  1. Ive converted a battery operated air pump to run off a 12 volt battery. thing is it only draws about 0.3 amps. So if you leave it over night. say 10 hrs, it has only consumed 3 amp hours, which is chicken feed. even 20 hrs is 6 amp hours still nothing to worry about. I ve kept poddies alive for over a week, i use a 240v air pump, corner filter with cotton and ammonia removal stones. Trick is to filter the droppings out of the water regularly , and not over feed them, you must keep the water cool if it is in summer, i do this by thowing in a frozen water bottle, a temp of 18 degrees keeps them less mobile, less chance of the oxygen been consumed and less chance of the water fouling. this is also important when transporting them home, if you have a large number of them in a bucket, an aerator could be useless if the water is warm, dont be afraid to add some fresh water if needed. but add it gently as to not shock them with sudden temp change. cheers paul.
  2. there is no oil up there, if it s a premixed one..
  3. hi yowie, have there been any reports of squid been caught around lilli pilli since last weeks rain ? MR RB.
  4. well done yowie, you keep getting feeds in a difficult water way. Mr RB.
  5. Hi Gents, thanks for the replies, I am currently using the yamaha yamalube 2 stroke oil, black container with the blue screw lid. I'm not sure if this is a "cheapish" type of oil.... on the container it says to mix it at 100:1 on late model yamahas, I know the engine requires 50:1, but to prevent the engine from blowing smoke I mix it at 75:1, and i never run the engine above half throttle, so i am guessing i should be safe, please correct me if I'm wrong ... ? I must add that when i do stop to fish for an hour or so, and attempt to start a slightly warm engine, i always have to use the warm up lever... and she starts first go, (no warm up lever no start ) is this normal on this model, as i have owned previous outboards and they have never needed the warm up level on a warm or hot engine. I confrim that the correct plugs are used (NGK B8HS), but in terms of running cold, is it being suggested that the thermostat on the engine is possibly stuck open hence running cold ? thanks My RB.
  6. Hi , just wondering if anyone can shed some light to prevent an old outboard from fouling the plugs after prolonged trolling... In normal use the engine is tuned quite well, but after prolonged trolling, the engine does seem to get very rough after about 15mins of trolling. The outboard is a 1982, SUZUKI DT 50, premixed 2stroke in very good condition. Will running a slightly leaner petrol to oil mix fix it ? currently running it at 75:1 Or leaning the air fuel mixture idle screw ? or altering the timing, ? I have a feeling the timing at idle is slightly on the advanced side. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks MR RB.
  7. Anyone been out yesterday or today, what are the temps like at the surface.... cheers...
  8. no defintely a hoax... i bought some in the hope that i could weld some pieces of al together, but had no chance with pieces that were 1mm thick... seems to only work on cans, waste of money...
  9. Eh, Target the river mouths in autumn, or near structure, moored boats .... Last few hours of the run out tide, coinciding with early morning or evening. Burley, is essential, constant uninterupted stream. use the smallest line and sinker possible, cheers.
  10. fantastic session, you sure have them worked out ! cheers MR RB.
  11. Awesome mate, top result, fishermen in general can spend years trying to catch a jew .. well done. MR RB.

    Water Temps

Eh guys, Anyone know the current water temps in the hacking / botany bay estuaries ? Cheers MR RB.
  13. Know how to start your engine (outboards) if your battery or starter goes dead. I have cut a 150mm off my broom handle, drilled a hole and put a bit of rope (4 foot) through it and tie a knot in the rope at both ends. Most engines should start by wrapping the rope around the top of the flywheel, and pulling it. I can start my 50Hp, with ease and without a battery connected. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the ON position (regardless of a battery or no battery the switch needs to be ON), and the fuel is primed. You dont have rip the flywheel off the engine when pulling, but more of a little jerk when you feel the engines compression building up. The knotch on the flywheel will tell you which way to wrap the rope. not sure if this will work on larger outboards, but worth a try. Mr Rosebay
  14. Due to the advise on this post, and a length conversation with Jewgaffer during the week, I too managed to get my first Jew over the weekend, fishing in an eddy just off a river point, in port hacking. At 75 cm and 5 kilo, the silver creature hit the deck after a strong first run and 1 hour after the top of the tide, the atmosphere was priceless. Lots of yakka, tailor and squid in the water. Baits used, live yakka, filletted/butterflied yakka, butterflied slimey, tailor halves, all caught and kept live in a bait tank using pilchards. He took the butterflied slimey that was in the water for about an hour and a half on a running sinker 2 hook (8/0's mustad beaks) rig and the yakkas dead and live, tailor heads & tails in the water at the same time, did not get a touch. Lessons learnt, 1. Bait or bait fish must be present at the spot. 2. turn of the tide is prefered. 3. variety of large fresh dead and live baits is essential, as it appears they have a preference. 4. burley, burley burley. Mr Rosebay.
