  1. I have some special fishing tackle from my grand-dad, but don't know how to use, anyone explain please ?

    post-11890-128227625286_thumb.jpg

Line is wound around the thick end then cast using two hands , one to hold the handle the other to cast , or if your really good , can be held & cast in one hand.

In essence , if you took a rod butt & fitted a spinning reel it's the same except the reel has the revolving cylinder to retreive the line

  2. rick I used to use Ferropro but it no longer available.

I wanted to paint the rear of the boat trailer which receives a dunking on each launch & retreival

The paint store reccomended a product called NoRUST made by Norglass Lab . at Punchbowl.

I then over painted it with Silver enamal. That was about 6 months ago & there is a small amount of of surface rust beginning to appear.

I think if I had used a killrust product or Galmit it would have been a better overcote than just plain enamel

  3. dhype I found the deans in the Jaycar cateloge but not the sermos. Where can these be purchased?

Hamuwaja Do you keep your batteries always charged?

Yes , check the battery every 2 3 weeks if I have not used the boat during that period.

Battery testers can be purchased from the larger marine parts dealers for around $20. This is a quick & easy way to determin the amount of charge in the battery.

like plugged in all the time? does it make it last longer?

Not sure . may be a risk of overcharging & causing damage. Perhaps another FR could advise

I just make sure i kick mine over every 2 weeks, and run it for about 10 minutes in fresh, also just to clear any old fuel in the lines.

OK for the fuel but the power used to start the motor may not be replaced during a 10min run

  4. Removing & replacing the battery cover on my boat to charge the battery is , due to it's position , difficult so thinking of installing cables from the terminals to an external plug.

The wireing is straight forward but which plug / fitting to use.

Anderson plugs look good but at around $40.00 are perhaps a bit of an overkill for this job.

Has anyone fitted an external fitting?

    What plug was used?

    How is it set up?

Has there been any issues , especially from a corrosion aspect?

    Thanks

  5. In essence foils provide lift & on the right set up will put the boat on the plane at lower rev's / speed.

I have a permatrim & think they are slightly better than the Sport 300 as the surface area is larger. However , on the other hand the Permatrim is around $70 more expensive.

The other thing I've noticed is the ride being a bit softer when traveling into a swell , both going up & down. It acts a bit like a rudder but in the horizontal position

Saving fuel. I've not noticed any change ,some suggest there is a slight increase as the foil can add more drag.

More speed. Unlikly , As mentioned above , the foil is there to enhance the lift coming onto the plane. Once on the plane , other than some assistance when in a swell

    there is no benifit.

If you decide to proceed I suggest you select either the 300 or Permatrim as the "wing" style can be dangerous

They can dig in & tip the boat onto it's side

    Geoff.

  6. Moister on the plugs does not sound good. I had something similar happen a few years back. Repairs were not cheap so traded it in on a new motor

Suggest a PM or call to Craig at Huett Marine

  7. I visited Byron today. He is recovering from a chest infection but sitting up & issueing instructions to any one who will listen.

Printed off all the replies as at this morning which he read through & wanted to thank all for their well wishes.

Looks like he will be in hospital for a while.

The doctors have indicated a plan , which may change as time progresses.

Remain at Campbelltown for about a week , transfer to Fairfield , operation on one hip 30th , reabilation & assuming all goes well the 2nd hip operation a few weeks later.

They are also going planning to attend to his hands which are still not in good working order

All up , around 8 weeks

I think he will have computer access on occusions during that time so he may pop up on the board during this period.

Will advise when there are further developments

  8. My dad is looking at buying a 1990 mercury 15hp to use on a tinny. it has 103 psi on each cylinder. He is not sure if that is good or bad. Can anyone tell me what good compression for this motor/age should be please.

    Thanks Prawn Star

103 psi is not good. New motors are normally around 130 - 135psi. However , the main thing is that they are even.

If the motor runs OK & the price is right then worthwhile considering

  9. Spoke with Shirley last night , not a lot to report other than thinges are going in the right direction which is good news.

There is talk , Byron is to be transferred to Fairfield Hospital as that is where the operation is to be done.

Byron has seen this thread via his daughters laptop & is most appreciative of everyones best wishes.

    Geoff

  10. As many know , Byron has , from a mobility aspect , not been well for some time. Initally it was recovering from a back operation & more recently his hips , both of which need replacing.

Assesment earlier this year put him on the waiting list & during that time the situation has deterioted.

He was scheduled to have one hip replaced next Monday but that was deferred to the 30th August.

Last night the pain was such he was admitted to Campbelltown hospital.

When I spoke with the family today he was still under assessment.

Will advise as news comes to hand.

I'm sure all Radiers wish him well

  11. Just wondering what everyone does to get their outboard started quickly after it has been sitting unused for a couple of months?

