  1. Hi All, Had an issue with the outboard stalling yesterday. I must say before i write more that the engine is overdue for a service but i cant afford it at the moment. I will do it as soon as i get some cashola together. When i started the engine, pull start by the way, it would idle for a while then stall. This happened for a few times and i put it down to being cold. I drove from Drummoyne to Balmoral and it happened again but this time when it was in gear and going very slowly. So its obviously nothing to do with the warmth of the engine. All day i had issues with starting it as i needed to put give the tiller steer a fair bit of juice or else it would kick over and stall in rapid succession. Also if i reduced the throttle as much as it could to change it into gear it would stall not allowing me to get into drive and move anywhere. I had to put it into forward gear with the revs up slightly which cant be good for the engine. Now here comes the strange part. I got home and parked it in the driveway and hooked up the flusher. It ran beautifully and didnt stall???? Weird. Does anyone have any idea whats going on? I checked the bulb and fuel was being fed fine, there was plenty of petrol... Also the motor is about 5 months old so its not broken i hope. Its a 3 clylinder 2 Stroke merc 40Hp. I think it has 3 cylinders anyway. I appreciate any help. Cheers Mike.
  2. Hey All, Ventured into the harbour yesterday solo at about 7am. Went straight from Drummoyne to Balmoral to get some yakkas and they were everywhere. Whilst i was catching them i watched a king cruise in and smash up a few of them. I quickly wacked a livie on a decent rod and cast it into slightly deeper water. About 5 minutes later i was on. Got him into the boat and he measured up at 60cm. Back in for him. Anyway caught some more yakkas and headed over to Clark island wreck. Stayed for about an hour for sweet FA. Ventured back to a place i have had good luck with and dropped down two livies. For the first time the kings hit my decent rod but this one smoked me big time. I was fishing with 50 pound braid with the drag up tight but he wanted to go and i wasnt stopping him. Dissapointed i put another on and about 30 minutes later another hit. This one was again boated but frustratingly measured 60cm again. I must say that i havent caught a great amount of kings but i felt this day was a success even though i didnt get a legal. All of mine seem to be right on 60cm and no smaller or bigger. Very weird. After giving up on the king hunt i went and tried to catch some squid. Headed over towards Watsons Bay and the water was clear and there was obvious kelp beds around + no wind. First cast and i was onto one. Got him in and when i was trying to put him into the LBT he feel off the hook. I bent down to pick him up and he blasted ink straight into my face and all over the boat. Wasnt happy. I had pleasure when i dropped him down at Clark Island again and something bit his head off. Shame i didnt hook anything with him. Anyway a few pictures of one of the kingines plus what the inker did to my boat and a look at my home made LBT. By the way yesterday was i think some of the best conditions i have ever seen in the harbour. Cheers. Mike.
  3. Hodgey that looks like a sweet spot. Good job on the bream and flathead and even in such cold water. Cheers. Mike.
  4. Yeah thats what i figured. I will make sure i keep a 500ml bottle in the boat to measure up the right amount.
  5. Hi Pinkus, I was out the other night and could only catch yakkas that were similar size. I wacked em out live and whole but didnt get a touch. I have read that big baits equal big fish but i prefer to go with the theory that even a big fish will eat a small yakka. I will continue to use them live and not filleted even if they are that big(30cm) however i have no experience with butterflying or using fillets. I hope a big shark will scof down the big livie one day and hang on. My opinion would be to be using pretty decent gear if using a whole yakka that size as any fish that will eat it will give a good fight. Cheers. Mike.
  6. Hi Raiders, I have a question about my 40HP merc engine. Its only about 4 months old and i am not sure whether there is a leak issue. When i run it in the open water it runs great and even when i flush it out at home it runs very smooth but it may be leaking oil?? I noticed that the leaves in the corner of my yard, where the water pools from the flushing, had a oil slick around them. Now i have only just noticed this after flushing out many times so the oil on the ground could just be a build up over time but thought i would ask some advice. I do measure pretty carefully the right oil to petrol ratio, as its not oil injected, but could i do any damage putting too much oil in? I was using a mix of 25:1 for the run in and now its 50:1. I think i probably have a mixture of about 35/40:1 at the moment as i forgot to take the measuring thing to the servo last time i went out. Cheers for any help. Mike.
  7. Cheers for all the help. No Jon it wasnt on that rod. I have had a couple of kings smash my bream rod but none that have actually been netted. Hodgey thats a great link and i think i was pretty close to the mark where i should be threading the hook through. Does anyone know if sweep have a size limit and if kings eat these too? Cheers. Mike.
  8. Thanks for the comments. Sorry i should have mentioned that i use a 4/0 for my 20 pound gear and the 8/0 was with the heavier outfit. Even the 4/0 through the yakka made it look pretty sick. It was alive but only just.
