  1. hey dudes, been workin on my walk the dog tecnique..... how often should i pause, and for how long? also what are you thoughts on weedy mudflats, rather than sand... the bait is there in a big way!! i am mainly interested in flatties, and i've been using poppers to cover all that stuff we usually drive past cheers, ian
  2. i think you will be fine with 10 pnd depending what you are chasing... i use 10 pnd fireline on a 3000 and it handles big flatties, and mid size pelagics too...it breaks well above 10pnd.. i use a 12 lb leader or 20 lb depending on what i'm chasin hope this helps ian
  3. that is so cool... i used to work at darling harbour.. all those wasted lunchbreaks lol well done ian
  4. nice one i will try that.....i use cornflakes usually
  5. paintin the house, but i will squeeze a spin for flatties in there somewhere as they are fired up atm.. ian
  6. hard to compare as there was no photo of that fish: same family different fish i think...maybe that one was a black cod too lol...my first thoughts when i caught him were ooh an estuary cod, but the saddle shape last stripe makes me tnink black sadldle cod... where is BF on this one...
  7. i looked this one up a bit before i posted this and i thought it might be interesting......i think i have seen them while diving but i am not 100%.... these guys are true groupers, unlike our blue groper which is a wrasse ...confused? lol
  8. i am sure its an epinephelus of some description, great advice pete... the main difference between the two seem to be that the convict groupers last stripe on the tail seems to go all the way to the bottom of the tail where ;on the black cod (or black saddle cod)... the last stripe is shallower and saddle shaped, like in my pic.... http://www.asfb.org.au/research/tsp/tfp_brockcod.htm or here http://www.julianrocks.net/fish/bigfish/bi...Damelii1040.jpg sorry mike its not a cale, that other discussion you refer to is not relevant here...they are nothing alike.... look at the dorsal fin( it starts near the head on the cale), mouth( the mystery fish has a cavernous mouth) and tail for starters(one is concave and one is convex)...plus they don't really look anything alike... thx guys keep up the good work ian
  9. funnily enough i have seen a million rock cale and this isnt one.... look at the mouth and the tail... and also funnily enough they don't start off life as a 2m 80 kg fish... they have to grow.... i will post it in id for a more defininative answer
  10. thx for the info on the black cod...i knew i had seen a pic of this guy somewhere.. he was released to fight another day anyway as i would never eat a fish that i couldn't identify.. no luck on the jewfish front with one run just after dark..... we did score a bunch of nice tailor though on pillys and i spun up 3 nice ones.... i got a 47cm flatty as well so that was a nice addition... kept two choppers i will post pics tomorrow flat battery on the cam what a day i'm stuffed cheers ian
  11. hey raiders... quick one... mate rang at 6.30 am..."hey dude, no wind 2 drummer 2 squid already.." i needed no more prodding .. headed down there and caught an undersized drummer almost every cast for about 2 hours with 2 big wipeouts on good pigs... groundswell today made things interesting this morning we got pretty wet a few times.. i told my mate i was sick of using his inferior prawn baits and went and got the "super bait"...a piece of bread and caught this bopper.. what is it guys????? our wash slowed down then we spun for squid for about half an hour and i pulled these guys, my first squid i've ever caught which is sweet.mate got 3 as well.. now for stage two.....off to the beach even though i am stuffed... nice tide tonight might get my first jew too cheers raiders fish on ian
  12. best jew i've seen came from the georges at 27kg ....3 am phone call "look whats in the ute" that was around picnic point
  13. my favourite place down there...at least you didn't tell anyone where it is..maybe i will c u down there one day
  14. nice flatty man..whether or not you keep is between you and fisheries... davemmm... just for your info man i place just as much importance in releasing my big bream as i do my big flatties ever since we ate a 51 cm model bream and found out how old it was (circa 30 years)... i get what you are saying though.... flathead have become everyones favourite fish to protect... maybe the best protection would be too stop throwin all our fancy lures at them...hahaha congratulations mr rb on a flathead of a lifetime well done..
  15. haha thats my local .... still gets the same now lol... actually i think some of those blokes are still there.... at least the rods they used are lol.... blackfisherman are the only bunch of fishos who can stand on eachothers toes and never get annoyed
  16. woke up 5.30 am... hit snooze woke up at 7 oops// o well decided to pick up $1 worth of bait (loaf of bread) and go anyway... first cast undersize pig ...nice start.... caught about 10 drummer most just undersize and a cpl of legal ones...kept one for lunch... first day i haven't caught a blackfish in a while..... rig was two small sinkers straight above the hook on 9lb mono... i could take a photo but you all know what a 30 cm drummer looks like..... so the pics are from last weeks effort this blackie went hard on the light gear... we also caught a stack of those happy moment things...really big ones more than 50 cm easy
  17. i'm with ceph on this one....i have eaten freshwater ones but not saltwater... good luck..
  18. i use 15lb mono leader when chasin flatties, only short like 40 cm.....on 10 pound fireline... they don't seem to care too much... unless its super clear then i might use fluoro about 10 pound and back the drag off a bit... for bream spinnin the 4 and 6 pound will let you cast lighter lures further, and this is vital when casting little lures or unweighted plastics to spooky fish ...
  19. top work and story, think of the years of work you have saved him... this is definitely a two way street...i enjoy reading your tips and i'm sure the young fella appreciates your knowledge firsthand.. btw if you ever need a packhorse look no further ian
  20. thats how ive been gettin em too on scaled down drummer gear on bread... no float...
  21. i hate that knot there is a much better and stronger version in g. wilsons book or on the platypus website ian..
  22. spot on, immediate consumption is fine, otherwise you are supposed to go to your nearest designated fish cleaning area... stupid hey, i argued the points of this with a fisheries bloke on south coast Re: leater jacket we were cleanin on the rocks... he told us we couldn't in case they were undersize, and we needed to go 5 km north to the nearest cleaning station. We pointed out that there was no size and if you leave the head and guts in a leathery on a hot day they go bad... 15 minute later he let us go with a "warning"...
  23. bad luck on the drummer... i am going down this arvo for a drummer/squid sesh i use bread pretty much exclusively unless my mate is braining them on peeled prawns and then i will chuck a few around...bread just seems to waft around nicely with only a little weight, and one bite usually tells you its time to rebait (like nippers)... i too try and constantly keep my bait in motion i only use cunji now on my more exposed and gnarly washes with a bit more weight..its a balancing act keep that rod working ian
  24. soap is no good for the system....try putting two screws or nails on either side o fthe hole in your trap, then rip a hole in the middle of your slice of bread and place it it the trap so the screws hold it in place... stops them pulling bread out...also when you get a some, leave a couple in the trap when you put it back... this will encourage more mullet to jump in
