  1. the brother in law has a etec 200ho on a 6m haines and uses 300-400mm of xd100 per 100l of fuel he only bottom drops so its 20-25knot cruise everywhere with next to no trolling unless conditions are too rough the peak 12 mile browns or the shelf further south as he fishes minimum once a week his oil and fuel bill are considerable higher then a boat used 10 times a year like many in this situation is neither here nor there in comparing the cost of xd100 to a filter and sump oil.
  2. thought etecs didnt have a run in stage ? and all those moving parts on the four strokes have been proven to run for 3000 plus hours, going off commercial use the etec has its own complexities and you just decide which poison you want to play with. dont service or maintain and all can play up
  3. some things to consider merc 150 suzuki 180 kilos merc 2000cc v6 suzuki 2044cc inline 4 i doubt the 140 suzuki will give you the perforamnce of the 135 black max you will use less fuel oil and experience less fumes and noise from my experience you need to go 20-30% larger in hp to get the same result but then the game of weight v what block is being used for a group of engines and capcity comes into play
  4. talk to the engine fitter as to what prop to fit and generally trial and error will be needed unless they have fitted one to your type of hull before
  5. if its cheap enough drive up yourself if its not cheap enough to consider this then its probably not worth the saving
  6. have used a handheld at the peak and 12mil of botany no dramas
  7. any service history on the engine, if not would you drive a 17 year old car into the wolderness with no service history ? buy a boat to do in th einshore stuff well and jump on a mates bigger boat and through in for fuel and have a better more reliable bay river boat
  8. i just fitted a 50hp four stroke yamaah to the same boat firstly is this a tiller or side console version cause the Yamaha tiller arm is second to none the mercury one looks like rubbish i havnt seen a suzuki one to comment.
  9. its probably got 5000 hours on it. buy it assuming it it will die at any time, have corrosion issues and been worked hard ask the question why are they selling it and theres your answer
  10. 3.5-6k for a transom or transom and stringers and floor somestimes its just not economically viable to do
  11. id say the charter will have something better then a hds7 sure the ripples wernt just the boat bobbing up and down with the chop ?
  12. should have said my first yamaha four stroke i cant handle fumes anymore after racing go karts and inhaling too much 16:1 2 stroke mix optis etecs 2 strokes make me ill now more so when trolling for a few hours with the wind behind
  13. the 50 60 70 yamaha four stroke are all 996cc engines and i think you will need more capacity then this to equal your 60 2 stroke i just got my first one and its bloody lovely quiet smooth bugger all fuel and no fumes ive owned everything from carbed 2 strokes from 6hp to 235hp a 90 optimax and a 75 etec and nothing compares to this for me servicing isnt dear 250 for first and 350 per year plus anodes if needed
  14. agreed or market value ? if market they will give you market value for the engine so you will have to pay the difference to get the two stroke anyway i would pay the difference to go to a four but unsure if a 60 four would be enough hp for you
  15. thats the point medic it doesnt always work it may for you but in some scenarios and differing boats it wont
  16. all gal trailers will rust the gal coating isnt there to make it last for ever it is sacrificial, if rust i sshowing through the gal on the main part of the trailer then its normally at the end of its useable life things like fittings bolts u bolts nuts plates get damaged during installation where new and should just be replaced
  17. i have a 420 renegade tiller with a 50hp four stroke yamaha The engine was only fitted a week ago so only have a few hours on it and havnt opened it up as yet You need max hp if running with heavy loads ie 3 fat blokes or loaded with gear cant comment on fuel usage as yet with such low hours but super quiet smooth holds revs and planes quickly, the 50hp yamaha is a 4 cyclinder 996cc engine vesus others with 2 cyclinder or 3 cyclinder and smaller capcity engines

    choosing a motor

another option is weigh up what you will get for your boat as it is running add the cost of a new engine and then see what you can get a few years old for the same money you will suprise yourself and go from a 30 year old boat to a 10 year old boat for less money then the repower alone just an option unless your sentimentally attached to that boat
  19. doesnt always work if a bit of surge my 530 cruisecraft even with a 12pd plough anchor would pull free at leperouse etc then swing around and risk snapping ransducers off etc if not paying attention
  20. for the bay a guided charter is on of the best ways to feel whats happening and about dont go on one of those $70 beer and puke bottom bashing boats but a $120-$150 outfit where there will only be 4-6 people you will learn more about the bay in one sesssion with who ever you choose then years sitting under a bridge
  21. the engine pad caused it, salt build up behind it and it etchs eats into the ally underneath as its never flushed nearly every boat will have damage behind the engine pad if left long enough
  22. you guys are looking at it from a narrow view point and just that of your own self interest. the issue is lack of parking infrastructure and the lack of boat ramps to service our waterways for the growing population. its to stop derelict boats being left on streets for years or around other locations where people who dont even live there just leave their boats in back streets as cheap storage "mad if you ask me for security reasons" they just fill it up after a days fishing and wheel clamp it in some random street to save towing it
  23. have a good google and ask around as more then a few of them have ended up upside down consensus was hard tops too much crap on top and tbh the hp on them seems a bit overkill and also that one that needed extensive repairs from new
  24. not sure but they hold their value even still despite the time ive been in 4 of these 3 owned by the one fella as he kept going up in size as he found them. the mas produced plate boats just dont compare in quality of build and you have the ability to option the boat in anyway you want, this does come at a cost though they mass produced ones do look pretty though
  25. i dont know how you can assume i havnt been in one i have been in many boats in our local bass clubs I was talking about sub to just planning speeds in sloppy water/weather, this is the point of use i was focused on. id rather have a fine entry point that pushes the water down, the stern of the boat does not matter in this instance 15-20knots knots in the bay in the afternoon when you should be home already, i have been in a 440 renegade in these conditions and it would be detrimental to any boat to try and get it up to 20 odd knots and try to skim over it its not a criticism of stacer , just they are two differing hull shapes to the op the main reason of a boutique plate boat is you can get what ever feature you want built into it and watch and control the process somewhat during the build the resale is generally higher then a mass produced boat, have a look at joshua boats as an example
