  1. Best wishes Byron. I am sure you will heal quickly. My mate whinges horendously about his back everytime we go out in the tinny. I bet even with your crook back you wouldnt whine that much. Use the time to devise new and mysterious ways to catch a PB jew. Hope to hear from you soon. Mike.
  2. Like i said before i want to overdo it when i am installing rod holders. Now i am sure those are designed for snapper but its up to you. I know it may sound stupid but if two decent kings hit the DR at the same time i think that thing would bend but i havent seen it in the flesh. You need to try and get one of the king killers like dogtooth or cephalopod to havev a look.
  3. Hi FT, I asked a similar question yesterday about rod holders for kings. Those ones that you show look ok but i would want to overdo it not just be adequate. With the costs of some rods/reels going into the thousands i find it hard to believe people are so careless with the rod holders they use. Gary Bricknell is actually making up a number of rod holders that cephalopod has which i have put a link below for you to see. From reading on this site, that fella has lost not one but two stellas, even though by fluke he got them back. http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.ph...p;hl=rod+holder I think, from my research goes, that those are snapper racks and not great for the meter plus kings. I know some will argue about losening the drag and it will be ok but for some areas, like over a reef, you cant give them that much line or else it will be bye bye for your leader. It happened to me twice on Saturday and i was using 50pound leader which i dont consider too light. Others will be able to tell more. Cephalopod seems to be in the know so maybe he could shed some more light on the strength of these. Cheers Mike.
  4. Byron you continue to amaze me with your humour. Sounds like thgey might be the go. I have contacted brickman about making some of the ones that celephod(spelling??) has. Have you seen them? Otherwise is there anywhere to acquire you US made ones? Cheers. Mike.
  5. Thanks Byron for the pictures. Do you ever have any issues with them slipping when a king or jew hits them and the drag on you reels is set quite tight?
  6. I lost my license when i was a kid for 2 years and now i drive like a grandma most of the time. Shame about the fine. Never got into fishing off the rocks but i admire those that can do it. Sounds like there were plenty of fish caught. Good times.
  7. Anyone seen the holders i am talking about??? I am sure the post was on here. They arent the ones that celephod(i am sure the spelling is wrong please excuse) even though those ones are wicked. I am just a bit tight at the moment and those look a bit pricey.... Cheers Mike.
  8. I take heed of all of your advice. Yes i didnt use 5th or even 4th gear. Not sure if it even got into 3rd. The automatic has an option of using 1st and 2nd like a manual. It seems the braking ability is greatly enhanced when in these gears which is a definate plus. I made sure to keep a massive distance but at 5am there werent that many on the road. The way back was a different story. Those of you that know Victoria rd know what i mean. I will continue to keep it safe and not push the boundaries. I value my car and boat too much(life too).
  9. My flush mounted rod holders are decent stainless ones and i cant see them breaking however i am not sure whether this is the correct angle the rods should be at. I watched a charter pull in loads of kings and i believe that the holders they were using were a lot more horizontal than mine. Where we were fishing there is a wreck below not far below the surface so if the drag is set too light then you will get smoked, like i did twice on Saturday.
  10. Hi Again Raiders, A while back i saw some pictures of what looked like home made rod holders for kings. They looked really solid but simple. I think it was just a metal rod with a short metal cylinder on top. About 3 inches long. I guess the butt fits in there. I have read so many reports of rod holders being snapped by big kings. Now i am not saying that i catch big kings but there will be a day, hopefully soon, and i dont want to be let down by the rod holder breaking in half. Another thing is that i have 30 degree flush mounted holders but i have observed others having ones that almost sit horizontal or a little bit more vetical. Now when a king hits, these the rods in the flush mounted holders bend so much i think they are going to break and i almost fall out rushing over to it. I am sure there are better ones out there. If anyone knows the ones i am talking about or has better suggestions i am all ears. Cheers. Mike.
  11. I just wanted to thank all those people that have helped me out over the last few weeks with my boat and towing questions. Without this site i would be in deep poo. On Saturday morning i hooked it up to the little Yaris and off we went. Got to the ramp with no dramas at all. Police were there doing all the safety checks on the boats and breathalizers. Launch was sweet. Even nailed the reverse park in front of the boys in blue. Anyway to cut a long story short the fishing was slow. We only had bait shop bought pilchards and that was my biggest regret. We found a spot that i frequent and it was packed with two charters and a few others. The charters were both using fresh squid strips and were pulling in king after king whilst we were getting squat. I chucked out a 7 inch jerk shad and one of them gobbled it quick. Got it aboard and was only 60cm. Back in she went. Still havent cracked the 60cm king yet. That was the end of the kings hooked. Anyway i was worried all the time about pulling the boat up the ramp with the car. Got her back and hooked up, cranked it onto the trailer and then she was pulled up no worries. The ramp was wet and slimey but was all good. My next car will be a bit bigger but until then i am happy i now have a boat and a car capable of towing it. Thanks again to all those that helped out. Heres proof its not at the bottom of the river. Cheers Mike.
