  1. That's were i first took my yak last year, but haven't looked back since finding better water. I couldn't find livies during my trips but there should be some about. Burley would be key id assume.

Turn up stream from the marina at bobbin head, it shallows out so less/no salmon etc, but it's nice water for other species.

I have trouble fishing downstream of bobbin unless the fish bust up, it's relatively featureless. It will take a few trips to even start to learn that system

  2. If you buy block pillies from a tackle store that turns them out regularly (avoid the servos) then you know they're not old stock. And generally avoid the weird small brands. Then they aren't too bad, don't let them stew in the sun either. But i know what you mean, shit ones are like putting putty on a hook...

Salting them is a good solution, but the bought ones are relatively small. Do it yourself for better baits.

Fresh bait can kill it, but for salmon and tailor of the beach it's hard to beat the ease of good ol' pillies

  3. Beaches are always worth a shot. Port kembla breakwall is good fun but can be very hit and miss landbased. I would suggest grabbing some yakka from wollongong harbor and hauling them out there. It's a mission, but a livie under a float is top bait out there. Purchase a little trolley from a cheap store to help get the bucket out there. Just be smart on the wall...

  4. Don't do it as much as i used to, but generally id say 1.5m swell, and 10kn winds are a comfortable maximum, buuutt you can push it as far as you dare. There's a point of stupidity though....

But as always depends on what youre fishing in terms of weight and your location. Swell is good to have imo, but too much leads to current and makes it difficult. You can always hide from swell if you find the right location. The less wind the more comfortable.

DON'T fish after a easterly blow and/or big seas, these conditions generally wash weed onto the beach and cause alot of pain. Really in the end is trial and error, and limited by your tolerance.

  5. I had my kayak out last week by what i assume is mols point (can't spell it, but the spot with the seals). Poor mans downrigging squid strips, 3 hookups. Got dusted by each one. The few i saw were around a meter, another bloke landed one at 97cm. Doesnt have to be particularly fancy...

  6. Hi all,

Bit of a report here, and a few questions and fish id's. I just did a road trip to north stradie and was lucky enough to be allowed to throw a line in.

With horrific westerly's keeping the swell at zero, i hit the rocks at point lookout. Walked past the crowds on the easy to reach shelf and hopped down to a nice spot with some deeper water. First arvo i took the girlfriend so it was quite casual. I got a nice bream and she was interested, so out goes a pillie and i give her the rod. As im telling her to watch the braid for bites i notice the bait swimming away. So i help her raise the 13ft rid and she's on. Safe to say it wasn't another bream. It started peeling line and going in all directions. Helping her pump and wind we were getting nowhere. 5 minutes in she was buggered so i took over. I tightened the drag and.... well i only pissed it off. Instead of erratically swimming about, it looked north and kept going. Following it as far as i could i screamed at others to reel in. As it go closer and closer to getting around the point i finally turned its head. Yes i proclaimed as i got 20m back. No i proclaimed as it turned once more. Seconds pasted as i swore at the fish to stop. 200m of line down and it popped me on the point.... bugger

Next morning i was keen, but no monsters. Did get into 6 bream all over 35cm, one getting close to that magic four-zero. Over the next day there were more bream and a few trevs. Below are some pics of the unkowns. Any help is appreciated.

  7. Hi all,

Looking for a champion of the Clarence River System to chat with. Im heading that way with the family for a week and would love to get up to date. Shoot me a pm if you'd like, or post here if you wish. Not after secrets of the deep, just wondering how the system is fishing. My only direct question is where can i find livies!

    Cheers guys

  8. From my very low and relatively cold vantage point, i can only agree. Great event, great people. It was good to join the 'conversation' in other words yelling at other boats in the dark.

Big shout out to those how offered us silly kayakers refuge if we froze, and to the swordies for letting us join them in the warmth of the mothership before paddling home.

Great night, would do again :)
