  1. Yeah I always see them before dropping a trap in and when I drop it in they just seem to ignore it
  2. This may sound stupid but I’m struggling to catch poddy mullet or any mullet in the Georges river. I have managed to only catch 2: one on a sp (35cm) and one on a sabiki jig while jigging for herring (my alternate to mullet). Truer burley and everything and they just don’t like to eat. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong since all my usual traps and float fishing techniques work down south.
  3. Hard to decide between my biggest flathead (80cm) and my first legal Jew (70cm). They were both milestones for me. The flathead was caught on 4lb line and a small squid strip in January 2018 and the Jew was caught in January 2020
  4. I’ve caught a few pike eel while fishing for Jew and wow they put up a great fight even on the heavier setups. I noticed that when I went out for Jew, the pike eels were biting in a very similar way and until i felt the dead weight when i hooked one, I thought it would’ve been a Jew. However I would never try to even attempt to unhook one even if I was desperate. Everybody gangsta til the pike eel bites your finger off.
  5. So that’s what that clicking sound at low tide is?
  6. I’ve had lots of success on nippers. Caught my pb whiting at 40cm on a nipper and I’ve also caught some nice flathead on them. Great bait
  7. It wasn’t caught in a protected zone. I released it as well
  8. Is it really a nipper? If it is it’s a very dark one. The ones I catch are Usually much much lighter. Maybe it’s because this one was caught in mud and the others I’ve caught in sand. But it had more of a prawn like body.
  9. I found this yabby looking creature under a rock yesterday at low tide on the Georges river. Can someone tel me what it is and if they’re good bait
  10. I know I know but I do really need to respool. I didn’t realise I had such little amount of line left
  11. Btw the bait was servo prawns. Last minute stop for bait 😂
  12. I had more than that but I didn’t have a full reel. I need to respool
  13. Went out kayak fishing with one of my mates on his grandmother’s kayak to fish on the bay for a few hours. Launched at around 11am from Sandringham near the 16ft sailing club. We paddled out towards the edge of the channel and we casted out our first baits. I casted my bait out first and the line just kept peeling off as if I was in really deep water. I thought “there’s no way it’s that deep here” I flicked the bail and my rod loaded up and the fish started running towards captain cook bridge. After running for a good 5 seconds I made the decision to chase the fish down. Without rod holders, this was a challenge as I had to have the rod in one hand and paddle with the other. It spooled me 15 seconds into the fight and I felt some big headshakes. I made an early call that it was a Jew and after it stopped running I managed to get some line back. During this period however, a Large cruiser went past and produced some big wake. For my own safety I had to face the wake to avoid tipping over and get over it before I could keep fighting the fish. After the wake passed the fish made another run and took me to the knot again before another head shake which pulled the hook. I was devastated. After rebaiting I managed to catch a few little flathead and a little whiting. Paddled in at about 1 to go eat lunch.
  14. This is what they looked like. I didn’t know that there were river gars. The only ones I’ve ever caught were eastern sea garfish which taste so good. However we did eat these and they tasted pretty good.
  15. My mate, my brother and I recently caught a few garfish in the Georges. Only ever seen them in the system twice prior to this in Oatley bay and at como pleasure grounds. Are they common here because I thought you needed clean water and weed patches to catch them. Places like Shoal Bay at Port Stephens or Port hacking river where it’s clean water is where I’d expect to see garfish and are also places where caught garfish in the past but never in the Georges. They weren’t the biggest fish btw. The three we got were around 20-25cm each.
  16. I’ll make sure my areas allow taking crabs
  17. I sometimes catch soldier crabs in my nipper pump but I’ve only ever seen them out in the sand maybe once or twice
  18. You may have seen my report on fishing with live crabs for bream which I have deleted because there was nothing really to report. I fished the old sandstone wall of what would’ve been a boat shed on the Georges river. Had the crabs pinned in the back and just let them float down weightless down the water column. This method worked for me but I want to see how others use crabs. Have you had much success on them or are cranka crabs better? (I’m to scared to snag my one). Should I fish them weighted or keep going weightless Ill definitely be back out to fish the crabs again and hopefully get some bigger fish but between now and then I hope to learn a bit more on how to use them.
  19. Nice fish man. I recently caught my first legal jewfish and it’s such a good feeling isn’t it? Well done 👍🏽
  20. My mates dad recently caught a squid in jewfish bay on a prawn. As we were getting it in the boat it unfortunately came off. I have heard of people catching and seeing squid here in the past. I also understand that squid can sometimes get lost and end up upstream. One guy I was talking to said that he used to get squid off the wharf in jewfish bay about 20-30 years ago. I thought you would be lucky to get one as far up as captain cook bridge. That’s a long time ago but is there a chance of a population of squid in the Georges river or was this a lucky occurrence.
  21. I’m not sure what’s going on tbh. We found a school of yellowtail and slimies with a kingfish in amongst them but once the kingfish came through a few times they all disappeared
  22. I was out on the bay yesterday as well. Really quiet fishing and only small fish were around. Hopefully things change
  23. I was fishing for flathead and bream when I caught that mullet. Man I thought I hooked a huge flatty or little jew
