  1. Make sure and check which marina your charter leaves from.If it is from Ko Olina then it is about a 40 minute drive from Waikiki. Don't have an individual charter to recommend in Honolulu. I found it difficult to try and arrange a share charter as most would only book the whole boat, which is why I ended up driving out to Ko Olina. alasdair
  2. Hi there, I did pretty much the same as boattart last year. Smaller boat out of Kona for a very reasonable price. Was there for my wedding so had a couple of the guys come out with me, but the next time I go back will be going solo. More chance being on strike when the only marlin of the day hits!! If you would like contact details I will send you a PM. Good luck Alasdair
  3. Cracking fish. Well done. Lots of very jealous Fishraiders sitting at home at the moment... alasdair
  4. Hi there, Yes there are lots of under size fish along that stretch but if you stick at you will come across some better ones. I got a 75cm flattie and a 42cm blackfish there about three weeks ago both on yabbies . Pulled the luderick from a big submerged log. I have caught a few fish on plastics but I find that if I use a fairly large bibbed hard body I get better fish. Wind it fast till you feel it dig into the sand, then let it float up a little, wind fast etc etc,, I think you get a bigger "puff" of sand than you do with SP's and the flathead love it. Good luck alasdair
  5. Hi there. What size hook, strength line are you using? There are lots of smaller fish around that will pick your bait of the hook. If you are getting bites I try not to strike at them as this just pulls the bait away from the fish. If it is a decent fish they will end up hooking themselves when the suck the bait in and swim away. Most people will be willing to give you a bit of advice if you go up and have a chat with them, see what set up they are using etc. alasdair
  6. Hi there. Try and get your hands on some live nippers or worms. Size 6 long shank hook, small pea sinker sitting on it. You don't need to cast far to catch fish. You can see the whiting feeding all along the beach at Brighton about a meter from the beach. You should also pick up some bream, trevally and flathead. I fish the area fairly often, send me a message and I might be able to meet up and show you a few things. alasdair
  7. Thanks for the replies guys. With all this rain we had today looks like I will have to give the lawn a miss tomorrow as well. Think I'll be doing some last minute Christmas shopping rather than going fishing though. Hi dchu. The fight was a a bit strange to start with, at first I thought it was some weed on the line but when I picked up the rod I knew it was a good fish. I think the heavier than normal sinker had something to do with this. And yes when it got in close it went nuts, some very strong runs when I was almost ready to beach it, have that drag nice and light. alasdair
  8. Had the day off on Saturday, which was nice as it was a good day to go for a fish. The wife thought it was a good day for me to cut the grass. Common sense prevailed and I went fishing.... Headed down to the sand flats next to St George Sailing club and pumped a few nippers. I know I could have probably cut the grass in the time I had to wait for the tide to go out but she doesn't need to know that. Moved along a little to the point where there is a deep channel that normally holds some fish. The tide was still running out pretty quickly, brown and lots of weed. It wasn't easy to keep the bait in area I wanted. Almost moved after a couple of casts but decided to use the heavier rod and up the weight. Ended up using a 3oz star sinker to hold bottom. Still used a 6lb trace so not to spook the fish. Ended up landing this really nice fat whiting that smashed my PB by 7cm. Really nice evening fishing and much more fun than mowing the lawn.
  9. Hi there. Try the public wharf next to Catalina restaurant. Plenty squid hanging around at night because of the lights. Good luck Alasdair
  10. Hi there. Burley up to bring the yakkas on, then put them out as livies. Plenty squid to be got close to the rocks as well. Pilchards will get you salmon, tailor etc. The bottom is pretty sandy, not much in the way of snags. It can get very busy which gets a bit annoying at times, get there early. Good luck
  11. Hi Kevin. Try off Rose Bay wharf. Plenty squid at night time time. During the day bream, tailor etc. Put a big rod out with a livie on it, some good kings around the pylons at Catalina. Try off the rocks at Camp Cove, Green Point Reserve, nice and safe. Take a little trip to Brighton Le Sands, Dolls point. Get some live nippers or worms and there are plenty of whiting and bream to keep the little one interested. If you want you can pump the nippers on the flats next to St George Sailing club, this is good fun in the summer but its getting a bit colder now. Give Yarra Bay a try as well, nippers and worms for whiting again, SP will get you some flathead. Good luck Alasdair
  12. Great fish . I think the head weighs 6K on its own! Well done!
  13. Hi there. As already said yakkas from the wharf at Captain Cook. Although the wharf on Brighton itself is closed you should be able to float fish under it for yakkas early morning. On the way to Maroubra swing past La Perouse for some squid off the rocks around Bare Island. Everyone fishes off the bridge but you can catch them anywhere in the area. Was the Kingie caught on the North or South at Maroubra? Good luck Alasdair
  14. Were you fishing off the rocks at Bare Island by any chance?? Caught a few myself alasdair
  15. Hi there, I used them lots back in the UK. Great for pollock! Can't see any reason they wouldn't work here for snapper and even kings. The smaller ones would be good trolled for salmon. Don't know where to get them here. But if you want the details of a mail order company that will send them from the UK I will PM you the details. alasdair
  16. Hi there, You can fish of the main wharf. Lots of small bait fish and prawns tight in against it. Plenty bigger ones around as well. It is quite high though so if you hook some thing decent, especially on the plastics rod, your going to have to climb down one of the vertical ladders to get it.The sand flats are massive but the signs everywhere warning of the crocs were enough to keep me to the wharf. There are other spots I was told about a little outside the main city but you'd probably need to hire a car to drive to them. good luck alasdair
  17. Pretty sure thats been taken some where of the coast of Scotland. PD is the registration code for Peterhead. alasdair
  18. Good catch well done. Think I saw you out there, I was fishing under the bridge on the Sans Souci side from about 3.30. Bad luck with the phone. alasdair
  19. Had the Olympus 1030 for a few years. Very tough camera, drop it on the rocks and it will be fine. Took it everywhere with me, perfect camera for fishing. Had it scuba diving to 10m and worked great. If you don't plan to go diving with it go for one of the 3m waterproof models, they are built just as tough. A word of warning on all the tough/waterproof cameras.... Make sure and check the rubber seals on a regular basis, wipe off an sand, etc that might affect the seal. If salt water gets inside :1badmood: alasdair
  20. I use a lot of fish at work and have had this problem with kingfish, and a couple of mahi mahi over the years. I use both wild and farmed kingfish and from my experience the wild ones are more often infected, but this might just be from stricter quality controls on the farmed fish stopping them getting as far as me. As for eating it raw I never have, it just doesn't look right. alasdair
  21. Good to have you back ... someone needs to keep all us boys in check. take care alasdair
  22. Try Rose Bay public wharf before sun rise. Every where around Bare Island at La Perouse, and the break wall and rocky bits at Yarra Bay in the evening. If your new to it I'd try Rose Bay first, it will be a little busy but it will give you a chance to see what everyone else is doing and what size, make of jigs they are using, types of retrieve etc. Good luck and make sure and post some pics of your first catch alasdair
  23. I printed one off the DPI web site and keep it in one of the zip lock pockets in my tackle bag that you would use for your packets of soft plastics. Keeps it dry and is always with you so you can prove that you right to the busy body. alasdair
