  1. Ramp rage is the worse. I remember it taking almost two hours from first arriving at the ramp to driving away!
  2. Depending on the size of rapala magnum, it might be too big to work like a casting lure. In addition to what DerekD suggested above, I'd add in a 3" powerbait minnow - such a versatile lure. Also there are smashbait squids. Otherwise, slow pitch jigs of the appropriate weight for the depth youre in.
  3. Good point franks, braid can be quite tough to use depending on your experience! Going off the info provided it sounds like some level investment has taken place so just took a guess that there might be some familiarity there. Having said that, you can always get some cheapish braid from eBay to play around with - not too quality stuff but acceptable for a beginner and bread and butter fish.
  4. Rebel is right, you should tell the shop what fish you are chasing and how you fish (land based + baits) and they can suggest a combo. It's not just about brands - it's also about length and weight rating. If you are fishing those spots it sounds like you are lobbing baits a distance? If so, you'd be looking at something like a 9ft, maybe 8kg+ rating and at least a 5000 sized reel (leaning towards 6000 min). From those spots, the biggest catch would be a decent jewie and maybe the random shark or two. Otherwise you'd be looking at typical bread and butter species - in which case lighter would be preferable (e.g. 7ft 3-6kg and 3000 sized reel) for a middle ground otherwise a standard bream combo. For distance make sure you use braid instead of mono - infact you might get some instant improvement by simply going to braid on your existing rod and reel if you haven't already switched over.
  5. Good company is always a plus, even if it's a kingie donut! Did you see any bust-ups whilst working the harbour and if so, where abouts? I'm keen to chase some this weekend!
  6. Thanks! What I was thinking would be a chat module on the front page with a live stream of chat messages where people could share where they have encountered bust-ups for others in the vicinity. Now that im thinking about it more, would have to have some way to sticky a chat message for a couple of hours so that they don't get lost. Otherwise maybe it's an interactive table of some sort that people can add to with their experiences.
  7. Hi all, was thinking wouldn't it be great to have a live chat feature on FR where you can relay info about bust ups you have encountered as we enter the season? Would be temporary as not to clog up the reports section and you can head to those locations if you are in the area. Often I'd want to see if anyone has come across them and also share where I've found them to be. What do you guys reckon? (We could call it the Bust up Brigade , I had second thoughts about Bust Watch 🤣)
  8. Hi all, went out in the moderate winds in hope of finding bust-ups - found some in the open areas adjacent to fort Denison, couldn't hook up though. Bust-ups were small, so moved on. Checked lavender bay and Walsh bay, no bust-ups there either, not even under the bridge as they usually are. Lots of maritime and the odd police boat around issuing warnings/fines for those not "transiting" in the channel between fort Denison and goat island. Headed back to the heads - came across a few bust ups near North head (inside) , managed to land a decent tailor and salmon but then got inspected by a police boat whilst landing the salmon and precious bust up moments later, the police left and in their wake....no more bust ups 😭. What did arrive though was an increase in winds - too tough to stick around so headed back. Good thing about the poor weather - was quick and easy to launch and retrieve at the boat ramp 😆 Whilst packing up, another fisho commented on the poor results today especially given the monsters (kings) outside the opera house all week - does anyone know about that? Still great being on the water though! EDIT: lure that did the damage: PowerBait Minnow 3" in green watermelon on a 1/4oz jig head, both slow jigging in mid water and straight into the chaos
  9. Hi all, has any fished wedding cake island off Coogee? All I've read is that you need to be careful but unsure of what fish you can catch there (sounds exciting as a source of structure) and tactics if it's worth fishing.
  10. What time if day was it in Saturday? I came across a big school around 7am on Sunday but gone in 5min (in the same area)
  11. I, too, have tried them all. SPs I only use for the most part are: powerbait , zmans or slapstix (not sure what the plastic is).
  12. So much goes into producing the overall handle and feel of rod than just the amount of graphite in a rod (as Waza mentions above). Also, wait till you try to compare xT vs xHM vs others - really hard to compare purely on number alone. Would be helpful to go into your local tackle store and pick up a range of same length, same weight class 100% graphite rods and feel the difference. Try 30T rods and Daiwa rods with "HVF" as well. Also, when comparing casting distance, don't forget to check other factors - braid diameter? Amount of leader?(though more just about passing through eyelets or not) etc...
  13. This is a great idea, I would like to join the sessions. Would be interesting to hear a "reports" section and also master-class on topics (beginners to advanced) - would love to put a face / voice to famous FishRaiders!
  14. You're right depends on how many fish you plan to catch as well - my method doesn't do well when the fish are stacked, a problem I dont often have 😪
  15. Spike, bleed, into esky which has iceblocks. Easier to manage, clean and carry.
  16. hey guys, with the rough winds and swells we've been having, would middle harbour fishing be negatively impacted? What are your thoughts and experiences?
  17. Thanks. I remember years back I was on a charter, in the same area intact, other customers caught a few nannygai and were advised they could keep them, i didn't get a good look so was unsure of min size. I'll keep some next time! Not sure of a recipe for such a small fish though!
  18. Hello all went out yesterday, sprinkle of rain now and again, great conditions out past the heads otherwise (next to no wind and very calm swell - lived up to the forecast of 3.6knts (7.6kn avg) and 0.9m swell w/ 9sec period). Was rocketing out there 😈 Did a few drifts at a spot near coogee (thanks @GoingFishing) and managed a few snapper, couple of pigfish, a nice flattie - catch of the day was one of the snapper coming in at 50cm (pb so far). Also, we got a couple of nannygai but threw back cause we were unsure of the legal size in Sydney (didn't come up on DPI) - they seemed pretty small, maybe ~15-20cm. Any ideas? These look to be also called bright redfish if my googling skills are reliable!
  19. Great post, @LandBasedKeith, let me know if you ever do Sunday sessions!
  20. Not to be confused with "I once saw a 3 metre flatty" 🤣 Will keep an eye out. end up doing that sometimes! Have gotten some strange looks in the past!
  21. I was thinking wouldnt it ve great if we had a special fishraider sticker on the side of the boat and that way you can spot a member straight away, what do you reckon? Though, I can already spot @DerekD's hobie from a mile away! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks anthman. I will start a list here of those that want a sticker @anthman RED given to jeffb5.8 @Berleyguts given to jeffb5.8 - pick up from Scratchie Baz @GoingFishing @big Neil Red @jeffb5.8 BLUE given @motiondave RED given to jeffb5.8 @61 crusher blue @Scratchie a selection of red, blue and white given to jeffb5.8 (for you, Baz, tobycb) @Joeyd blue @kingie chaser blue and red @tobycb BLUE given to jeffb5.8 pick up from Scratchie @Busy-livin red @dirvin21blue @saadred @Azza_Fishing red @pegz blue @devon007 blue
  22. You might even get away with a two rod setup: rods suggested with a live bait out there and a lighter rod to work whilst you wait. A @DerekD favourite is the shimano raider 5-8kg snapper rod with a suitable reel (4k size).
  23. thanks penguin. I tried over the weekend, anchored about 30m from Balmoral jetty. Came across lots good size yakkas at the bottom, had two floats (0.5m to 1m depth) - no garfish, unfortunately. Had bread burley as well as chicken pellets soaked in tuna oil in a berley pot, steady stream of berley visible. I didn't thrown any bread on the surface as did not want to attract seagulls. Also made a dough mixture which was very effective on the yakkas, but as mentioned, could not find any gars.
