I am organising an MROCP course for raider members.

At this stage I am proposing a Sat and Sunday - theory and the following Sat or Sun morning for the exam. Please post here an expression of interest so I can gauge numbers and if I need to run a few courses.

Cheers

Hi Donna. Why does it take so long? I was given a handout from marine rescue last weekend who offer the course including exam 8am to 2pm

Depends what level of licence you want, how much instruction you want etc.

I did mine through Botany Marine Rescue, Wednesday nights 2 hours at a time over several weeks.

8am - 2pm, is 6 hours. Not everyone can keep their concentration levels up for that long straight. Some people need a break between learning and an exam.

They need to be able to study the information and absorb it etc, etc.

That is right Ian!

Steve I think you are referring to the MROVCP which is commonly run over 6 hours. The content in the MROCP is about 10 hours worth of theory. There is no RTO that would not separate the sessions into small ones. There is a lot to learn and it is challenging.

I have organised several of these over the years and put through about 100 raiders, including myself!! Cat-As-Trophy and myself are the only lady raiders that have it.

The reason we did it over a weekend was that it was easier to do two days of 5 hours and then sit the exam after a week to go over it and learn it ready for the exam. It can be delivered in 2 hour sessions over 5 nights or in any other way as long as 10 hours are covered.

The AMC has strict rules about how the course is conducted and run. Invigilators have to ensure exam is run etc etc

Those raiders that attended enjoyed being with other raiders and we had a break for lunch and afternoon tea etc

Thanks for the advice Ian.

Hi Donna. Your spot on. I've Re read and it is the MROVCP flyer I was given.

As long as the dates work I'd like to be included please

What is the cost ?

Cost is variable depends on who delivers it. I will get better prices with a group.

The AMC (Australian Marine College) sets the costs for the handbook - $39 and the cost of the exam paper and certification, marking - $74

An invigilator has to run the exam.

Venue, AV and catering has to be factored in (not too much more)

I will give all details asap

Hi Mrsswordie. I am very keen to do a qualifying course (as per some earlier post) depending on date/work commitments. Was there any reason why the MROCP course was selected vs MROVCP. The MROVCP is the "lighter course" focused on VHF which would suit most non commercial boaties?

We could run both depending on who wants what. The MROVCP is the basics on using the radio. The other is an advanced course for those that already are familiar. Have a look online at what is covered. I have made contact with the trainers and invigilator and hope to report back soon with some options.

Thanks I will keep an eye on this post. When I looked at this previously the MROCP covered VHF and HF operation - so the operator was certified for land based base station operation, also commercial work eg tug boat operation etc. I just require recreational fisho VHF use so the lighter the workload the better ( more time for fishing !). Thanks again.

If it is an MROCVP that you want then I suggest you just go do that yourself at one of the public courses held. They are on Saturdays 8 till 2pm (see below)

http://www.marinerescuensw.com.au/navigation-course-dates zmk1962 contact me on pm and I will give you details of one that is on Sat and trainer could squeeze you in.

Most places do not recommend the MROVCP because if you want to upgrade to MROCP it is not possible ie: you have to do the whole thing again. You may want to upgrade even to join a volunteer marine rescue group for instance and you need the MROCP. Both courses cost the same. Why not do the full one - I have done it and if I can do it then anyone can!!!

The course I am organising is a MROCP - I spoke with the trainers this morning and they are trying to organise a special course just for raiders that will be condensed (less time) because most of us have some prior knowledge. It will run over a weekend.

Could ONLY people that want to do MROCP post in here. I just thought it would be a good opportunity for raiders to network and socialise face to face.

Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency (MROCP)

A candidate will be required to:

  • Demonstrate a practical knowledge of GMDSS sub-systems and equipment which is appropriate to vessels operating in Australian waters on which a radio installation is not compulsory under international agreements. Specifically, MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony equipment with digital selective calling (DSC) facilities, and emergency position indicating radio beacons of the 406 MHz and 121.5/243 MHz type
  • Demonstrate an ability to use MF/HF and VHF radiotelephony and digital selective calling (DSC) operating procedures, particularly those relating to distress, urgency and safety
  • Demonstrate an understanding of simple maintenance practices required to keep the marine radio equipment specified in (1) in good working order, including the repair of minor faults
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the regulations applicable to ship stations equipped with radiotelephony and digital selective calling facilities
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the Australian marine search and rescue system

Totally agree Donna, and is exactly why I did the full course

OK all, it is difficult to arrange for a fishraider only class.

I have been negotiating with Marine Rescue Port Hacking and they sent me a listing of public courses

There is a MROVCP course on 14 Feb 2015 8am to 2pm

There is a MROCP course on 21 - 22 Feb 2015 8am to 4pm

The courses are held at Cronulla Training Centre 202 Nicholson Parade, South Cronulla

To book into these courses contact John 0438 782 722 and make sure you say you are a fishraider. There are only about 30 places so get in asap. Costs will include the licence, exam fee and book and John will advise on cost.

Changes next year: the MROVCP is no longer an "open book" exam from 1st Jan 2015 - it will be a "closed book" exam
