  1. Hi mate, consider the saragosa 8000 it is a mch light reel hen 14000 spheros. As for drag, you always here about how much drag a reel claims and alot of angler place lots on emphasis on the drag they use, but believe me 13Kg of drag is huge and you will never be in a situation to use that much drag.
  2. AS stated if your serious buy once buy right spend the money and get a decent combo, Saragosa 8000 matched to a JM250/200 or Daiwa Catalina range of rod will do the trick on 99.5% of Kings in NSW. I have not got that exact out fit but if I was in the market for a mid range combo that would be my pick. as I think it would be a good balance between power and lightness, that’s if spin is your option. Cheap gear will not last you long if your serious about it, and up grades will always be on the back of your mind!!!
  3. Hey mate, give Global tackle a call Wahyu will be able to get these for you. Price wise you looking just under 1k for the twin power and about $1100ish for Stella
  4. 13kg is actually pretty good, considering the Saltiga 4500 only comes stock with 10kg or so, i would say ater C-tec up grade it will sit somewhere the same as your 13kg. You will find 13 is ample for most fish, even when I go to Perth on my yearly Sambo jigging bash I only load the reels with 12kg max and fish your encountering 20kg plus Samson fish and 12kg has been more the ample.
  5. Hey Mate, my mate lives in Clarkson he doesn’t think the fishing is that crash hot up that way, but if you going to be in Perth through X-mas get on a Sambo Jigging Charter, that should have you arms stretched a bit long, during that period is the perfect timing as Samson fish school off reef for their annual spawning aggregation.
  6. Mate, it is a hard one to decide as many people will say high speed is the go and other will say low, I use low speed reels for all my jigging, I have also used a high speed reel before as well and to be honest with you I could not tell the difference. One thing to remember is when fighting a large fish your rods does most of the work and you never just straight out crank a fish in unless it is a baby. Also another thing to consider is your jigging style as some people have mentioned that they can’t get the jigging motion right with a high speed or a low speed, I can’t comment on that as I can’t feel the difference.
  7. Sorry mate, didn’t know the Saltist 6500 was a high speed, but as stated above low speed is definitely what you want for jigging. Jigging is harsh on gear and addictive, it is advisable to really research what you are after so you won’t be upgrading any time soon. What sort of budget have you got for a set? Cheers
  8. Hey Steze, definitely bring your own gear mate, I went there early this year and it was blast I hired a dinhgy and it was great fun didn’t get anything substantial but plenty of reef fish caught. One thing I do recommend is to hit the Ferry wharf next to the airport after dark, we go absolutely smoked and there was some great fish / Noahs caught. We saw 200lb groupers and 20kg GTs cruising around that area.
  9. What type of fish and likly fish are targeting, the reason i ask is if you jigging for kings in Sydney that rod would be way over kill for the job and you will struggle to get a bend in that rod, for Sydney the 200 will be ok for the job and 400 if you feel like you need a heavier rod. The reel will be fine and a lot of ppl have been giving it good reviews.
  10. Hi Mate, k have a mate who used the Certate 3500HD for light jigging and does ok, I am sure there aa few others out there jigging with this reel. How ever I don't think the Certates was designed for jigging, although in saying that i persoanlly think using a certate with light jigging with samller jig such as <100grams would be no problems. If the Saltiga 4500 is out of the budget have a look at the catalina 4500.
  11. Hey Brooker Boy, Global tackle is a Daiwa tournament dealer, the eastest way is to give the guys a call and see if they have in stock.
  12. Well done on the Tailors, those are cracker green backs, i have not seen any going that size for while. Good effort from the young fella. Cheers,
  13. Hey mate you can consider the Shimano Saragosa 18000 or the Spheros 18000 as equalvilent for the Saltist.

    How Heavy

Hi There, I would suggest you get a rod capable of handling 50lb, as a rod that is rated to 12kg line does not mean it will handle 12kg drag, unless it is stated on the rod that is has a drag rating 12kg max Drag. Line rating and Drag rating is totally different stuff. I am not familiar with the pfleuger contender reel so I can’t comment on it. If you getting dusted it may be worth while looking at upgrade your rod to a rod that can exert more pull pulling and make the most of 50lb and 80lb line to stop the fish getting to the reef, as even If you go up to 80lb as soon as that line touches anything jaggered the line will go, as braid is strong but won’t handle abrasion. Where as with a strong rod you can put more hurt from the start and get it away from the danger zone, but some fish is just not stoppable and that is why we all keep coming back.