  15. All Fishraider Organisers & Mentors, I would like to offer a thank you for the time and effort put in to run this site. I believe there are many hours spent behind the scenes, and people don't realise the time involved. The site offers, great information and experience. The amount of things I have learnt on this site is endless..... and I am sure there are many other in the same boat ! Great Site ! PS Jewgaffer thanks for the lengthy chat we had earlier, regarding Jewfish and other topics in general.... there are lot of things that can not be simply read from a book ..... experience...... Cheers Mr Rosebay.
  16. Hi, try shallows on the run up tide, where there is weed and sand... or you can try around structure, rocks, moored boats where there is a little bit of current, or when the tide slows ie just before low or hi tides use a 6lb line and leader about 1 m long, and the smallest sinker possible to get the bait down, or even no sinker at all on a running sinker rig. Leave the rod in the holder as they will hook themselves, and if you see little bites, don’t touch the rod, it could be a big one. Burley is a must, use old bread or crumbs, chicken pellets, corn, aniseed and garlic, mixed with chopped pilchards, and a burley pot... and keep a fine trail constantly flowing out. The trick is to use a bait that you are burleying with. Pilchards would have to be the most versatile and easiest bait to get.... You can use chicken with parmesan cheese. or large prawns. I have found that sometimes you need to use whole pillies to get the bigger fish, with a one hook rig and half hitch on the tail, (cut the tail fin off to prevent the bait from spinning if there is current). This one took a whole pilchard, 3 weeks ago, fished in the way as described above.
  17. Thanks for the response, I had another go last night, just after sunset. The 25 knot southerly didnt do me any favours and I could see no squid. I'll try again soon ......... MR RB
  18. Last night about 8 - 9 pm, Turned up to the local wharf, in search of some squid. Water depth was about 1.0 metre. I was watching 4 squid under the wharf's light not taking any notice of my squid jigs ... ... I threw cheap jigs at them, in blue, pink and green in 2.0 and yozuris 1.8's in green and orange and they did not even follow. Varied retrieve to super slow, twitches and fast but it did not make any difference. Any tips ? MRRB.
  19. Nathan, that's fishing.... just wondering what was the clarity of the water like , with all the rain we had a week ago. MR RB.
  20. thanks , i'll go and get some naturals and let you all know how I go. cheers, MR RB>
  21. Hi, after going for squid at local wharf, was there for an hour for not a touch. This guy turns up and catches one first cast.. i said nooooo. In 15mins he has two small bait sized squid. I get talking.... he was using a yamashita..... i'm taking up the pros advice, I'm going to buy a yamashita.... But which one ? EGI Suite, Golden Bait Glow Natural golden bait any help would be appreciated. MR RB>
  22. 3 litre juice container, with a few sinkers on the bottom, so that it sits horizontally. 80 x 50 mm hole on the top side, with corners folded down prevents mullet from escaping the trap, no other holes are required. Trick is 1 foot of water, sandy areas I first throw some bread in the water and wait to see if the mullet are there. If no mullet appear to the bread bits thrown in, in 5 mins, I move. good luck, some days you can get 30 -40 some days they are not there. MR RB>
  23. If i was a flatty i would shaking. well done. MR RB.
  24. yeah mate well done, I'll hound them too... "If the baby don't cry it won't get any milk !" Mr rb.
