  1. Live bait hook 😆 but more close to a J hook rather than a circle hook. Key characteristic of a circle hook is that the tip points in towards the shank - critical for the hook to be able to slide until hits the edge of the fishes mouth.
  2. Legal size for kings are 65cm btw....
  3. Only if you are talking about the jerkshad style (split tail). You work them aggressively. For paddle tail, work them slowly.
  4. I rather jerkshad style minnow tails on my softplastics when targetting kings - though that's probably cause of the action I use - darting left and right, up and down (i.e. erratic) with pauses for drops. With a paddle tail they don't dart as much and of course more suited for a slow roll (where they excel with the beating tail). For the 3" to 4" minnow profile, I use 2/0 on a 1/4oz - maybe cause I have heaps of them, but seems to work with very few spat hooks.
  5. It's a great offer from DerekD, definitely fast tracked lure fishing for me.
  6. 4m rod - maybe for retrieving only but will be difficult to handle/cast. Nothing wrong with pier 8, just depends on timing of what's passing through when your lure is in the water. Keep an eye on surface activity.
  7. Hey Volitan, I got it wrong, it's lipo not lifepo4 (though you can buy lifepo4 aswell, it's not what I have). Here is the link to the exact battery I use: https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-battery-5000mah-3s-25c-lipo-pack-xt-90.html?___store=en_us Depending on your budget, Id prob go a 5ah lifepo4 for better ruggedness and chemical stability (lower risk of blowing up supposedly!)
  8. Truly a lifesaver, well done! Im heading out with some mates, looking to show them what fishing can produce - any tips? (Sounds like there were bustups to chase?)
  9. as some may have said above, consider the following setup - little bit of effort upfront, but then very easy to setup when you go out: 1. Small sounder - Striker series, for example 2. Install sounder in a "through-hull" configuration. Basically inside your kayak you make a little mould for your transducer, with space all around and above, and silicone it - make sure there are no bubbles : 3. Make a little box for a lifepo4 battery - very very light and will last all day. Make box from a spare tupperware container, modded to pass through cables and sealed with silicone 4. drill hole to allow signal cable through to the top where you would mount/dismount your sounder (i use a spare rod holder slot - modded a PVC tube to hold the sounder).
  10. when wash fishing, do you get as close as you can cast unweighted baits in to the white/foamy parts and feed the line?
  11. thanks motiondave - very good advice, definitely want to spread weight for max stability.
  12. Hi all, will be taking some mates out for a fishing trip in middle harbour this weekend, all up (with engine, people and luggage), we hit 590kg of the 595kg limit on my ABP plate (have conservatively estimated luggage). Has anyone taken their boat out close to/at max and any tips? How conservative are the weight limits printed in the ABP? Will be staying in calm waters, moderate speeds etc....
  13. Hi all, as a very very happy owner of a trolling motor with GPS anchor / spotlock , I'm really keen to hear from those who have one and how they use them so I can try new techniques out. What I'm currently doing: * Going into shallows (2-3m) over weedbeds near rocky shorelines, spot locking, and then fishing for squid. * Spot locking amongst moorings * Spot locking near rocky shorelines (e.g. outside of North head) and dropping baits (want to try getting closer and throwing unweighted baits into wash, but not yet fully confident) * Replacing anchor in the usual spots where I would anchor and throw out baits.
  14. Thanks all, I think the easiest and least corrosive method is to just run a cable that fits through a gap on the side to a terminating Anderson plug that I plug to the electrical system when in use (which is inside the hull).
  15. Oh sorry, I should've said: DC12V from the trolling motor to socket through-hull to battery. It would have to support 40-50amps.
  16. Hi all, I'm the proud owner of a trolling motor! Only one issue though... The motor is mounted on a fabricated platform on my 1550 Fisher - it sits outside of the hull and the cables run through-hull. We had a socket put in but it's not waterproof / sealed. Has anyone got an external plug and receptacle on the outside of their boat that they could recommend? Cheers, Anthony
  17. I prefer to wake up at 4:45, but have most things prepped the night before so that it's just breakfast and loading valuables then off I go. The return is pretty bad, often a queue on the water.
  18. I live near a sand flat, so low tide is the best for me - pump yabbies I now have access to, walk almost right up to the drop off and drop a bait whilst I pump for more yabbies. Retreat as the tide picks up, casting further and further to be able to hit the drop off until home time.

    Reel spray

My process, might be overkill, is after every trip out to: * Spray with hose from a distance, trying to go from the top for the most part - i.e. spray hits the drag knob. My reels have rubber drag seals. * Wipe dry with clean cloth - reel and rod, particularly eyelets * Very light "passing" spray with inox MX over the reels * Wipe with cloth , use same cloth next time.
  20. Very unfortunate - a kingie almost took my sustain fi this weekend, saved it but got busted off. Great report- seems to me like a better season than previous ones.
  21. The perils of scrolling rapidly through on my phone whilst on a boat! Need to slow down .... Thanks for pointing it out! Thanks @PaddyT for the reply!
  22. Thanks mate Haha thanks PaddyT. I tried a quick search with you as author and keyword yakka - couldn't find that particular post/response, do you mind linking me? Would put it to good use. Also, my original question is aboit yakkas at Roseville boat ramp - just curious to find out the specific spot - perhaps its just anywhere near the ramp (all I can think of are the mornings to be out of the way of other boaters). Thanks mattymattmatt - had a go yesterday and managed a few - found that the small ones died a lot quicker than the too-big-to-use yakkas in the bait tank (built in, pump used/cycled water every 20min). Might need to cycle the water more often or maybe try chucking an aerator in there....
  23. Thanks motiondave, still keen to get an idea of productive yakka spots though !
