  1. I dont know about past models, but on the OC's the second drag can be varied just like the main drag. There is a dial that lets you vary it between virtually no drag (no recommended as the world gets tangled) and quite a reasonable pressure ( which I use on the beach, as its enough drag to set a hook, but not so much that the whole rod ends up in the water). Buy it, its worth it, even just as a good spin reel. I love mine

  2. It's been locked for months now (well it's been locked every time in there) I was told by locals that there was construction being done, and that previous to that there was an assault on a fisheries officer.

I don't know if these tales have any truth to them though

  3. Yer, i know there's like a formula and stuff, but my veiw is if the fish is running, strike. Dont strike if your baits just being picked on.

But don't be a fool and be one if those people that strike like their trying to split the fish into two halfs. Gental works just as well and isn't as hard on your terminal tackle

  4. Id oly suggest using the bait runner under supervision only! And let the livie take the balloon/float where ever it wants. If the bait is swiming freely in the water collumn, any decent fish should swallow the bait with out feeling the float, but you've still got to be quick and keep tension on.

They stay on the hook in free spool mode if they keep swimming, but if they stop or turn their head they're likely to spit it

  5. Sounds good mate, do you know if you are able to use a baitrunner reel when using a balloon float?

I use my bait runner with the ballon rig. Also i sould add that i use a large swivel with a bead either side. I tie my balloon to the swivel using 10lb line. This way the balloon can run up the line to the float stop loke a normal float. However you may need to use 3 or so float stoppers in a row, other wise big live bait will move the float stopper if they cant sink the balloon. I really only use this for big baits though (yet to catch something with such a bait), yakkas i dont really think need it....

  6. Hey champ, i haven't been fishing in about a month due to uni exams, but beforehand i was really getting into what youve described above.

I had tried alot in the past with no sucess, but i found that keeping it simply worked the best. Use 8m or so of leader (i use braid, so 10m of 20lb mono just gives my line i little stretch) and place a float stopper on this mono. Then just add to the end a bead, float, bead and 7/0 J hook (or circle hook)

This rig worked fine against everything up to just legal kings. If i was fishing bigger baits i added about 1.5m of 60lb leader to the end of the 20lb, and used a ballon float. Casting was almost imposible due to the weight, so i found the wind and let the wind take it out (might not ba an option on harbor wharf)

Hopefully other raiders can add to this/tell you what i did wrong. And hopefully the kings are still around? I would've thought they'd be gone by now. I was surprised to catch them a month ago.... any ones thoughts on that?

    Cheers

  7. Hi guys, has anyone had any experience float fishing with live bait? I am planning to use live yakkas and want to have a trace of about 3-5 meters from the float. I am going to fish for kingfish off wharfs and rocks inside the harbour.

The thing is, how am I going to cast a float which is 3-5 meters from the hook? Also, what type of float am I best of using?

    Cheers, James

  8. So, ive been keeping at it. Put a salmon out, didn't get a touch. Caught a missive squid (28cm hood) though f#@$ it and threw it out under balloon with two hooks in the hood. After struggling to throw it out by hand, it immediate got smashed by a nice King (~1m+). Problem was the king tore off the head and kept going. So now I know 3 hooks next time with one losely pinned in a tentacle. The hood then got harrased by smaller kings which weren't swallowing it. I retrieved it and put it into strips, got a nice just legal king

Next trip we kept the salmon for the table so I threw of a 35cm pike, it can back with a massive chunk out of the back of its neck. It sounds like squid, but I can't confirm, the tailor were around as well. We also caught a long tom. Do they go as bait or not really?

Cheers for the info guys, im learning :)

  9. I've done a 7 day cruise to the first two of those locations. If I'm honest the fishing would be great, though i don't know if it's frowned upon and if there would be time.

