  1. G'day lbN,

I'm not a land based game fisho but I can give you a bit of a heads up on reels. Any reel can catch any fish... potentially... If you want a reel made for the job I'd suggest a different reel but if it's a real bargain and that's all you want to spend it's not a problem and is a pretty good reel. It just has a couple of shortcomings for the purpose.

The first is the level-wind. Level-winds are a problem on reels designed for high pressure fishing. When your line gets out of sync with the line guide (e.g. the line guide might be on the left of the spool while the line is coming off the right side of the spool), it puts a lot of pressure on the whole mechanism. With a fish on, it's easy for the level-wind to fail or be damaged.

The gears in the GTi series also aren't as robust as in say a Penn 113, which is about the same sort of size.

But they're well made, have a good carbon drag system, are simple and easy to fix or get parts for if you need to. For kings the line capacity won't be a problem (if any king gets more than about 30m of line off you, you're probably going to get busted off anyway). And big yellowfin are a pretty rare capture off the stones these days.

If you're serious about it, get a lever drag like a Shimano TLD 30 or better still, a metal frame reel like a Shimano Tyrnos... then when you upgrade, start looking at Penn Internationals or Shimano Tiagras.

  2. With the increased number of record claims recently, there have been a few questions around size estimates.

The Fishraider records section is first and foremost, meant to be a fun recognition of member's memorable captures... it's not for sheep-stations. So we've always been open to submissions with estimated sizes rather than enforcing a 'tape measure or registered scales' approach. Mostly, the submissions have been awarded records although a few possibly optimistic ones have been turned down.

For any fish submitted, estimates will only be accepted as long as the photo is taken alongside something to help with a length comparison (fishing rod, esky or with big fish... your body). Extremely large fish will still be accepted based on weight.

    BUT

Where sizes are close, precedence will be given to fish on some form of measure.

E.G. A measured 30cm record fish will not be knocked off by a fish with an estimated length of 32cm!! Yes, I know... there will be a grey area in the middle when a big fish with an estimated length will get a record over an obviously smaller measured fish.

All I can say is that the judges decision (moderators and admin) is final and put those sheep-stations out of your mind.

  3. G'day Smuz,

    Welcome to Fishraider :1welcomeani: :1welcomeani:

I moved your topic in here because you'll probably get more replies. Sydney covers a big area... whereabouts are you? And is there a particular style of fishing you like... beach, rock, spinning, etc?

Pop a post in our 'adopt a learner' forum... even if you've got lots of experience, you'll hopefully be able to hook up with some Raiders who know their way around some good spots and are willing to show you the ropes.

    Cheers, Slinky

  4. G'day Stinger,

I've got the same bluewater stick and it's a great rod for it's price and can put some serious hurt on fish. I had a 6kg Sic Stick Pro spin rod that I gave away after upgrading to a T-Curve but before that it was one of my favourite rods... really versatile and again, great value.

  5. Hey guys looking at getting a new reel in the 3000-4000 size.

Per the title I'm looking at both the Penn and the Abu, at the moment I can get the Penn for $20-$30 cheaper than the Abu - is the Abu worth the extra dosh? After a bit of searching both reels have been given fairly glowing praise (at least in the lower capacity models). Will be used primarily chasing pelagics land based, plan is to run 20-30lb braid. Also looking to match the reel to something like a Raider II Light snapper rod. I can get an Okuma Salina II cheaper again but not sure if that will be suited.

    Thanks for any input,

    Adam.

    G'day Adam,

    Get the Abu.

I love some of the small Penn reels... I have an Applause and I've opened up an Affinity (which is basically similar but a specced up version with a worm drive).

Both are fabulous but the Abu is a definite class above in engineering and performance. Better quality drag (not that the Penn drags are 2nd rate but they don't use their top-line HT-100 drag material). The Abu is the one I'd trust to last longest, stay smoothest and handle the toughest fish and abuse... oh, and I reckon they look better too :biggrin2:

  6. I notice in your report that you didn't mention phoning me to tell me about it just because you knew I wasn't allowed out to play :ranting2:

Nice looking fish, JH. Looks like the bigger models have moved in out the back. Time to get out the 3" Electric Chicken prongs :biggrin2:

Fantastic that JJ & L has that at their doorstep... not only for the fun they have now but in 20 or 30 years time they'll be the sorts of memories that bring a big smile.

Sunday is looking like the weather's good... want to hit the river (you might have to carry me to the boat) :074:

  7. Don't give up on it that easily. It's a simple mistake but very easily avoided. You might have noticed in any of my reel posts that when I pull them apart, every part gets lined up in-order on my bench as it is taken off the reel. That way, it can all go back together again in reverse order with some confidence that you have all the bits and you know where they go.

