  1. slinky: i've been reading up specs on both brands. but i thought it'll be easier just asking for ratio rather than the line retrieval rate. but on that note, shimano can wind back at least 10cm quicker than daiwa on the smaller reels. doesn't sound much but i wonder if the fish can notice that speed difference. caranx: yea i wish daiwa would include higher ratios in the small reel range. i don't think i'll put a saltist on the magnum butt, it'll be off-balance
  2. in that case, that should exclude slinky too haha
  3. I've got a nitro magnum butt sitting here doing nothing and without a reel. I think this rod will be perfect casting light to medium weight metals as it handles upto 40g lures. How important is the ratio on a reel when chasing these species? I'm only asking because from the fishing mags that i have show fishos holding a Shimano with a 6:1 ratio and hardly any Daiwas. It could be all just coincidence with the mags i have. Do fishraiders have a lot of success on these fish with metals using Daiwa? I prefer them as they feel smoother and more solid. Thats just my opinion. Your answers will basically determine what to buy next
  4. i'm the opposite...not enough!
  5. Tortue all the way...they come in 1000m spool, so split it in two. no point using it all and let saltwater eat at it over time. actually i only put 250m on my alveys

    Ugly Fish

    second pic looks alien
  7. you can attach cleats to it...i'm yet to see anyone show me how. i'm the visual type person, i can't figure out stuff when its in words. there is another thread about this too that gives a how to
  8. thats scary! and considering we're either holding a pair of scissors, knife, hooks and other sharp objects at any one time. the chances of being cut is high.
  9. the top one does look like northead and bluefish. getting to that spot is dodgy, the only way i know is climbing up a shonky looking rope
  10. if your problem is having a hard time keeping the pilly on the hook during a cast, tie a half hitch around the tail or head. i usually avoid salted pillies as i feel its less attractive to fish
  11. These pictures are from Daiwa's website. Are these locations in Sydney?
  12. should invite him to fishraider. he likes a bit of fishing. even his boat is painted green
  13. two fish that most sydney siders dream of catching and your gf does it in one day! thats brilliant!
  14. i've seen people use some old mono and tangle it up into a big ball. put some bait in the middle. i think he did it unweighted because there wasn't much current running. when he brought it up, most times, the crab has tangled with the line so he didn't need a net either.
  15. if you're anywhere in the sydney metro area, i'd make a bee line for BOVA's chemist its the best! it beats any off the shelf meds i'm really bad with sea sickness, even a floating jetty in canal can get me sick. since using these, i've been in 2m swells and feel like a veteran seaman.
  16. I saw Survivorman catch this fish and he made it look so tasty! I guess anything is tasty when you're starving and surviving in the wild
  17. a tip: don't just use any soy sauce, look for seafood soy sauce. its a sweetened version. or you could just add sugar into your normal soy but i don't think its the same. the saefood soy sauce is what they use in restaurants.
  18. any red head popper is good starter as far as colour choice is concerned. even if they don't bite, it'll still get them inquisitive. at least that will give you an indication that they're there also i've noticed the smaller ones will mostly beat the larger varieties to the popper. so how large are you expecting
  19. was that caught in sydney? i'm still waiting to catch an amberjack in sydney. I've caught a Kingfish and Samsonfish. Waiting on the amberjack to get the seriola hat trick
  20. didn't know drummer take plastics. is it often? or did that just happen by chance?
  21. car polish? are you sure? wouldn't the cutting agent damage the guides over time? wouldn't wax be a better option?
  22. they say raucous noise come from the wharves, even if they ban fishing, they're still going to get raucous noise. do they realise how many drunks go onto the wharves to cool off? they're just looking for a target
  23. actually i've seen them in a livewell from a kingfish dvd. they had squid and yakkas as well so don't know why they kept them as backup? one way to avoid them is berley one way and cast your bait elsewhere. its worked to an extent. Or put on a huge slab of bait. This will give big fish tim to bully their way through a frezny to take the bait
  24. put some mono backing, you'll need it anyways
  25. 655 yds of 50lb for the 18000 according to shimano http://fish.shimano.com/publish/content/gl...g/Saragosa.html