Noumea isn't where id fish as its just in port, but isle of Pines looked great for a fish. The reason I wouldn't fish though is because on the islands the local community are quite welcoming and involved (isle of Pines were at least) and it just seems inappropriate to me... Just my view though. Not saying you shouldn't. You could definitely get away with fishing in the port at noumea if it's allowed, but it's not the idealistic reef i imagine your dreaming of.

  10. Is a wobbe doing to be able to grab you? I haven't seen one in ages, but handled them with out a care thinking they can't bite (not in a bad way). I watch other sharks with real teeth though.... There are some bad stories it there :(

  11. I personally beleive any Beach down south will produce if you find the structure. BUT, as I'm sure you will be told by many others, the southern most beaches don't hold Jews. Ive fished windang allllot and never seen a hint of jewfish. So yes corrimal is a good start

  12. Sorry I just wanted to clarify that the cirlce vs j hook question was related to using the livies, not catching them.

But thanks for the info. I know that the yakkas off the wall are thin at the moment, hence I have been fishing by the trawlers.

And though id spin for live salmon baits, but I'd still like not too kill as many with the j hooks and let a few go

  13. I didn't now whether to make this a report or chat. It's more of a rant-report-chat hybrid than anything. Ive been getting into livebaiting the last few weeks and have had some solid success. Even got my first King in years! As well as some good salmon and tailor. I just need to become more effective at catching the bait. I also tried rigging a live salmon that just swam around for a few hours

So, first of all any ideas on where to gather livies in the illawarra. I hit up the wollongong harbor, but it's impossible get a good bag in the dark. Id love to hear from any kind locals with their thoughts?

Secondly im using j hooks as per suggestion from fellow Raiders, after i reported my circle hooks were foul hooking the livie and hence not working. But the j's are killing the buggers which means no catch and release and no using any catches as big livies. So I'm going to try cirles again but keep to the rig in using (I've gone very simple with my rig and is working sooo much better, I'm finally catching on livies) any pointers on hooking livies so the resulting catch can be released?

The last part is my rant, and is about how f#@%ing disgraceful the people who use that break wall are. I was there on saturday and filed my 20L bucket to the brim with plastic bags, loose line and bottles (all the stuff that will cause the most harm if it gets in the water). I got there on Monday and it was even worse. There is no responsibility in some people. Filled the bucket again, only made 200m of the kilometer before i was stomping the rubbish into the bucket to fit more. Very sad

Cheers guys. Ps sorry I missed the social, but the king fish called!!!

  14. Cheers guys. I don't plan on breaking anything, but I except that I may never see the hook again!

Krispy, it wasn't any of those. Wrong colors for a king or jew and it didn't take a chunk from the fish when it bit. So I don't think it was a shark either. But it was solid! I agree its weird to think it was a salmon...

  15. Hi all, sorry, I ask to many questions....

Whilst live baiting yesterday, I hooked a 40cm salmon that got harrased at the breakwall by another fish and ended up with a few scratches. I'm pretty sure that it was just another salmon, though much bigger. It wasn't silver or green which is were everyone's mind will go I'm sure! Haha

Anyway, this isn't the first time this has happened, and I'm keen to balloon float such a bait out. However, I just wished to know how to pin the bait. I use a 6/0 for live yakka, what size hook for a foot long livie? And where and how to pin them/bridle rig them?

    Cheers guys

  16. I use bom and willyweather for my forecasts, but it seems as though their wind predictions are becoming worse and worse! I fished wollongong yesterday evening with supposed "easing westerly winds" of 10 knots.

Hah yer, they need to look up what "easing" and "10" mean. I fished in a cyclone! Persisted non the less for some nice salmon on live baits and some nice pb squid. I know the forecasts can't always be bang on, but this is starting to get annoying. Does anyone have a preferred weather site?

    Cheers

  17. Hah i have the opposite! Wind/air knots occur because of slack line on the spool, and that occurs with poor line managment. Watch your slack and you should have less of an issue

  18. I've seen and fed them at p.kembla. Haven't landed one. Id avoid the r.national park, those rocks arent very fun tbh, there are safer and easier spots to be.
