  1. Hey guys, I've seen plenty of kings caught right up against the shore of coffin bay and surrounds. I was planning on doing a expedition down there in the next year. I was wondering if anyone could give me some guidance on landbased spots and what time of year is most productive. I've met a few locals who have told me there are possible landbased spots near the powerstation. But that was many years ago. Cheers any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  2. things blow up when you're fishing 13kg+ of drag, theres no other reels other than acurates, van stalls, stellas, and saltigas that will consistently handle these ammounts of drag. Personally the stella is a better reel than the saltiga, theres plenty more bail arm failures on the saltiga, and sticky drag. Drag much more smooth on the stella. If you want versatility, have a look at the old stella fa 10000 and get a 16000 and 20000 spool for them. if not, i advise you go for the stella 18k if you are fishing pe 8 or more, otherwise capacity will be an issue if you're using the 10k ps- i have a shimano kaibutsu gt rod in the for sale section rated pe 6-8 if you're interested.
  3. hey guys, you know those massive 50cm mullet that school up, you can occasionally get them to take bread but is it possible to get them to take flies like bread flies or insects cocnsistently? what exactly do those things feed on? might be some good fun on a light fly setup sightfished cheers

    Whats This Fish?

yeah mados are pests when trying to get live baits off the rocks, if you cant get anything else, punch one out, it's not gonna be as good as a yakka or slimey when targeting pelagics but having a bait out is better than having none, punch whatever you can get out, im sure you've herd stories of massive tuna caught on small treves and massive jews caught on blackfish
  5. i love this guy! itm has got the be my favorite fishing show, cant beat the crazy kiwi guy for a host. fake or real either way its great entertainment gotta love it when he hooks up "ohhh good fush, i funk itsa sneppa!!"
  6. floats are good for off the rocks and early in the morning first light, but you'll notice the kingies are surface shy as the sun comes up, you're probably better off with the livie on the bottom or freeswimming, again it all depends on where your fishing. when working lures, always rip them as fast as you can, and keep the lure in the strike zone as much as possible, if you dont get hits mix up the retrieve.
  7. nice work! so all this hype is definatley valid, seems like you guys are catching heaps of fish with them blades especially the picky ones like bream! i went to the shop to check some out but they were more expensive than tournament hardbodies and r2s poppers etc! like 20 bucks?!?! Are there any that are cheap options? I snag enough crankbaits im sure the snag rate for these blades are even much higher is this true? For those experienced with blades do they snag up really frequently?
  8. from what i understand, only 2 species can be kept legally, the eastern snakeneck and the maquarie river or short neck turtle, if u are planning to keep a couple, go the snake necks because the short necks can be pretty aggresive towards others, unfortunatly, both these species grow up to 25cm (shell size) so a 3 foot tank might be good for hatchlings but you'll need a bigger spot for them eventually. make sure u have land for them to bake in, and a infra red lamp for heat as well as a uv for their skin/shell, this is really important because without the uv they get skin and shell problems. after you have acquired a reptil license, simply contact any breeder and fax them your license and they will send you out hatchlings to be collected at the airport. hopes this helps.
  9. besides being pelagic, they got fast metaboliosmns and fast growth rates, they're constantly on the move, anywhere with a bit of depth and a bit of structure and bait will be frequented by kings, i always tell people this and they think im being secretive, im very confident that i cant hook up to a king anywhere in the harbour with a bit of depth and structure when in season, when not in season,
  10. thats a very nice haul, especially for winter!! in regards to salmon bycatch, try to spin up some small salmon and put them out live, australian salmon or kahwai or whatever the kiwis call it are the gun bait for nz kingfush. they're great for lbg too because they swim straight out!
  11. thanks for all the replies, how would you compare the straddie to say a tierra or advantage of similar size?
  12. the older stradics particularly in the smaller sizes with high memory braid like fireline had a filthy reputation for poor line lay resulting win wind knots even when theres not so much wind...ive felt the pain too many times, have shimano gotten their act together? hows the line management line for the fi stradics? im tossing up between tierra and new fi stradic and it just annoyed me that my 80 dollar daiwa cy managed braid alot better than my old stradic which was double in price not to mention the cy had the decency to include an air bail ? I did however like the finish and smoothness and general quality feel of the the new stradic not to mention the sweet ring the spool sets off when the drag runs, im happy to overlook the tightarse from shimano of not including an air bail if they have improved in the line lay department. for those that have used the new stradic, how well does it lay your line?
  13. you'll get people supporting both models here but for me it was a no brainer - stradic felt smooth but alot weaker build compared to daiwa. - even the stellas dont have air bails? wtf is up with that? even a 30 dolla daiwa regal comes with airbail!! im sure they have their reasons but i would personally prefer one rather than not! - my old stradic 1500 had massive wind knot problems, basically because of the small size of the reel it was not laying braid on the reel very well at all when they was the smallest ammount of slack. the daiwa cy, which i have on the other hand, wound braid flawlessly. - the only thing the stradic had going for it was it does sound alot nicer when the drag screams. and also, the daiwas only come in really slow speeds im personally boycotting shimano, the only reels id ever get from them would be the 10000 and 20000 stellas. or maybe a stradic if i needed a bit of speed in my retrieve it's just personal,
  14. i know its kind of cruel, but when we were teenagers we used to catch big puffers and put ciggies in their mouths, they would actually inhale the ciggies!
  15. huy guys am looking for houseboat hire in sydney, there will about about 20 of us, most of the ones ive seen can accomodate 10 max, just wondering will we need to hire 2 boats or are there ones out there that can accomodate 20? can you give me links to the ones you have been to or recommend? Thanks heaps tight lines
  16. hi mate, if you want it properly done, bring it to the shop or get a line spooler, they're quite affordable these days and the tackle shop should charge you more than 10 bucks. i do it myself, and basically a good way of doing it it feeding the line through your guides, then get someone to hold the spool, put a pen or dowel through the spool, then, get two other spools of line and put them on either side of the spool you're putting on, this acts like a brake sys5tem, the spool of line ure putting on is the brake disk and the other two spools on either side is your brake pads, get the second guy to keep pushing the two spools inwards so it makes the spool tight to pull. then it's a matter of winding in the line and using your hands to spread and distribute the line evenly. cheers
  17. there are alot of idiots in the habour, we were landbased when unsavoury characters on jetskis started doing doughies about 3 metres from us and giggling and laughing, we then proceeded to extend our gaff and waving and daring them to come closer, then we all started doing chicken dances and laughing our asses off and chucking rocks at them, they left...i dont support violence but sometimes u need to step up to not be stood over by little rich boys in their crafts. i dont understand why people are stupid enough to be burden fishos, we have an assortment of knives, gaffs and to be honest ive run into alot of fishios that arent the friendliest of bunch when it comes to their fishign being comprimised...

