  1. Last year we sold the Polycraft and the old tinny to buy a new Makocraft Topper Tracker. This boat goes perfectly on the roof loader so we can go away in our caravan.

Luckily Stewy’s brother Steve used to be a panel beater in his early days. The boys worked on it for a week or so doing mods.

This is a selection of pics from start to finish. They may interest others thinking of doing a similar project.

  2. It has been sometime since we have taken a fishing trip or any trip really. We have had some health stuff to get sorted and our family arrived back home from UK. Loving being grandparents.

This report is not really a fishing report. In fact despite trying there were about 6 fish caught all week! I will leave it here though for the moment.

It contains info for others who may be looking at a setup with a caravan, car and rooftop tinny.

We spend one week at Lake Hume in the Discovery Park Victoria followed by 2 weeks at the Mulwala Ski Park VIC/NSW for the last 3 years. Both have great facilities as you will see in the pics below.

Swordie spent a while organising the appropriate rods, reels and tackle to take. The lures are many and varied. We targeted Redfin at LH and Murray Cod at LM. We tried plastics, hard bodies, vibes etc but no fish there. We attributed this to the water level going down so fast.

DAY ONE The drive from Sydney to an overnight stopover at Gundagai broke up the drive. Free fast park wifi 5g and our auto satellite enabled us to watch TV and stream. It also has a weighbridge so we can check we are safe.
Top pic is the drive through site with an ensuite and bottom is the rig on the weighbridge. All weights perfect and in order. Well done with weight distribution swordie!

DAY TWO to DAY EIGHT We arrived after a leisurely couple of hours drive at Lake Hume. The first thing that hit us was the low water level.
The pic below shows current state (top 2) and bottom 2 in past years. You will see the back of our van! Normally we just push the tinny into the lake and tie it to the tree at the back of the ensuite.

We also usually carry a Bulldog collapsible trailer on the back of the van. It takes a bit of time putting it together and getting boat onto it to launch at a boat ramp. We happened to see a device called a Tinny Hitch and bought it. We did not take the collapsible trailer.

It worked perfectly and there is another post in The Bar showing the loading, unloading and launching of the tinny using it with the set of wheels we have. It is only good for a few 100 mtres at max.

During the week we tried very hard to catch Redfin. We had about 10 sessions mostly Stewy alone. Weather was very hot with 2 days at 37 - 39 degrees C. The caravan park has a fabulous resort style pool and we took time to rest and keep cool swimming.

I even asked on a facebook local fishing page for some help. I posted up my Deckee trip map and most said it had been very poor fishing. The guru of the area said he had no reddies this summer. A few other blokes added some helpful comments. Then another plays the "secret spot game" and mentions lures that he has some connection with!!

I know why our community is THE best, we actually help each other. No raider spirit on fb.

Stewy managed to catch about 6 Redfin and we had just one fish dinner.

The rain came one day and Swordie went out of course ........ nothing again!!!

We decided to call it quits and take the boat out of the water a day earlier. That was when we encountered some serious problems. A post is to follow on the event that occurred.

It could get expensive, but I’ve been purchasing hard bodies and blades all along and barely using them! So I have enough to use and lose😎

The brag mat is a daiwa fish measure R, available from an ISO shop. It is retractable. I thought it looked nifty so I had to snaffle it up!

    Catching anything is worthwhile Mike!

I like the way you try all sorts of methods and tackle. Very scientific!

That’s a bewdy, that brag mat.

Would be great to have FISHRAIDER along it as you open it out :)

Our old ones were called “the measure of success”

  4. The lady wasn’t taking a leisurely swim. I heard on news reports she was wading/swimming to a nearby boat.
She was really close to the jetty and lucky she was able to yell out to neighbours.

A couple of YouTube channels you could look at are

    Matt’s fishing escapes

    James’ fishing adventures

Both are right into squidding and use techniques that you probably won’t see here in Sydney - well maybe not very often !

Also Spikes fishing Australia, Mel is a gun fisho and catches lots of squid both inside  Botany Bay and outside . Maybe you pick up a few tips and tricks from these channels .

( Before anyone ask - I have mentioned Fishraider To Mel on a few occasions hoping she would join but maybe it’s not her thing ? You can lead a horse to water ……)

I Generally avoid facebook groups for any useful info as I found  that most  groups are full of twits who just want to make stupid comments - definitely something you will NOT see on Fishraider!

It used to be her thing!

I have been on a women's fishing fb group for years. Mel is also a member/moderator. About 3 years ago I put up a pic of a hairtail I caught and Mel asked me "amazing, would you tell me how to target this species"? I linked it to my very in depth report on Hairtail here on fishraider.
Pretty sure Mel was included on a Deckee "Women in Fishing" write up too.

She is very commercial now and no time for forums. Once sponsorship happens they have a few extra rules.
I lurk around the fb groups and visit sometimes to read the absolute rubbish there.

I might be biased but Fishraider is still the best place to find info and meet some great folk who all like fishing and boating :)

    Hi all,

I thought there were some very good comments in relation to this article so I tracked down the creator of the video and sent him the link to this topic. He took the time to come back with the following response.

That was fun to read all of the discussion. Thanks for sharing. Next time I make a similar video, I'll have to consider multiple viewing angles to capture movement in all directions. I've also heard suggestions to include different types of lures. There are so many combinations of lures, knots, and lines/leaders, it may have to be broken into several videos!

Sounds like there may be some follow up videos incorporating the Raiders observations.

@DerekD I hope the video creator joins fishraider and joins in on the conversations 👏

  8. Thanks for your post. It highlights the importance of protecting skin and eyes when outside.

Sorry you suffered heat exhaustion. Take plenty of water to drink often.

Sunscreen is essential. You need to find one that you are not allergic to. See a specialist to get your skin checked regularly.
Hats and protective clothing must be used. There are buffs and hand protection gloves that are effective also.
Sunglasses are another item needed whenever outside too.
We have a member who is an optometrist who wrote this post on the right sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Swordie is about to have areas treated on his nose by his specialist dermatologist in just a few hours.
His love of fishing has resulted in many, many treatments and excisions. He goes every 3 months and has treatments.
    Please have your skin checked.

  9. It's a bit exciting when they come to do filming in your area.

I grew up in Coogee and we had many shoots happening around all the beaches, cliffs and suburbs like Maroubra. It was popular and agree Frank they had to use lots of space to set things up.

I was the subject of a documentary in 1974. It was ABC Chequerboard and they filmed me for several weeks. They came to our small flat, my school, the beach, a party I went to. They brought lots of lighting equipment and Mum got a few dollars for the electricity bill. I was just 16, doing my school certificate and had my 1st boyfriend who was 20 and had a sports car. It was in stark contrast to the 2nd part of the doco who was a young man from Mosman was doing his higher school certificate. He was not allowed out at all except to a matinee movie or to kick a ball on the beach with school mates. He was not allowed to have a girlfriend or do anything out of the boundaries set by his mother.

So I saw the production side of things from a different angle.

Back to the original post (thanks Ian)

https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/business/invest/filming-in-hornsby-shire  a bit more info on the filming

The actual new Australian TV Drama is called The Last Anniversary. Book written by Liane Moriarty author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.

Nicole Kidman is in the cast and also produces the 6 episodes for this first series.

    Look for it on Binge
