  1. Fished in the harbor about two years ago on a touristy half day charter. Caught lots of small gold band snapper, around 1.5k and other things that I can't remember the names for, close in to the mangroves. Moved out to a deeper hole and I got a 20K Black Jew, the other guys got ones at 15k and 11k best $80 I ever spent! Am sure the locals will be able to help you out and recommend some proper charters. Buy them a six pack of xxxx for their troubles and you'll be sweet Have sent you a PM Good fishing alasdair
  2. Try the Livefibre range, good value, well built. Have a 6-8k and a 10-15k. The lighter rod is matched to the 4000 symetre and the heavier one to a daiwa 6000 opus bull. Am pretty sure they have 8-10k rods that would match the baitrunner. alasdair
  3. Just bought the live fibre 6-8k south australian series not had a chance to break it in yet but feels very nice. Matched it to a symetre 4000. Will be able to handle kings and good size snapper, nice and light but feels like it has a bit of power lower down. Have fun deciding alasdair
  4. What is it you are targeting? There are lots of luminous lures in various styles out there. Snapper rigs, squid jigs, glow sticks you attach to your lure etc? And yes they do work, even during the day... just bring a torch with you. alasdair
  5. King George Whiting is one of the most highly regarded table fish in the restaurant industry, and it commands the same price. We can get it for about $40-50/K fillet weight wholesale, depending on the time of year. It is a VERY good eating fish but I would never buy it for home, will happily "taste" it at work though We are getting some very good Silver Dory at the moment, really nice chunky fish, so if you see some at the shops give it a go, about half the price of John Dory! Or you could get out and try and catch some, will always taste better when you catch it yourself alasdair
  6. Both boats are fully booked but PM hottscotty or Kiwi Dan just in case any one drops out. alasdair
  7. Great fish. Very well done. Just shows you don't need to head out deep to get some good fish. alasdair
  8. Try on the left hand side of the island as you go over the bridge, just after the broken rocky bit. There is a bit of a ledge and lots of weed. Got some there before. Pink or orange jigs. alasdair
  9. Glad to hear your back at home. Wish you all the best in your recovery and hope to see many more posts and reports from you in the future. Alasdair and Danielle
  10. Well done guys. Days like that is what keeps us all going back for more. alasdair
  11. Thats a good one but pretty sure it will happen again in 2109. still far enough away that none of us will ever see it again! alasdair
  12. Just PM'd you scotty for a place on Broadbill. Can't think of a better way to spend your stimulus money alasdair
  13. Hopefully we'll have more luck than the last time we went out Steve. Didn't expect that many replies! I get first dibs alasdair
  14. Hi guys, Was wondering if there is going to be a Fishraider Tuna day this year? Still a little early I know but its a great day out, and I still need to catch that first yellowfin alasdair
  15. No kidding, I was just about to post the same question. Heading up on the 24th of this month. Sorry to jump in but would anyone have any charters/hire they would recommend, could you PM me as well. As for fishing from picnic wharf what tackle would you suggest? Chris, if I catch anything when I'm up there I'll let you know what and where. alasdair
  16. Its the best fast food. Beats a Big Mac any day!! Warm it up by wrapping it in foil and 10 min in the oven. Crusty bread is defiantly the way to go Enjoy alasdair
  17. Great fish!! What did she pull the lie detector down to? Well done alasdair
  18. Hi there, I have a canon 350D and would defiantly recommend it or the 450D. I have never had a problem with mine but try not to take it with me fishing every day due to the rough and tumble aspect. My every day camera is an Olympus MJU 1030, waterproof and oops proof. You will probably get a lot of recommendations that are either going to be Canon or Nikon. Both have excellent cameras and it is much like the Shimano/Daiwa debate that we see here all the time. Best advice I can give is to buy a good quality, water proof padded bag to carry it and your lenses in. Also look into good second hand lenses that will suit your style, some of the ones that come as standard with the cameras aren't that great. Good luck alasdair
  19. Very nice fish, will make a lot of people on the site very jealous, including me..... well done alasdair
  20. Merry Christmas. Hope all the raiders have a good one.
  21. Cook them now. Chuck them in some cold iced water to cool them. Pick them and freeze the flesh. Spread it out on a large flat tray so it freezes quickly. Won't be the same as fresh but its the best you will get for christmas. If they were still alive you can put them in the bottom of the fridge covered in a wet cloth and some seaweed. The cold slows then right down. I have kept lobsters alive like this for over a week, crabs four or five days. hope it helps alasdair
  22. Am heading up to Cairns for a Longgg weekend in January and am trying to do as much fishing as is humanly possible . One of the charters I want to do only takes up to four people, can't be bothered spending good money to spend the day untangling lines every five minutes. So, and I know its a long shot, is there any raider(s) in Cairns on these dates that want to catch up for a fish? If there is send me a PM and I'll give you the charter details and we'll take it from there. Thanks alasdair
  23. Hi there. I have just bought a 10-15K Live Fibre for pretty much the same reasons. It is the RLF8 model and its 6'6. There is a 7' 8-15K model. The only reason I didn't buy that one was because it is one piece and would have trouble taking it the plane to go on holiday. alasdair
  24. Cheers guys. I have fireline on one of my lighter outfits and am pretty happy with it. From what I've read the guys that fish with the stronger breaking strains don't seem to rate it as much. Hi Josh, yep hopefully get into some kings Have looked up the Sufix performance and it seems to have some fans, might have to give it a try.. Thanks again alasdair
  25. Hi guys, just bought myself a birthday present. Daiwa Opus Bull 6000, and a Livefibre RLF8 10-15k rod. Looking to spool it with 30lb braid and running 25lb flouro leader... The question is what braid to choose, what are the advantages/disatvantages of the different types. Look forward to reading your opinions alasdair