I have a carby 2 stroke oil injected yammie (key start). If it's only been sitting for a couple of weeks it starts first go every go. But if it's been a while, like over winter, I give the fuel line a pump or two, then try starting it up. I'll crank it for about 3 or 4 seconds, then stop for 5 seconds or so before having another go. It will start after about 5 or 6 goes. It's no big deal, but is there something in particular that causes it, such as stale fuel, and is there a sure fire (excuse the pun) to get it fired sooner?

I also have a 2s O.I. Yammie & it does the same thing when cold. After a short run I turn the motor off it will restart instantally.

I think the problem comes from oil residue on the plugs when standing for a period of time & it takes several cranks to burn off the oil film.

The way to test this is prior to the next outing , remove the plugs & give the gaps a clean.

The other thought , & I will stand corrected here , pumping the primer bulb only moves the fuel to the carbies , not into the cylinder head & it takes a few cranks to get the fuel from the carbie into the cylinders.

Perhaps it's a combination of both

The type of oil can also play a part. I used Valvoline in a Tohatsu & it worked great. Put it into the Yammie & starting was very difficult.

Went back to Yammilube & there was signifient inprovement.

It's possible the XD synthic oils would be a further inprovment.

As for long term storage , I have never run an engine dry & left the internals unprotected.

As others have suggested , it easier to connect the flusher & give the motor a run every 2 or 3 months.

If there is a need to store the motor for long period , ie 1 - 2 years then drain the fuel from the carbies

  12. Hi Geoff and Fester,

Thanks for replies, I use to be a pro at crowdy back in 80's,I left in 86

and have not been back down,my days were no gps all marks where taken with left and right angles.

I still remember all the marks,I know the mountain range is the same, but worried about large lone pines

we used especially for trag and jew,we will be moving back soon around coopernook.

Geoff November will be great thats when big snapper move in.Breeding time .

Let me know when your coming up,I hope to be back by then,I told Byron the other night I was moving back,he was talking about you.ALL GOOD.

    cheers Rick.

Rick Will definatly be in touch if the trip eventuates. Should know by early October

  13. How many Raiders spend a lot of time at Harrington

    and Crowdy Head.

You can Pm if U prefer.

    Cheers Rick.

Rick. . Humsey has rercently spent some time at Harrington , perhaps send him a PM.

A recent artical in one of the fishing Mag's gives Crowdy Head a big wrap especially with boat launching & safe access to the sea.

Access to the sea at Harrington normally requires crossing the bar so the 7 km trip to C.H. is well worth it but if you prefer river fishing then the Manning river is the go.

If you make the trip , will be interested to see your report as I have a trip to Harrington penciled in for November

  14. Just as a side issue , I think it would be benificial if the 3 "fishing" parties got together as one with an united adgenda.

I think a lot of potential voters are scared off with the word "shooters" & "fishing" only focus on one sports aspect.

The word , Recreational has been suggested on other sites but Recreational can mean a lot of different things to different people.

Perhaps to place a bit more focus , Australian Sport & Recreational Party or , Australian Fishing & Sports Party.

    Anyway , just a thought.

I also note , there are currently 11,816 reg members on FR but to date only 174 hits on this thread.

I have sent E Mails to family , friends & fellow fisho's with a link to this issue.

We need to spread the word.

  15. From a tech. / spec aspect the 3 units are similar.

Price wise the Humminbird & Garmin are $200 more expensive than the Lowrance however , if I'm reading it correctly the external GPS aerial for the Garmin is an additional $89.00 , Humminbird , $220.

It appears the Lowrance inc the GPS aerial but this needs to be confirmed.

Based on the above , I would be leaning toward the Garmin as I prefer the horizantal screen but the Lowrance would be a very close second.

  16. Bloody tree huggers, if they had their way we'd be back living in cave man times.

Yet they still eat their sushi, fish n chips etc, drive cars, have old ships, live in timber homes, all resources they would like to ban yet they still use, hypocrites.

To much of the devils lettuce me thinks, has affected intelligence and common sense.

    Cheers,

    Leo

Yep , agree. I think we all have a degree of "Green" & that's good , but this is just over the top.

All fish'os , family & friends have a chance to stand up & be counted in a few weeks

    Geoff

  17. Have a scroll through this web site for the proposals being promated by the Greens

    http://www.environment.gov.au/coasts...ubs/fs-afa.pdf

It's been mentioned before that fisho's tend to be a laid back group which tend to go with the flow.

From what I'v seen on the web over recent weeks , that attitude me be changing.

It will be interesting to see the Greens V's Shooters / Fishing party Senate results after the election

  18. How would you go about anchoring?

    I

In the photo showing the bow mount , there is a white rope with stripes near the bow roller & running off to the left.

    This is the anchor lanyard.

It remains permently fixed to the front bollard , over the bow roller & along the side of the boat.

The below photo shows the laynard which is normally stored inside the boat. Being out side just for photographic purposes.

The anchor is dropped over the side & when the anchor rope is ready to be tied off , the lanyard is connected & released so the anchor is pulling from the bow spit.

The tail or slack of the anchor rope remains inside the boat ready to retreive the lanyard , unhook then pull in the anchor
