  1. Hi there, Click the link at the very top of the page for knots, and practice them at home before you head out. If I were you I would stick to the wharfs and some more sheltered sandy areas targeting whiting, bream and flathead at the moment. You don't really want to be going rock fishing at this stage as by the time you have gotten snagged for about the hundredth you will be wishing you had stayed at home. When you get to your chosen spot have a look to see what the other fishos there are doing, what bait etc What spots have you picked out? I am sure some one on here will have some tips for particular areas and what you can expect to catch Good luck and welcome to Fishraider alasdair
  2. I'll second Yarra Bay, nice spot. Also went down to Bare Island for some squid on Tuesday night and watched a old bloke that I chatted to for a bit land 3 nice drummer just on dusk. Good luck alasdair
  3. I normally take a couple of different set ups. Take a light 2-4k outfit for catching bait/flicking plastics for bream, flatties etc. If I'm live baiting at browns rock i'll take my heavy 12ft rod with 30lb mono. Some guys use floats, others don't. It's up to you. I use a 10 ft rod with 15lb mono for other bait fishing, running ball sinker to keep it simple, or a single hook paternoster. Good luck and I hope the weather is kind alasdair
  4. Hi Nathen, I assume you are land based? Bare Island is always a good starting point, just be careful depending on the swell. Good for squid morning and evening. Not just around the foot bridge, move around a bit. The usual suspects of the rocks. Yarra bay for flatties off the sand. After some bigger stuff, salmon, kings etc, head around to Browns rock beside the golf course. You can catch some squid and yakkas there for live bait but it does get busy. Hope this helps alasdair
  5. Merry Christmas everyone Did all my Christmas dinner prep at work yesterday so now thinking if I can get a couple of hours fishing in before the weather change hits and picking up from work. Have a good one alasdair
  6. Hi dsaun, I fish the rocks at south maroubra a bit. Not much off the beach. Browns rock and Bare island at la perouse sometimes. Browns is safe, plenty bait and good fishing. There was a report on this site about a good king caught there last week. Will be trying to get some fishing in soon depending on shifts, send me a PM if your interested in some company. alasdair
  7. Bad luck not hooking up but at least you were out there. Went out with Ross Hunter a couple of weeks ago, didn't catch anything but one of the other boats had a double hook up, think they got one to the boat. They are around. Better luck next time alasdair
  8. Great days fishing. Two big, healthy looking flathead. Very well done alasdair
  9. Not tried plastics from there but it is a good consistent spot to get squid and yakkas, use a small jig close to the pylons. Plenty of kings lurking around the structures as well if you want to chuck out one of the livies you get . What size of plastics are you using? The smaller the better I would say for that spot as it gets pretty busy and the bream are getting wise to it. You could always hire a kayak and try for some bream around the moored boats, some of them look like they haven't moved in years and there is lots of growth on them. Good luck alasdair
  10. I have the Catana, can't complain about it for the price. Have it matched to a 2500 Slade. Cheap and cheerful set up. alasdair
  11. You can fish off the outside of the wall, the north edge on the map, but not anywhere inside. You will see plenty people fishing when you get there. If you bring a light flick stick, be prepared to climb down the ladders to get your fish, it's a bit of a drop!! Have sent you a PM. alasdair
  12. Some really nice fish. Well done on a great day. alasdair
  13. Thanks again for a great day Ross. Had a great time, as did the rest of the boys. Will see you out there again soon alasdair
  14. Cheers for a great day Ross and Emu. Can't beat a good days fishing. No kings but it didn't look like the other 20 or so boats at the peak were getting much either. See you next time alasdair
  15. Hi guys Until I can afford my own boat I will continue to venture with the likes of Ross and Glenn, its a big ocean out there and they know where to start looking. That big one is still out there waiting for me. Always a good day out with you boys. See you out there alasdair
  16. From time to time at work we get kingfish that turn to mush even although they have only just been seared. I trust our supplier and know that it is fresh so that is not the issue. The fish was probably ill in some way. Would defiantly take it back. alasdair
  17. Sorry to hear you boys didn't catch anything on sunday, would have still been better than being stuck at work Am in the same boat as you as far as my luck is concerned, defiantly over 1k, nearer 2k on big game charters both here, Queensland and Hawaii for nothing but some mahi mahi and small striped tuna. But will defiantly be going out again, just can't help it Good speaking to you this morning Ross, looking forward to some good snapper action this weekend.. alasdair
  18. Was up there last month. Bet you we getting some strange looks of the locals using the plastics gear. They were all using 950 spinfishers and 80lb braid... It is a great place to go for fishing, and relaxing, all I need the next time is an 8m custom longboat..... well done alasdair
