i have the navionics on my fone..you can pik rises and ledges mark them on your app then I write them down and punch the cords into my hds5...Swansea doesn't have a lot of good reef we get a few reds and do alright on jew an trag nth of catho and down off bird island..apart from a few small pinnacles you only have the sharkfin then the farm..a lot of guys travel down to the perch grounds which they mistakenly call texas.which is actually back in 55mtrs not 90mtrs...its 24naut mile down there..sometimes in summer I head north to uralla off birubi which is only 22 naut mile then you travel home with n/easter up your backside making for a better trip home..all the best for sat..a lot of the shallow reef sth of mawson breakwall down to catho is pretty dead.inc jetty reef ...but there is some good ground sth of wybung..rick

the bladed sand anchors with a sliding ring so you can motor over them and they pull out from the front of the blades will work on rubble and gravel as well as sand...I use a mooloolaba pik with a breakaway and if it doesn't hold I attach a small sand anchor with 4ft of chain to the front of my pik..never move but still pull up with bubble an clip..rick

everyone has differing opinions I use 10lb braid on spinning reel.some of my mates use 30lb braid on spinning or o/head...ive caught some good cod over 90 cm and never had a prob most of these while spinning from bank and some of a night..lots of guys go with 30lb but I find it restricts your casting distance..wait for some more input from other fr readers..you will see what I mean..rick

coal shaft is basically shallow so you don't need extremely long ropes out...I go in close drop large sand anchor just before the start of boulders then motor out twenty mtrs drop mooloolaba pik with heavy chain onto some decent looking rock and weed then pull back into the middle of both...even if wind swings during night you are sittin with both holding..i generally anchor well inside of larger boats that way if they are hanging off single rode they wont end up near me..coal shaft has heaps of room and also the next part of bay to the east is ok as well..rick

heading up the coast sat to pik up a 90hp for my vsea staying at mates at eungai thinking of trying warrell ck on the yaks ..has anybody any info on the creek...rick

as a side note forty years ago we never caught salmon on beaches north of Newcastle..when the pros stopped catching large quantities af them the schools started creeping north...now there is that many hundreds of tonnes of them on the nsw coast they push up as far as coffs harbor now..all they do is eat..the squid fishing has declined in my area over the last ten years as the salm,on smash all the young squid..some days off Swansea there is ten or more schools of salmon 100/150 mtrs across and forty feet deep..im talking hundreds of tonnes of useless fish eating every squid yellowtail slimy and anything else that swims..they are now b eing caught in lake mac in increasing numbers..they are in there eating whitebait prawns small squid etc etc ..hardly anyone eats them..they are classed as SPORTFISH..try catching numbers of slimies out of Swansea good luck the salmon have decimated them..i wish the pros would catch more because some days up here all you can see is wall to wall eating machines that are no good for anything....salmon were never caught up the coast its the sheer numbers of them that are making them range so far north..anyway that's my rant .im not ashamed to say I dislike them..sometimes they are fun to catch but are a pain when they eat every livie you have targeting more prized species...rick

late sept is a good time..big question there are dozens of cod lures..everyone has faves I usestumpjumpers spinnerbaits surface walkers big paddletail soft plastics..there are fotos in previous topics ive posted ''new England cod and others'' there are lots of colours made but most are designed to catch fisherman not fish..mybest colors are green frog..yellow black stripes..purple..green orange...enter cod in the search function and you will find heaps of topics to sift thru check fotos in gallery and look for colours that others have had success with..rick

lay your anchor out and hang back..go back 15/20 mtrs further drop second anchor and move back forward so you are sitting between the two...simple..rick

cuddy cab with bimini ..protection from wind an rain when anchored.especially if clears added..consoles are open to elements which you stated you want to get protection from..rick

copeton seems hit an miss at moment ..three of my mates fished it two weeks ago and didn't turn a reel..we all normally go alright on cod but the boys were devoed with nil result...the westerly winds and cold seem to be shuttin em down..there was a rumour of 1 fish caught 103cm but no one seen it...rick

the vee behind the boat...hes talking about the deadrise..the angle of the hull at the transom..flat transom sit more stable but bang travelling..deeper vee transom travel better but not as stable at rest..rick

cut two vees on either side of cardboard box and sit in front of tv for an hour drinkin beer with the heater on that way your your epoxy wont go white in the cool air..keep spinning rod by hand...thin your epoxy out with a few drops of metho and give two or three thin coats for a better finish..rick

my vsea is 1980 mod no probs luv it..fished out of dozens of boats over the years owned ten different boats myself..i wouldn't own a tinny..my thoughts only but ive seen enough mates buy em then sell em...my best mate owns a 5.5 stessl striker and has had it welded up four times so far..it only takes a couple of sinkers and hooks or swivels to start electrolysis in alloy...plenty of people like alloy that's why they sell so many..pik out pluses an minuses and work out what will tide you the best..if you like fishing estuaries in shallow water glass is quieter its generally more comfortable a ride than same size alloy...if you want to be able to drag the nose up on the bank and tie up to things alloy is the go.....everyone has a different opinion..so I wish you luck in your decision and hope you get heaps of enjoyment no matter what you choose...rick

I have had heaps of encounters with makos..you should be scared..my biggest is 310kg on 24kg and scared the crap out of us when it jumped completely over our boat a 23ft huntsman...I have also had a 70kg model come over the gunwale chasing a trag into the boat it landed on the floor and went berserk..i use a berley pot on my boat..bags of berley tied to small boats or especially yaks are a recipe for disaster waiting to happen..200kgs of mako draggin you round will give you something to be scared of..a large white could be worse and don't think they aren't in close in shallow water...my advise is be careful...rick

good to hear you are well again..lucky it was your back and not a limb missing..i use a chainsaw all the time in my work and its amazing how many people take the dangers of there use for granted..hope you get a few more fish .I love readin your reports..rick

heading up near kempsey on the weekend and buying a new to me 2nd hand 90hp yammie..my baby has had a 60hp yammie on it since I bought it..great motor good on fuel just lacking a little in power in a working sea.decided to go 90horse to get a bit better travelling speed for less revs..a 24 knot cruise has me doin 4500 rpm..hopefully this figure will drop so I may still use moderate amounts of fuel..i normally use 30/35 ltrs fuel to run from shoal bay to broughton and return..i hope to use same or a bit more as the theory of more horses less revs less fuel will be put to the test..should have it running in two weeks so I will put results up when I make a trip...rick
