  1. I have a one-eyed flyfishing mate who lost the sight in his right eye to a dry fly in windy conditions.
  2. Can't get to the water for a month so thought I'd look at getting some supplies in the meantime. I need a good range of lures, SPs, jigheads etc. Is there a preferred online store? They seem to be better value than the shops - agreed? Thanks.
  3. Might also be a Saddletail? http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/fisheries/species-identification/reef-fish/tropical-snappers-and-seaperches/saddletail-snapper-large-mouth-nannygai
  4. Thanks for the advice! "Trout Cod Record", wow. You must be among the few who have even seen one in the flesh.
  5. Maybe I didnt explain it very well. I only go out to my knees, then I'm dry and warm late at night. There were spots up the northern coast where the good channel was the outside one, over the top of the sandbar. I took some good fish out of it while others floundered in the close channel (pardon the pun)
  6. Thanks. I look forward to learning more about south coast beaches by actually fishing them!
  7. I like waders to walk in as far as poss, especially at night. Some people seem to cast from half way up the beach!
  8. Fair enough, thanks, and to Sgt. Still waiting to take possession of our new Kings Point place so looking forward to both lake and beach fishing. On the west coast vic, the roughest days seem to fish the best, but most days there are BIG currents and sometimes heaps of loose kelp. LOVE the look of the water off Ulladulla. Can't wait to put in some reports!
  9. Hi everyone, I'm new to south coast NSW having come up from west coast Victoria. Down there you get huge rips and powerful side currents which means we use a paternose rig with a 6 oz star on the bottom that can bury itself in the sand. Up here there doesn't seem to be such a problem, is that right? I've read on this forum of people using a ball sinker off the beach in channels??? Or live bait and no lead at all?? Any thoughts?
  10. You got some good fish there! Nice to see a bream taking a dry fly. Wet flies (a range of different patterns) work well in estuaries as well. I think it's neater and preferable to wind up the slack line after a hook up and reel the fish in, rather than strip it in which can leave you with an untidy mess on the shore.
  11. Cracker Night was a highlight of the year - for the whole family. Building the bonfire and standing around it until it was all gone. Next morning rushing back in daylight to find the crackers that hadn't gone off! The things we did with those wickless bungers!
  12. Thanks Tulz, I'm coming up from Victoria to live. Bought a house at Kings Point near Ulladulla. Gotta wait for settlement now, but REALLY looking forward to getting into some good Shoalhaven fishing! Heaps better on the NSW east coast than west coast Vic, if you ask me.
  13. Good fish. After dark yeah? Which stretch of sand?
  14. Looks a bit like what we used to call Butterfish in Victoria (or Morwong I think). Small mouth, rarely hooked, weed eaters. But obviously a different species. Butterfish are good eating.
  15. Well done!! What's the mouth of St Georges like? Is it pretty open? Deep channel to the sea?
  16. In the mouth of the Robinson River (Gulf of Carpentaria) camping one time with a ball of string and no tackle. Old Aboriginal bloke gave me a couple of rusty fish hooks. I found a 303 bullet shell, scratched it up on a rock to make it shine, wired on the hooks, tied on the string and chucked it out. A couple of retrieves and a MASSIVE barra followed it up to my feet. I gave it a couple of jigs and the barramundi placed his mouth right over the "lure". Bang, I had him on the bank!
  17. Love Port Stephens, caught some great fish there. Magic part of the world.
  18. Wow. I'm learning all the time! This website is the best thing I've found in ages. Your post reminds me of the time I spent all day surfishing on the west coast of Victoria trying to catch salmon with whitebait, squid etc, when I suddenly got a huge whack. Finally landed a beautiful gummy shark and found a small salmon going round and around further up the line. Realised I'd caught the small salmon in big surf without knowing and the shark took that. He'd never have touched my dead baits.
  19. Bit of info Scratchie: A 'slimey' is a mackerel right? It was LARGE? How large? You put it back on the hook as live bait? That must have been a hell of a BIG bait!
  20. Thanks for the post. Have just bought a property on the lake at Kings Point. woohoo!! Can't wait to get out on the water!
  21. Nicely done! Caught plenty, but I've never seen a salmon of that size.
  22. Thanks for the great report. What I'm loving about this site is the generosity of the members! (Where to fish and how to catch 'em) Greatly appreciated.
  23. In April I got a few pipis on the water line on the rising tide at Culburra beach, but not many.
  24. I note that this is an old post (I found it by accident) but if anyone is going to Culburra, head right up Prince Edward avenue towards the lighthouse passed the caravan park. Just short of the carpark, look for a hidden track in the trees that has steps down onto the ocean beach (not the inlet). Off the rocks you can get good tailor, blackfish etc.