And even though I've pulled down hundreds of reels, whenever I'm taking one down I always keep the schematics at hand to check.

  8. Ok the missing washer was under the dog's food bowl... Now i have the same number of metal and fibre washers. One of the metal washers is just a normal round one, one is normal with ears, and the one i found has a big dent in the middle, then the hole. From the diagram this one must go on top, but which way? Thanks again for your help slinky

    :biggrin2:

Lump on the top (facing upwards) on the top washer mate. Eared washer in the middle. Flat, 'keyd' (square hole) washer the lowest metal washer. Fibre washer in between each, ending with a fibre washer on the very bottom of the stack (the 'dented' metal washer should end up on the very top of the stack)

No more stripping reels near the dogfood bowl :biggrin2:

  9. Now you're just showing off :biggrin2: :biggrin2:

What a fantastic experience, Ray. Great photos of some awesome fishing in an awesome location. Don't fancy being quite so close to those mud-geckos at water level much though. :04:

Great report too mate... keep it coming

  10. G'day Mako,

Nice session with some beaut fish. Shame about the big Snapper... maybe you need to start carrying a banana with you like I do now :biggrin2:

Don't know if I fancy the idea of testing a shark shield by being bait. Isn't that something you want other people to be doing first :1yikes:

Your Pike is a Snook and I think it's a raider record if you'd like to pop it in, mate.

    Cheers, Slinky

  11. yeh they did when the reel fell off the table onto the ground... :ranting2: i think i've put them back in the right way though- soft, metal, soft, metal- i also tried metal, soft, soft, metal and some other combinations but none of them have worked. I was hoping that that wasn't the problem

    Thanks.

Getting closer but still need to know the model details if you have them mate. I want to try to find the schematics so I can take a look.

The order of drag washers should always have alternating metal/soft washers by the way but it's important they are in the right sequence. Have a look at the general diagram halfway down this page...

    http://www.smoothdrag.com/settings.html

At least one of the metal washers in your set probably has 'ears'... make sure you're not using it at the top of the stack.

  12. Great to see the Raider network doing it's thing and giving you a taste of all the fishing we're lucky enough to have in Australia. If you can ever leave and go back to England, get all your friends to join so that our Raider UK connection and Rider Aus can help each other out with sampling the best fishing each country has to offer.

Well done on the latest milestone

  13. I haven't fished with a Medallist nor do I know anyone personally who has one so you might need to just do a little background work and go with your gut.

  14. A hard PVC rod tube is the way to go... most tackle stores sell hard rod tubes but make sure if it's a commercial one that it's heavy duty (I saw a photo once of 3 or 4 rods that went on board a flight to a remote fishing spot in a lightweight tube and came off again as 15 or 16 rods).

Make sure there is padding at both ends of the tube and wrap the rod in towels so that it wont slap or move around too much inside the tube.

Then get travel insurance and make sure it's covered... and cross your fingers.

  15. :1prop: :1prop:

I went out on our block at luchtime to have a cast with my new Nitro Outlaw baitcaster... as you do

Hmmmmmmm... matched it to my little Abu 1500 and tied on an SX40 to see if I could get a longer cast than with my old TraverseX. The new rod is 6'... the old one only 5'3"... so I guess it was always going to be a no-contest. Unfortunately, the big Melaluca about 20m away didn't move. :1badmood:

The little 4g lure was still going up from a 'ballistic' side-cast when it entered the tangled branches about 5m up, never to return. The good news is the rod certainly met my casting expectations. The bad news is that it exceeded them by so much I and my thumb were completely unprepared for just how far it will toss a tiny lure.

There's a moral to the story... I don't know exactly what it is but I know there is one. Anyone good at climbing who wants an SX40?

  16. Awesome Greg :1yikes:

Just in passing I thought I should let you know that I'm open to adoption. That looks a whole lot more special than the Black Queen Deluxe that also graced the 'tackle cupboard' in my youth!

Beautiful work on those rods

Looking forward to seeing some smiling faces and big fish in posts.

    Cheers, Slinky

  17. Hi Roberta,

Great news that the first few hurdles have been crossed on the long road... just need to make sure Keith doesn't decide to try sneaking out for a run when your back is turned until he's up to it.

I've got a great and incredibly easy recipe for creamy rice pudding... fantastic comfort food, delicious on a cold day, and guaranteed to be packed full of calories!! :biggrin2:

    Cheers, T
