I have a few Alvey pumps and it may just be me but I find the long one a bit harder to handle.

When I do pump yabbies its at the Maianbar Sand flats so they are very productive even close to the surface so there is no real need for a long pump.

Generally , I think , most people would maintain a slightly bent over stance while pumping and what I found with the long pumps is its harder to get them to clear the hole when you are shooting the sand/mud out. If you don't get back up almost vertical then the pump catches on the hole all the time and interrupts the rhythm.

I am 182cm tall so that's not the problem.

So my advice would be that unless you need to get down deep, stick to the standard pump and invest in an Alvey.

    Cheers

I agree.   I have had the short alvey one since I was a kid (45 now) and it just feels awkward if I use a mates longer one.

And here I was thinking I was a weird for thinking that.

Yes,it applies to the overdrive top gears in a 5sp manual and above.A 4 sp manual 4th is it's  1:1 strongest gear.Older 4sp autos like in the commodores and Falcons for instance you should put the gear shift in 3rd while towing.

Yowie has given some great tips to everyone too.

Remember the harder the car has to work the higher the risk of transmission failure..

This is an example of how I tow using my 5sp manual Hilux and my 6sp auto cerato.

With the Hilux I tow on the freeway using 5th gear when the road is flat and slightly down hill with a tailwind. As soon as there is a slight grade or I'm travelling into the wind I put it in 4th.

If I'm climbing steep grades it's usually 2nd or 3rd gear and when decending steep grades it's 3rd or even 2nd depending on the severity.

With my cerato I keep it out of drive and manually shift gears from start of trip to finish using all 6 gears as above.I only use 6th on perfectly flat, slight downhill with a tailwind.

I do something similar in my 5 speed manual jackaroo I use top gear but am very aware whilst towing to not use 5th under load.  The V6 seems to  like a few revs.

My 68 fairlaine with C4 likes to stay  at home.

For those with an auto I think a transmission cooler would be a great addition as well.

    Good topic guys.

  3. A couple of years ago we had a boat on Boatsales and gumtree.   The boat was in top condition and we were asking for the price to match.

We had a few come to look at it from Boatsales and liked it but didn't buy for various reasons, mostly it was bigger than they imagined it and storage in their situation wouldn't work.   The eventual buyer came from gumtree at the advertised price.  One viewing a water test a few days later and that was it.

I remember a few low ballers but I would ignore them or play games with them.   I never give out my address until they are leaving home and on their way.   To many no shows wasting time otherwise.

  4. I find it funny how people avoid all kinds of things that require effort than rush off to the gym.  We have guys like that at work that go hard in the gym but can't lift anything useful on site.

I usually pull up the anchor on my boat too.   Nothing gets damaged and it's ready to go for the next drop.

No worries I get temporary amnesia after I buy fishing gear. Most prevalent around the Mrs. Sometimes I even say others have bought it.

    Strange phenomenon.

The best story I've heard is buying some expensive gear and getting the shop to phone up when the Mrs is home saying you have won the lucky door prize come and collect it.

Bought one of the first millennium hull quintrex's to come out of the factory. First run on Botany Bay I needed all three of my adult crew to sit on the starboard gunnel just to try and keep it level once on the plane. Boat went back to the dealer from the north shore who claimed to of sorted the issue but Unfortunatly it still handled the same ( they had fitted a plastic sport trim to the engine).  This did make the boat handle slightly better but if you hit any chop the boat felt like it was constantly trying to dig into the port side ( lean to the left ).

Boat went back to the dealers who found everything seemed to be ok, asked them if they had tested it on the water, which they hadn't. By this time they thought I was just a whinging Pom, but asked if I would take their fitter and mechanic out on the water. Headed up to palm beach where the boat drove ok in calm water but as soon as I hit a little wash from a passing boat the mechanic said take me back this thing is dangerouse as it dug into the left.