    New Shimano's

are you fguys certain its the reel and not the line? i blame my knot problems on a combination of the old stradic 1000 and fireline, i will never be using fireline again, it is as stiff as copper wire!! the fact that if you dont retrieve without grabbing hold of the line for some tension means the line lays not on the spool trench itself but on the outside of the spool(the outer edge) and when you recast, thats when the knots come. ever since owning the stradic 1000 i will never go back to shimano again, not for a stella or anything! they feel cheaply built, hell yeah they are smooth but the stradic is considered one of the higher end reels and yet it doesnt even come with a air bail and feels like its a falling apart....even a daiwa regal which costs 50 bucks on ebay has air bail and feels alot more solid. id rather sacrifice a bit of smoothness for a nmore heavy duty workhorse that isnt gonna shit itself when running large ammounts of drag pressure. thoughts?
  19. hey guys thanks for all the replies, basically my only concern is the rod's ability to cast a rang of lighter and heavier lures, whats your opinion on what would do the job best? has anyone tried the phluger contender 7'6 8-12kg? i will also look into the snapper raider, the king mack might be a bit too much for my budget. cheers
  20. catfish spines have a sting on them, so it could of gotten stung by it, its not unusual ive had a friend been attacket by a school while spearing and he was hospitalised.
  21. it really depends how the kings are behaving at the time, sometimes, they wont smash a thing, other times they will smash everything even bread, yes ive hook one up on bread when mucking around for bream. ive found that persistence is key, if onething isnt working then try something else, the list of things to try are - livies (fish and squid) - larger artificials (6inch + slugos or other stickbaits) - smaller artificials 3 inch power minnows - unweighted squid strips - unweighted pillies - peel prawns its always good to wind in ure livie or whatever slowly, the kings are curious and many times you will see them follow in a bait ure winding in, its good to have a plastic riged up ready to go when this happens. kings even follow in a bush of kelp. im gonna make teasers for raising kings because of this. but not sure what to use yet.
  22. sorry to go a bit off topic but how do bass spawn in places where there is no connection to the salt water? do they not spawn at all is that why dams need to be constantly stocked?
  23. i would be asking questions like where willy ou be fishing? dont get me wrong its great fun to land pelagics on bream and bass gear but if you are targeting kings landbased and the chances are you will be fishing in places with lots of objects that the kings can do you on, you will need a outfit with balls to turn fish and keep them away from structure. lucky for me ive had a cracker land based season and ive already broken rods been busted off millions of times and in some sessions landed 10+ 75cm+ models of kingies. im running a wilson 3-6kg rod with daiwa cy spooled with 25lb its a bit unbalanced in terms of rod to line but i find the wilson has a bit of balls when compared to other 3-6kg rods, this setup doesnt have much balls and really you're relying on that particular fish to fight clean and tire out by doing a few runs and then turning him and winding him in, you dont have much say in the fight at all. if out on the boat you could hook up to kings on bream gear all day everyday and you can make the fight last hours, but even a nice sized sambo will take you on for 5-10 minutes on 6lb ive learnt. my next setup im looking at a daiwa tierra 4000 with a 7ft 10-15kg of some sort, the reel has decent rated max drag and at least it will have some balls and puts more power in your hands.
  24. hey guys im looking for a sp rod over 7ft in length 10-15kg line class for heavier plastic work, so far only these have come to mind but wondering if i could get your opinion on these and if you have any more oprtions to throw in there - rapala braid concept 8-15kg or 10-20kg - penn sports 7ft 10-15 - phfluger contender - strudwick sick stick bluewater 10-15kg - ugly stick bluewater 7'6" 8-15kg i want a rod with a bit of balls mainly for kings will be fishing 30-40lb braid. cheers
  25. hey guys. i want to buy this rod, its actually a spinning rod, which will be its main purpose but will a overhead be able to be used on it? are overhead and spinning rods designed the same? thanks
