  1. Good to hear you getting out of the classroom for a while for a bit of practical pleasure @DerekD, those two fish are a terrific catch. The bream in particular looks very clean and healthy, which may explain it punching above its weight.
  2. Agree 100%. I was lucky enough to be taught by my uncle, who to this day was the best wormer I’ve ever seen. And that just reminds me, new laws have recently been introduced in Booderee National Park and I think it’s now illegal to take worms and pippies for bait from beaches inside the park. @mazzs248 you could confirm this at the information centre.
  3. You’re right in the fact that Cave Beach is very flat and gutters are far and few between. If you head up the east end of the beach away from the track, there’s a bit more structure. Bherwerre Beach, just a 10 minute walk from Cave, fishes heaps better for whiting and although it too is featureless, the fish are roaming the flats and will find your bait soon enough. Just walk down a bit to get away from the surfers and try there. There’s a pretty good tackle store in Huskisson, if you’re going that way drop in as they often sell fresh school prawns, which when peeled make a nice whiting bait.
  4. If you’re heading out Stoney Creek way, take a look at Moes Rock and the spot under the old lighthouse. They fish far better than the area around Stoney in my opinion. Just got to make sure there’s not too much swell.
  5. You’re still only a hop, skip and jump away from the point in your new home. Send the kids up for a cast when they’re over for a barbecue and chuck those tailor in the smoker, yummo!
  6. If you don’t already know, part of Governor Head and the rocks either side of Steamers Beach are sanctuary zones now. Do a google search before you head out to avoid any nasty surprises. If you have time, drop into the park’s information center on the way past. You can grab a map with all the spots and walking trails marked from there, plus catch up on a few fishing rules that don’t apply to most other areas.
  7. @noelm has given you the best advice. About the only thing I could add is if you’re into sharks, there’s plenty of smallish, bronze whalers in close off the Jervis Bay beaches at this time of year. Early and late in the day is the best time for them using any kind of fish bait like pilchards or a mullet fillet.
  8. No, the bottom end would be 4g, but best to check the actual rod first and make your own opinion, as my post was referring to surf/rock spin and sea bass style rods specifically and then only the ones I’ve handled and cast with.
  9. I took a look at the pics this morning and wow, what a beautiful home Noel. Once again, good luck with the sale/auction.
  10. Exactly, and when you narrow it down to where the specs are suitable, then you can fine tune your choice to things like the taper and butt length. Good luck with your choice and welcome to the group by the way.
  11. I’m not familiar with either rod, but the best advice I can give is choose a rod that suits the lure weight you want to cast the most and then go from there, selecting the matching braid weight and reel size afterwards. Don’t just go by the specs on the rod as I find manufacturers rate their rods differently. Just an example, in my experience the ideal casting weight for a Shimano rod is around the middle of their rating, but a Daiwa is at the bottom of theirs. For the tailor, mulloway and salmon you mention, I like something that casts 35-50g, but that’s just personal and what works for me considering the lures I like to throw.
  12. Thanks Noel, I’ll take a look tomorrow.
  13. Good luck with the sale mate, I hope it all goes well for you. Do you mind if I take a look at your home on one of the real estate sites? I spent the last 8 years of my working life as a real estate photographer of similar properties and would just like to see the pics.
  14. Fishing for blackfish one day under the Crookhaven Heads lighthouse a pelican scoffed down my father-in-law’s catch, keeper net and all. Tourists love pelicans until they come back to their car at the boat ramp after parking under a light pole and it looks like someone’s poured a litre of white paint over it.
  15. @NewToFishing, seeing your new to rock fishing, the old saying that was drilled into most of us as newbies, is never turn your back on the ocean and always keep one eye on the swell. Along with this, be extra cautious if the rocks near the edge are wet and if fishing a new spot, always have an escape plan should you be washed in. Sometimes you may be able to swim to a beach or possibly a protected bay to get out yourself, but remember to take any current into account as you’ll have difficulty swimming against it, particularly when wearing a life jacket. Use the search function here on Raider/Deckee to seek out more rock fishing safety tips.
  16. I meant to add Mike, that I crush all the barbs on my bream and flathead hard bodies. I started when I first got a kayak many years ago after watching flatties go ballistic on the deck, just inches away from “the jewels”. You need to pay attention with rod work to keep any slack out of the line and I’ve never noticed any reduction in fish making it into the net. Still leave the barbs on my jigheads for plastics though, as I believe it helps keep the flatties pinned when their head breaks the surface and they start thrashing around.
  17. Good going Isaac, when the prawns are thick in the inlet it’s definitely a sight to see. Probably what I miss the most when I lived over the other side. If you don’t eat the tentacles, those squid heads make a top jew bait off the beach and now is the prime time of the year to chase them.
  18. More “I shall returns” than Douglas MacArthur Mike LOL. Sounds like a great week away with the family and just goes to show, you never stop learning in this game. Especially in hindsight. Those Alvey, bakelite tackle boxes are highly collectible and often go for ridiculous prices. I still have my father’s along with his bakelite reels.
  19. Very nice Noel and seems like a great price for a location like that. I’m sure you’ll be happy there and a nice easy lawn to mow is a bonus.
  20. Good to see you out getting a few Isaac. So much tastier than anything you buy in the shops. There should be some good ones running in the inlet as well.
  21. Yeah same down here due to all the rain. There’s still some down on the ocean rocks where the seepage is running out of the cliffs around the intertidal zone. @Paikea, perhaps you could check similar areas around your way for some.
  22. Google Marquee directors chair. I have a couple of them and they’re quite comfortable though rated to 110kg and about $65, which might be close enough. I got them from that place that sells the sausage sandwiches, so they’re readily available.
  23. Great report and little session adding a couple of new species to your fly caught resume Mike. Always good to catch up with mates for a cast or two.
  24. @Stelz I hate to burst your bubble mate, but that’s a tarwhine, not a bream. They’re a bit rounder at the front of the head and have those dark stripes running down their flanks that you can easily see in your photo. All the same it’s a terrific fish and the biggest tarwhine I’ve seen come out of the basin by a fair margin. Excellent catch. Glad to hear the weed edges worked for you and more than happy to help.
