    Yakkas

I was on a charter last week and the guy taking us out said if you love sashimi, yakka's are awesome. I didn't try it but my mate took one home. I've heard before that they are quite tasty. Might even try it if I get one big enough.
  3. Mate if you don't mind a drive, go down to Coalcliff. Fish on the rocks all the way on the south of the beach. Take a small rod rigged with a bait jig and a bigger rod. Use bread to burley up some yakkas then get them with the bait jig (with prawn/squid pieces on the hooks). Throw one out on the big rod and see how you go. Pretty good spot but you have to get there super early as it gets packed on the weekends. Also a good spot to get some delicious garfish
  4. I went up there last xmas and a nice place to fish is fishermans bay. Theres a ledge on the north side which has a bit of a drop off next to it. I only really fished it once but was able to get some yakkas and was busted off by something quite big.
  5. Hey Pinkus, I too just started using poddies for bait and have been catching most on small hook and line. Mine are also quite big and I have only been getting flatties. I like your idea about placing some poddies in a bait trap to attract others, might try that myself because the trap hasn't been working at all lately. Cheers
  6. Cheers, thanks for the reply guys. Think I will try both, have a squid jig on standby and might even try the spike a go.. I'll let you know how I go.
  7. So this morning I went for a fish off the rocks near Wollongong. I caught some small yakkas and put them out live on my bigger rod under a float. First one was bitten clean in half and only the tail was left. With the remaining ones, I could see the float go down slowly and I would try and set the hook. Then I would get a small run and the float would come slowly back up. This went on for a while and the bait never really got smashed. When I would bring it back up usually the heads would be chewed up. I've seen quite a few cuttlefish caught at this spot so I think they may be the culprits. I was wondering if there is a rig I can use for livies that could catch squid / cuttlefish? I've seen a few guys use squid spikes through the bait. Thanks
  8. I also fish the Georges a bit myself and have found it very quite lately. You could also try other spots. I headed to the coast this morning and it was tops. Lots of fish about. It's a longer track to the spot but well worth it.
  9. Awesome little adventure there. Glad you got the rod and fish in.
  10. Hey Matt, Those fish that were jumping were most likely mullet, there everywhere in the Georges. To catch them, use a very small hook with a small piece of bread (about as big as your fingernail) under a float with no sinker. Berley up with some squished up soaked bread and throw your line out in the berley trail.
  11. What a bloody monster . Terrific catch mate.
  12. Cheers thanks Jenno. Sorry Koalaboi, I'm not the right Damos.
  13. I have just got my hands on my brothers yabbie pump and was wondering if there any spots near Revesby to pump for nippers. I know that you can get them apparently near Captain Cooks bridge but was wondering if there were any spots closer to home. Thanks, Damian
  14. No worries Sans. For bait the best to use would be live bait such as poddies (small mullet). To catch them use a small bait trap. Theres quite a few threads on this site about building them and how to use them. You can also catch them with a float and bread. If you don't want to use poddies or can't catch them (which often happens to me) you can also use chicken breast and steak strips. This bait tends to stay on longer and doesn't get taken as quick from all the little pickers like prawns do. I've got bream and whiting using this bait. Cheers, Damian
  15. I've used a couple of home made traps with mixed results. One coke bottle with the top cut off and turned in and also a orange juice bottle with a hole cut in the side. Can't seem to get them in there lately and was wondering which one you get the good results from and if there is a certain time of day you go to get them etc? Thanks, Damian
  16. Cheers thanks for the info.
  17. Hey Sans, A few spots I head to are Illawong. This spot is great as you can park right next 2 the spot. Either fish at the end of Old Ferry Road or go around the roundabout and take your first left into the car park and there are a couple of platforms to cast off. I've always had more success here fishing the run out tide from midday onwards. Another is Lugarno. Head right to the end Forest Rd and there is a boardwalk there to cast off. I've also tried Oatley Point but you have to cast off a little high so may not be the safest. Cheers, Damian
  18. Nice work there on the flatties. I see from your previous reports that you usually use poddies. I was wondering how you catch them? Do you use a trap or bait jig? Cheers, Damian
  19. Hey all, I went down the national park and was going to try Otford off the rocks. Parked at the top on the main road but didn't know how to get down to the rocks. Has anyone been there before and could tell me where the path is and how long it takes to get down? Ended up going over to Coalcliff which wasn't to bad, although a bit of a crowd. Thanks, Damian

    Kelso Weed

I'm trying to have a go at blackfishing as I've caught a few on bread while trying to catch poddies. I heard there was some weed at Kelso park quite a few times on the site but couldn't locate any there. Anyone want to give me some hints as where to look? Thanks, Damos
  21. Well thought I would put up my first post on actually catching something. Was fishing today around lunch at Illawong. Didn't expect to catch too much as it was a few hours from the tide going out but thought I'd give it a go anyway. Only had some beef strips and also put out a homemade poddy trap. Caught a couple of just under size bream and when I checked my trap, no poddies but it had about 10 baby prawns in there. So I thought to myself, why not put on a tiny hook and sinker and see how they go. Second one out lands a 34cm whiting, woohoo . Had some close calls on the others but only a few undersize whiting. So it looks like whiting on the menu tonight. All in all, I was pretty chuffed. Cheers, Damos
  22. You would have to scan them in and save them as a JPEG. Or if you have a good enough scanner with the right attachment, you can actually scan the negatives straight in.
  23. Thanks for the replies. Well I tried it but didn't have much luck. Heaps of poddies but couldn't get any in my little trap or on a jig, they were just too shy. Maybe it was too hot for them, was too hot for me. I headed down to the right of the boat ramp all the way to the end, is that a good spot? It looked like a good spot.
  24. I was wondering if anyone knew where abouts the needles is located at Woronora?
