Pyrmont Luderick

Long time lurker, first time poster.

After endless frustration with surf fishing conditions I decided to change things up today. Inspired by the reports in this forum I decided to do something I haven't done in nearly 40 years - chase luderick. As a kid growing up on the central coast I spent many hours float fishing for blackfish from the old Gosford railway bridge but hadn't pursued it since. My fishing mate collected weed from a location he knows on the northern beaches and I read Fishraider posts and studied a few YouTube videos. Armed with weed, ambition and the best luderick advice the internet can provide we set out this morning. We selected a location in the Pyrmont area where I'd seen some obviously experienced fishos chasing blackfish as I walked by one lunchtime a few weeks ago (I work nearby so always try and study who is chasing what in the local area). The result was better than I could have expected. Landed four (29cm, 31cm, 33cm and 41cm) and dropped two. Kept one for the table and sent the other three back. Pretty stoked and happy to join the brotherhood of the blackfish. I don't think it'll take another 40 years for my next outing.

great pic of the luderick there!

I love the technique of finding a promising location by spotting the greybeards in action.

like they say......we've got 2 eyes and one mouth............use them accordingly

It was an educational way to spend a lunch hour. They were fishing a spot I would have said was more likely to produce bream with no obvious signs of any weed or cabbage on the structure. But sure enough they were fishing with weed and using it as burley so I decided to sit nearby and watch. Not too long afterwards a rod bent and up came a decent sized luderick in a landing net. I walked over to say hello and have a bit of chat and watched as they brought up the keeper net with at least half a dozen good fish. Lesson learned. I still think the spot would hold decent bream, but now I know for sure it definitely holds luderick.

Feels good to get back into it after a 40year break doesn't it!

It felt amazing! Like rediscovering something precious you thought you'd lost. The thrill of seeing the float go down, waiting then striking, feeling the weight pulling against you and knowing you've hooked up. Magic.

I started my fishing career on "blackies" (can say that - Gundungurra mob") but haven't chased them for 30 years also, but love float fishing for live bait when the yakkas and slimies are on the surface, so I might give it a go.

As I mostly fish out of a boat now I guess there should be more spots available than shore based?

well done - the flame has been rekindled.

Welcome to posting on Fishraider drc. Good on you for "biting the bullet" and managing to get among them after such a lengthy lay off. Great that you only took what you needed and let the others go too. Cheers, BN

Glad to finally be a contributor. It feels good to get back on the horse for sure. I really only took up the rod again late last year with my main action to date being estuary flathead and beach whiting along Sydney's northern beaches. The "trouble" with re-kindling the old passion is that it fires my ambition for all of the species I'd like to chase. Being land based limits my options somewhat but I'd love to get among the snapper, chase drummer from the rocks, and tangle with monster jewfish and kings. I expect investment in a fishing kayak will be next. My target list is considerable and spare time isn't exactly abundant. Still, it's an enjoyable problem to have!

Well done mate. They are a lot of fun to catch. They always put up a good fight as you would know with that 41cm.

It can be very easy and comfortable fishing in calm waters. I had some fresh crumbed fillets last night and they tasted great.

Cheers Steve.

Mate you can get all the fish you want (except maybe reef species) land-based, you just have to work harder for them!

Well done on the blackfish. I'm stinging to get out there for a blackie session. I haven't fished for them since early February and every luderick report that comes in fires me up!

True enough! I'm thinking my next target will be drummer over Easter (provided the seas finally settle down). Just need to heavy up my gear a little and find a good spot to collect cabbage on the northern beaches.
