i was reading a article that had some stats on circle hooks today
"This fishery is NZ's biggest inshore fishery for both commercial and recreational fishers.
tying versus snelling graph
The sea trials used four 116 hook longlines which were set daily at sunrise.
The lines were left to fish for 1-2 hours.
Longlines were used to avoid any angler bias due to the different abilities and fishing styles of different fishers.
Each set of the longlines had circle hooks on half the traces (snoods). The other half were a combination of Octopus and O'Shaugnessy hooks.
The graph below shows the circle hooks seriously out performed the popular J shaped hooks in all size classes of snapper.
The much higher catch of undersized fish on the circle hooks is of some concern.

ok well i have no problem catching livies
my bait grounds are always full of yakkas and it takes about 5min to fill my tank
but actually using them correctly is where i fail
when im downrigging i just pin them threw the nose with a circle hook and have them runnin about 10 meters behind the boat havnt had much luck with that of yet
but when im at anchor whats the best way to use them
i have just been pinning them threw the nose as usual and just throwing them out and letting them swim
and they always end up under my boat and getting tangled with other lines
should i be putting some weights on them to keep them down if so how much weight and how should i rig it up
thanks in advance

nice work
the beaches is always a good spot for bait
on our fish on saturday we pulled in around 30 yakkas with the average size of about 30cm within about 10min
only problem was that the kings didnt want any thing to do with them
nice work on the squid too

thanks for the advice
all went well bomb showed up on sounder with 0 problems
such a great help being able to track bomb
shame didnt help with the catch
didnt catch a thing
better luck next time
-
when installing a down rigger do you have to have the downrigger installed on the same side as the transducer for the fish finder for it to be able to track the DR bomb??
thanks hopefully ppl are still awake

nice looking fish there
you must of been Hungary that fish is already covered in tomato sauce
hopefully some of your luck comes my way i would love a few of them

thanks for the advice guys
ive gone with flush stainless steel
as for the 2nd downrigger clip im going to see how it goes this weekend
might just add another rod holder a bit further up then the current one but have it at a different angle so the rods dont clash
or i might just scrap the second one and just get another downrigger some where down the track
its yet to hit the water so ive gotta catch some fish before i start thinking of 2 DRs
thanks again

All the best mate
doctors these days can do amazing things
im sure you will be back on the water pulling in big jews in now time
best of luck
-
cheers for the advice
i think ill just skip on these type of rod holders
and just stick with solid flushmount stainless steel holders
cheers
-
yeh i just walked over to the shop and took a look
i like my tight drag too much i think a big king would bend the thing in half
i plan on running 2 rods off the 1 downrigger so i want to have 2 rods off one side of the boat
what do you think of these ones
there all stainless steel and have been double welded to ensure strength
the center pole is one part that black thing in the middle is just a rubber plug to make a snug fit into the current rod holder
-
im replacing the rod holders in my boat with some nice stainless steel ones
then i saw these and was thinking i might get them as well since i run 2 release clips off the one downrigger
but do you think these would do ok against a big king and with the slight possibility of a double hookup ??
"Holds three rods at one time. Designed to fit snugly into a flush mount rod holder. Constructed from aluminium and nylon plastic. The joint connecting the post to the holders pivots with a tightening screw used change direction of rod holders. The centre rod holder has a quick release mechanism fitted so that you can get to your rod easily when needed"

nah never used heavy line
but in all truth i only ever used the thing for about 3hrs in pitty
was using 10lb main line with a 20lb 6foot leader from memory but i never got a hit using lures
i tried again a few weeks later with squid but the seeker kept flipn over so i gave up and bought a downrigger
they just seem to weak and im sure they would break
esp when i read reports from fellow raiders saying you need stainless steel rodholders when your going after kingies coz the plastic ones tend to explode like a bomb with a big one takes your bait
if that happens to the rod holder on the boat i dont see much hope for the seeker in the water
they would still be worth a try there lots of other smaller fish in the sea
found this quote on another site regarding your seeker
"The product is NOT for saltwater fishing in less than 2 days both were distroyed by fish! The product got the baits down but did not hold up to the preasures of the fights. This product should be used for light fresh water only, walley and such."
-
yeh i did some reading on the one you got and it sounds good
found some good reviews on them
my only concern with them is the actual diver itself being smashed apart if/when a big fish takes your bait
and this is prob why it has such a small line rating
i think there more suited to lakes not big powerful salt water fish
-
ive used a fish seeker in the past but never had much luck
never seemed to work corretly using baits as it kept flipping the seeker over so it would surface with the bait
they work well trolling lures they seeem to keep them at depth
but i never had much luck but i really never gave them a good go
this is the one ive used.

ahhh its all so clear now
thanks for clearing that up Grant
cant wait to actually get out there and catch some thing with it

evening raiders
i recently got some advice from here regarding a new reel for downriggin so i went and got a shimano TLD combo
just looking over the specs and theres a few features i have no idea what they are and how to use them
just wondering if some one can fill me in
"Clicker increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm when a fish bites
Max Drag at Full w/ Freespool: 22 lbs
Max. Drag at Strike w/ Freespool: 17 lbs"
so what does this all mean
cheers
-
cheers for the advice
i think im going to go with a TLD 15 combo as its the cheaper option
and ill use this just for downrigging
then later down the track ill pickup a spin reel like Josh said
ATM i already have a decent spin rod that i can use on the downrigger
it was only a cheap one so its days are numbered but it will last me a little while longer
thanks again for the advice
-
thanks for the quick reply
ive priced it up and its comes to $313
any other suggestions
-

i dont have any preference to a certain brand i just want some thing that will do its job well
price range of up to around the $300 mark
thanks in advance