  9. Hey Raiders, Thought i would post a quick report about yesterdays outing. Got the day off so decided to hit the harbour on my lonesome. I went straight to Balmoral and got some yakkas that went into the LBT. This was the first time that i had got yakkas that were actually a good size. The ones that i have caught in the past were massive, more like tailor, and i never caught anything using them. Anyway to cut a long story short i then went over to a spot i know and dropped down a few livies. I must say that after i had put a 8/0 through them they didnt look too healthy. I had one out on 20 pound line and another on 40 pound. I was flicking SP around on a light rod when i see my 24kg live fibre bend big time. It was just a short intense bend and by the time i had it out of the holder, nothing. Put another livie on and then my other rod goes off. Now this is a $130 combo penn rod/reel but it has caught all my kings. Seems any combo worth over $150 and the kings wont touch it. Anyway got it in and measured at 60cm. Still not a legal king for the tinny but it will come. Here is a picture. He absolutely decimated the yakka. Cheers. Mike.
  10. Thats a wicked looking yak. Nice flathead for her first.
  11. That is one massive beast.
  12. I just wanted to thank the moderators for finding a way to get the swap and sell forum back up and running. I really do think its one of the best parts of FR and i love looking through and considering some items and dreaming about other products there. Thanks again. Mike.
  13. Unless you are very good with mechanics and DIY i would be giving serious consideration to spending $5k on a boat of that size. I contemplated it a while back and decided on a tinny for many reasons but mostly the cost involved. Would it be an option to sell the tinny you have and invest that money too? To be honest if i were buying an engine around the 70HP like Huey suggests, which is what i would want with a half cab, i would be investing all my $5k into that. I have spent a shit load more cash on my boat since i got it and it was brand new!! If i had to also fix certain parts of the engine i would be even more broke than i am. Like i said make sure you know what you are doing and if not then make sure you get some that does to have a look. Cheers. Mike.
  14. How good is that tinny. Those tubes look the goods. I saw them in brickmans factory when i was out there last time. I dont suppose he had finished the SS rod holders that he was making? Cheers. Mike.
  15. What a joke of a match. That ref made about five or six massive decisions that were wrong. I am a Pompey supporter but hate seeing teams go through that dont deserve to. I hope Man U absolutely belt them in the final.
  16. Cheers Slinky. I think i might try and get my spare spool rigged up with some 10pound mono. Not sure how much will fit on a 2000 sized spool though....? i think Zephi started this post and for him i think you might try using mono or using a leader with your braid. Braid is the most visible underwater and may deter the squid from attacking your jig. Just a thought. Cheers. Mike.
  17. Are most people squidding with such heavy line (20pound)? i usually use 6 pd braid with a ten pound leader. i do get the odd snag and lose the odd jig and thought that too heavy and that would effect your squid catching ability just like smaller fish. Can anyone who catches a lot of squid confirm whether or not it affects the number caught? Cheers. Mike
  18. Thanks for your replies. John i tried that knot and cant do it. I will have another go as i think that must be the issue. My leader to main line knot must have been no good when it was breaking there. Cheers Mike.
  19. Recently i was fishing with my bream rod and something a bit weird was happening. The issue is that i have 6pound braid and then i tie that straight to 10 pound leader with a double uni and then the leader to jighead with a uni knot. Previously when i got a snag and i couldnt get it out and had to force it, the line would break where the braid and leader join. Last outting i was out i got a few snags, which i forced out, and the line snapped at the hook and left me with the rest of my leader. Is this usual or are my knots the issue? Please if any suggestions on knots to use make them easy!!! The uni knot is the only one i know. Cheers for help. Mike.
  20. Hi Cath. I just spoke to the brains behind the operation and she says the best thing to do with it is to make pate. She is a very demanding polish woman and says its her mothers recipe. Cream cheese, a little oil, finely chopped spring onion a bit of fresh dill(optional) and salt and pepper. Mash it all together and its great on toast or bread. She just told me that i MUST say take the bones and skin out. Good luck.
  21. Jewhunter going on your recent fishing spots, including your "backyard", if i died and was reincarnated i would want to be you. What a life. Great catches there too. The old 3 inch minnow eh? A personal favourite.
  22. Yeah no worries Byron. I am happy to take out a few raiders who dont have boats. I think more than three in the tinny would be pushing it though. They may be able to find more comfortable rides however and deny the tinny the oportunity to show them what she is made of. My only jew to date is about 35cm. Pathetic i know. I find that everytime i fish and even more so when you are around experienced fishos you learn something so thats gold. Jewgaffer if you bulid it, they will come. In other words set a date, preferably sat night/Sunday morning for me, and we shall do everything that we can to bring in a few jew. I want to get a new stradic 4000 soon so hopefully that will deal with a monster jew and if not then the live fibre with the tyrnos will do.
  23. Good news Tinnygirl. Should be some bargaining involved seeing that you are buying a fair amount of stuff. If i remember correctly you had a fair bit of stuff stolen. Maybe post some pictures of your new gear.
  24. Can you put that in English please? Its posts like that, that make me feel stupid.
  25. Sounds like a plan. I would be in but i think the drive out west could kill the yaris. Will have to set up camp in the harbour and hope for the best.
