  7. Good report mate and welcome to the site, that little orange beasty is a Sargeant Baker (female), not really a sort after table fish, glad you enjoyed your time out there..
  8. Mate personally I reckon that you should feed them the scent of tasty stuff rather than big chunks of bits and pieces, get them interested then drop your bait down to them. I agree with you that you don't want to fill them with berley.. The berley I was using today was mainly bread mixed with some rabbit pellets, when added to salt water it went into watery slop and when introduced into the current was just enough to spark some interest.
  9. Hi Raiders, went out with my buddy Hutcho today to catch some bream. Armed with a few light outfits we headed around to the Half Tide Rocks area (opposite Ettalong). So we have an assortment of gear being small 2000 size reels and 1-3 and 2-4kg rods, 4, 6 and 8lb braid and leaders 6-10lb, smallest running sinkers to 1/0 and 2/0 suicide hooks. We found a good spot which had a sandy bottom dotted with some kelp covered reefy bits and oyster encrusted rocks, seemed to me a good spot for a bream. We berleyed up with bread mixed with salt water and a box of rabbit/guinea pig pellets, looked pretty good too, one big bucket full of a sloppy mess. Anyway I started a trail going and soon after the fish arrived, we scored some small bream at first around the 24-25cm size which were sent back with a message to get their bigger brothers. After 20 minutes and 6 little bream the word got out to the bigger ones and they came firing in. first up was 2 in the 29-30 cm range, then a flattie grabbed one of our baits and he went into the esky with the bream. Okay now we have a bit of a feed for Hutcho's neighbour, promise has been met. More baits go out and now we are down to only one rod each as things are getting hectic, Hutcho's line goes screaming off his reel and though it was a massive bream but as the pics show it is a nice Drummer of 46cm's. I scored a small Drummer as well, they were loving the small strips of squid. It went like this for the next hour or so, we were busted up in the reefy bits by either big bream or more drummer, we managed to get 2 more decent bream into the boat, they were 35/37cm's, the others we just couldn't get clear of the reef, the fish were lost but even the bust ups were fun.. Anyway that was our morning, good to out with Hutcho again, the old firm is back hahaha.. Enjoy the pics..

  16. Okay so another story on the charter was an epic battle with a giant shovel nose shark, took nearly an hour to land the beast and with the help of 6 of us we managed to get him on deck, remove the hook, grab a few shots and release him back. This was just another memorable moment from the trip. He was about 7-8 feet long, biggest shovel I have ever seen..
  17. Hi Raiders, back from yet another Darwin fishing adventure, this time on a 4 day/night charter with a great bunch of friends. The fishing was primo, everyone getting their share of all kinds of finned critters. We caught tuskies, a few black jew, all sorts of trevally, golden snapper(fingermark), tricky snapper(grass emporer), small red emporer, large mouth nannygai, estuary cod, coral trout the list goes on. The weather was great and we tried out some new spots not yet tried by our skipper, some of the spots went off the scale with one in particular holding trevally which really gave us a workout. The regular marks were also healthy with fish and the big goldies came out to play on one memorable afternoon, everyone was on to these hard pulling beauties. The charter its self was top notch with great food, my pick was the seafood night where we had beautiful oysters, big prawns and fish cocktails along side restaurant quality salad and dressings. The gear we used was all good and some of us took up a few lighter outfits and had some plastic sessions, heaps of fun but trying to stop some fish was almost impossible, however we did land some nice coral trout and goldies on plastics. I won't bore you all with anymore talk, I'll just let the pics do the talking. (click on the pic to see the larger version) All I can say is 'get up there' ......
  18. Hi Raiders, going up to Darwin again, this time on a 4 day/night charter out into the big blue. A whole bunch of us from the Avoca area, should be a great time. After this I will spend some time with the rellies and maybe get out on his big barra boat again. So no doubt there will be lots of photo's and these will be put up in a post when we get back. Looking forward to some 30 degree days...
  19. Yep that's it mate, you only need to cast where the gutter is, I like to go as light as I can as far as sinkers are concerned, fish will often be within the first 10 - 20 meters..
  20. G'day mate , here is a pic showing both a parallel and outward gutter, you can clearly see the colour change in the water, I will fish beside the gutter and lets my baits roll into the gutter and or deeper water. Hope this helps a little..