  12. I just checked what those reels are worth. I would not be a happy chappy. Sounds like the fish were good though.
  13. Thanks guys. Will give it a go. Yes will need a hole saw as the bilge is a 1100gph rule pump and the diameter of tubing needs to be 1 1/8 inch(think thats right) so the hole in the floor needs to be reasonably large. I bought a new hole saw kit the other day and it cut through aluminium (the hole in the side for the water to go out) like butter.
  14. Hi Raiders, I am about to spend the day working on my tinny and one thing i need to do is to dill a hole in the back floor as to pass the tubing through for my bilge pump. I have read that when you try and drill marine carpet it gets stuck around the drill bit. I can obvioulsy turn the ply over and drill through the wood but eventually i will hit the carpet. Do i just keep drilling or is there a better method for ending up with clean round drill holes???? Thanks in advace. Mike.
  15. Sorry if i gave you a bum steer but i was talking about live baiting with dogtooth not trolling. I assumed that they would be the same but obviously not. I agree that the lighter the better but if the $$$$ are stacking up from lost lures you will definately want to go heavier than you are using.
  16. 20 pound will be ok for the smaller kings. If you want good advice on catching kings maybe try and contact dogtooth. He is a meter king killer. He told me to use 80 pound as my main line if i want one of the big ones.
  17. That is a awesome king. Nice one. Out of curiosity is that your all round white light in the background of that pic?
  18. Hi All, I am not trying to gate crash Roberta's post as i think its such a good idea but thought people had time to reply to both, maybe. Was wondering if anyone had ever caught one of these. Not sure of the proper name but they were called Titan fish when we were scuba diving. They actually ram you and you have to protect yourself with your fins if you swim near them and they are very aggressive. Thought they would put up a decent fight if on a line. We saw them in Malaysia and Indonesia but they may exist up the coast. Heres a picture i took.
  19. No offence meant but i HEARD that tailor heads are not much good for jews. I know that jewfish have been know to eat them. Only repeating what others have told me. Its makes sense really. Would you eat a cow head when a lovely fillet steak is being offered?
  20. I am no engineer but what about if you made the section that holds onto the rail a lot longer and perhaps contained three or so bolts. I presume that the more surface area that attaches to the rail the less movement will occur and the better the grip. It would obviously take longer to move should you need to but it may work??? I think i must underestimate the power of what big fish can do. I would have thought that baby would only be moved by a blue fin or equally powerful fish. Another idea is to drill holes into your rail and feed the bolt somehow through the hole. You would need to drill a hole through the back of the brace and fit another small bolt through there. You could even have a few holes for different angles. Am i talking rubbish? Brickman the all round lightyou made for me goes in tomorrow. Will post a pic to you to show how it looks. I think i might have left the rubber water stopper from the light in your factory. Well done on more great work. Mike.
  21. Mrs SFM, That is a beast of a fish. I really think that bream give a great fight for their size but for some reason i always find myself putting them back. I find them such a great fish to look at as well as catch. Roberta what a great post. It would be nice if people (should they know) elaborate on the line class as well as some these days fish with incredibly light lines. Cheers. Mike.
  22. Jewgaffer i think your mates belly makes his bream look smaller. I think in reality they are about equal. I hope i have a beer gut like that in a few years. I have begun to work on it already.
  23. Grant i thought i might try it first but the only time i have used it i launched at low tide and had to drag the boat through about 100m of mud. That was the boats first time in water, or do i mean mud. I didnt bother checking the tides as at the ramps i have ever been to it didnt really matter especially in a boat as small as mine. Cheers for all the replies Mike.
  24. I actually do have someone to accompany me and he is a bit of a weapon. I am glad that he will be holding the boat whilst i park the car. I hope it doesnt come to that though.
  25. Jesus!!! Well as some of you might have read my maiden towing experience (in a Yaris too) will be this Saturday morning and i would really rather not to be having to deal with all of that trouble. If anyone can suggest an alternative ramp then i would be most appreciative. GregL seems to think its all pretty funny but as a beginner tower i think my stress levels will be high enough. Cheers Guys/Girls. Mike.
