the Newcastle Jets!
Back home now and all is very quiet! Hope it stays that way for a week!

    cheers scratchie!!!

  5. Awesome rummers! That’s a great spot for them especially around 2hrs to low and low! That’s when I target them there. My son has the bug too with his new little tinny. Haven’t really chased them in ages, might have to give it a go! Thanks for the report 🤙

    cheers scratchie!!!

  6. I’m up at Port Mac at the moment and it hasn’t stopped raining for 3 days.
If you want a spot land based, go up to Lake Cathie and walk the shores there. I usually do well on flatties and whiting!
Haven’t fished North Haven but looks really good. Seen plenty of people pumping nippers as I’ve drove past! 🤔

    cheers scratchie!!!

I dont see any problem at all if fishing spots are not added for public, probably the opposite LOL. There are plenty GPS marks around - just do a bit of homework.

What I would appreciate is App ability to add(manually or upload file) own GPS marks in several formats - rather than currently dropping a pin. Also , a basic depth and/or some bottom structure map would be a nice feature.

    Thanks Savit.

This was actually first question I asked about the mapping, depths and contour lines. Lol

As the app develops, that is where I will try and have the most input as a rec fisho. The benefits will be enormous.

So I opened the App Store, downloaded the app and it said it was sending me an email to validate, after around 30 minutes got the email.

Went to the app that is supposed to show fishing spots and it has a total of 4 off Sydney. 12 Mile, Browns Mountain and a couple at Long Reef. No FAD's, wave riders, reefs or anything.

Sorry Scratchie but that app looks to be 99% useless or am I missing something?

    Hey Gordo,

    Thanks for your feedback.

The app is is there for boating and safety information as well as some of the features I outlined above.
It is not navionics. But it is constantly developing all the time.
Once you have the app, you are able to place your own fishing spots and share with other users if you wish.
I would like all fishraiders to get on board early and show their support as Deckee is also the owner of this site.
Any suggestions are welcome and will be forwarded to the development team.

    cheers scratchie!!!

  9. Thanks so much @mrsswordfisherman for posting this and your continued for me and the fishraider community.

I’m very proud to be representing fishraider within the Deckee brand.
The Deckee app is an exciting innovation and has some great tools and information to help you safely navigate whilst boating.

The app itself is developing all the time with some fantastic existing features like:

    Detailed weather information

Mapping with locations to marinas, fuel, bouys etc. You can also use the distance marker whilst on the water for your next location.

It has reminder settings which is a unique feature. Enabling you to set expiry dates and reminders for all your safety  and boating equipment

Quick links for Transport NSW, Tasmania and WA.

Coming soon, it will also have “log your trip”.  That will record speed, distance, trip time, heading and you’ll be able to save it to your profile.

    PLUS........... Coming really soon..............

I will have a STORY MARKER that I can place on the app, where you can follow me and my journeys to see where I am and what I’m up too whilst on the water!

So if haven’t downloaded the app, do it now and get onboard with Deckee.

You can also follow them on Instagram @deckeeapp and me on @team_scratchie

    Tight lines all,

    cheers scratchie!!!

  11. The inter club marlin tournament is this weekend.
The trailer boat tournament is on hold due to covid. I’ll message Tony Poole and try to find out what’s happening.
The Comp I’m going to this weekend is State cup (unfortunately not fishing)  chasing 3 talented kids around acres of paddocks for 3 days!

    cheers scratchie!!!

    Hey Jeff,

And I was gonna say "oh of course the motor had issues and you had to return to port because your son was getting all the action", but you have a photo to prove it. I guess you have the knowledge to diagnose the problem at sea, implement a solution and got yourself back to port without any incident. That's huge I reckon, and there was more effort involved in that than catching the fish.

Well done on the fishing results as well. Big smiles on itchy's face after those nice snaps. Oh, maybe it will be the "itchy and scratchie" show? Except you two won't beat eachother up.

And as was stated earlier, your son might get a hold of whiskers first. You never know. I guess it will be 'watch this space'.

    Thanks mate.
I hope the young fella doesn’t get whiskers before me or he’s not coming again! Lol

As I’ve said, I’m no mechanic but I can problem solve and fortunately it served me well.
Took my boat to my mechanic and the throttle arm had popped out of two plastic clips. $4 later and she’s good to go! Not something that you can plan for but glad the fix was inexpensive!

  13. Great report Rev. The weather has been pretty ordinary to say the least and I don’t think it’ll get much better this week. At least you’ve made the most of your time so far. A few flounder and a nice pannie will make for a good feed! Hope you get out again!

    cheers scratchie!!!

  14. Nice whiting! I know you can get worms at Kingsley beach but with this southerly it might be a bit difficult. The tackle store normally sells them. Tell em scratchie sent ya!

    cheers scratchie!!!