The boat was then shipped back to QLD where quintrex removed the floor and added extra ribs to the floor and some how managed to melt a hole through the large esky seat and leave deep scratches along the painted sides. The hull was full of deep bumps and dents from the added ribs.

I eventually got the boat back and headed out of Botany to the kink, not really noticing any improvement. On the way home the boat dug into the port side again so badly the boat almost overturned and my wife ended up going overboard injuring her back on rod holders as she went.

For the next few months I battled with quintrex who simply were not interested. I also contacted BIA and found when it comes to boats you have very little you can actually do in terms of compensation, simply because as long as the boat floated and traveled across the surface of the water they were pretty much in the clear.

7 months on after 4 trips to sea I sold the boat on at a loss of $14000. I informed the guy of all the dealings and problems I had had with the boat which he was ok with as he claimed he would only use it for calm river use. 3 weeks after the sale I was contacted by his insurance company as he was trying to claim $24000 which had been the price I had paid, the boat was claimed to of been stolen.

A few years ago after vowing to never buy another quintrex I bought another, this time a small red and white little 385 explorer with a 20 hp Honda. This was a great little boat and one of the higher spec models with carpeted floor and full fitout.

I always wash down my boats with saltaway and flush the engine but soon noticed after just a few months the paint blistering away around the rod holders and hand rails ( factory fittings). This seemed to be some sort of ellectricle corrosion which was even happening to my trailer, even the winch post was powdering up. I took the boat to my local boat dealer ( non quintrex dealer) who claimed they do that. On quintrex's defence there are many of their boats that don't suffer such problems, this was simply a dealer who wasn't bothered and that boat was fantastic apart fro dissolving.

After close to 12 months I lifted the floor to see if maybe a sinker or something had been dropped under the floor causing the problem. Eek I then saw how badly pitted the floor had become especially along the welds. At this same time my mate was having the same problems with his brooker which had been purchased from the local dealer mentioned earlier, only his was already leaking.

Anyway sold that at pretty much the value of the trailer and motor and have stayed away from aluminium since. My buddy with the brooker went on to buy a 6.4 trailcraf that cracked along the hull on a weld which converted him over to glass boats too.

Another mate has a 20 odd year old ali Stacer and the paint looks like new apart from fading, so it's either better materials or those who fitted out mine used the wrong materials.

    What a saga!

My Stacer had paint bubbling issues within months of leaving the factory.  All fittings where factory.  Despite washing after use and storing in a garage.

But some guys seem to get lucky with no issues for years.

I use fuel stabiliser always and just decided I need to use my boat more! ?

Just keep using the boat all year it's necessary for good preventative maintenance.   It's not that I want to go fishing I have too!   Anything else would just be irresponsible.

    HI Raiders,

Hope everyone is doing good, I was fishing the other night in hacking and got this old man who started saying all of his stories and he was a great mate of our precious mate Jewgaffer (Byron) who we lost in 2013.

heard some amazing stories of our champion may his sole 'Rest in peace'

This man said that Jewgaffer(Byron) made a website. does anyone knows the name of it ?

Please pass the name of the site will be muchly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tight line.

    Dil

    Cungee George?

pretty sure jewgaffer referred to him often

  9. Every body always says it depends what you want to do with it.   Trouble is I want to do heaps of different stuff.   So I reckon  I need about three boats and two kayaks.

I haven't been in an alloy Surtees but like the idea of the water ballast.

  10. I am wondering if they stop selling the reels it will probably become hard to buy a matching rod as well.  The type with short butt, big first guide and often the line holder guide.

I havent really fished the beach or rocks but do own two Alvey reels but no beach rod.  My longest rod is like 7ft. ( I do have a 13ft cane one of my pops but won't be using that).

One reel is 7 inch I got new as a kid the other 6 inch that we caught rod and all fishing the Hawkesbury around 30 years ago.  It came up like brand new with a little TLC.

So my question is should I get a rod suitable now whilst they are still around or do most beach fishos use an eggbeater now anyway?