  15. Got to be happy with that!!! Top effort on a nice schappa!!!
  16. I second the PR and FG knot, when tired correct i have 100% confidence in it, as above sails trough guid with easy as it is not bulkty at all. I use the FPR knot for heavy jigging and locked up on PE10 the knot held well. You can get the tool to do the knot but i was shown to do this hand, it does take a bit of practice and time to do the knot but once done right there is no looking back for heavy application. Cheers, Sz1
  17. Good work on getting the hit, it is always beeter to have faught and lost then to not hooking any. As stated above ditch the mono you can get away with using 50lb braid, the idea is short pump and winds and once you have the fishing heading up you need to go hard and keep the prussure on, don't give them breathing space or you will regret it later. Cheers
  18. Hey mate simple fix just give shimano spares a call on Tuesday and they will have the part sent out, it is that easy with Shimano, their number can be found on their website. Cheers, Sz1
  19. Hey Mate, if you keep the squids seperate bucket by them selfs they will last a lot longer. the Yakkas and poddies will stress them out. Also use air pump for the live squids and yakkas if you not already doing. Hope that helps. Cheers, Sz1
  20. I agree, I pserosnally like the looks of the T-Bar Handle, however i prefer the standard egg shaped Stella handles and the ball handles on the Daiwas, they just feel much better when you are jigging.
  21. HI Mate Slinlky has hit it on the head, the pit fall for upgrading the drag washer in the Saltiga to carbontex is that the carbontex washer does not last no where near as long as the original drag washer. However what it lacks in that department makes up in smoothing out the drag especially with Saltiga’s where they experience drag spike and start up inertias. What I have found with my Saltiga EXP 6500 was that with the carbontex drag washer installed you really need to watch when you are dialing up the drag, as a small increment equates to huge amount of drag increased. Funny mistake to make, I was in Perth early this year smashing the sambos and I dialed the drag up a little and I was hanging on for dear life as a rampaging Sambo was trying its best to pull me over board, mate just laughed at me. Cheers, Sz1
  22. Lord Howe just screams keg sizes kings, travelly on roids and yellow fin barrels, persoanlyl i havce never been there my self but it is definately one the place to go, depending on the type of fishing you plan to do the stick need to be capable of stopping those beast they have there, if throwing lure i would seriously consider maybe a popper rod you can look at a Shimano GT Special (rrp$500) but if you look around you may be able to pick up a second hand one farily cheap or can look in a monster mesh popping rod which can be had for under $300 brand new. If live baiting from the rocks i would have no idea what type of rod to use. look forward to your report Cheers, Sz1
  23. Good work on the king and downrigging efforts, looks like you guys have it don pat. Re hooking the squid i normally do as u said 7/0 live bait hook through between the eye making sure the hook point is exposed, sometimes the skin on the squid tend to deter the hook point abit so i alway make sure the hook point is well and truly exposed, if it is a large head go up on hook size and when using full squids i use 2 hooks one through the top of the mantle and lightly pinned on the bottom of the mentle or lightly pinned somewhere in the head. Cheers, Sz1
  24. HI Mate, Well I just brought along some 2-4kg flick stick with 2500 reel and a couple of 4000 size reel spooled with 20lb and lone Pe3 Jigging Outfit. I sacrificed clothing and other stuff for my tackle, bearing in mind I had to bring enough gear for 5 ppl to use. With the GT’s around I think they are pretty hard to get and the ones in the marina is some what like a pet for them over there and no one fishes for them. I didn’t go on any charter so I wouldn’t know what gear to bring, but I did see they had TLD’s on board when they came in. For the local land based stuff I would just bring a long a 20lb combo for a bit of fun and maybe a heavier outfit to live bait under a balloon, as said the local ferry jetty next to the airport is a gun place, there is a lot of snags when you cast out so we just dropped bait at over feet. Hope that helps.
