More from the beach

A friend of one of my daughters has just flown over to stay with us for a couple of weeks from Darwin. Its a bit of a temperature shock for him having come from an average mid winter temp of 32'c down to our cooler southern temps.

First introduction yesterday was to a little lure flicking for beach salmon. Tackle for him was a 1000 spin reel with 6lb braid and 10lb mono leaders (don't want to make it easy for him!!). My son used his usual spin outfit he tends to use for everything from salmon, tailor and gummies etc.

They had only picked around four fish each walking and flicking lures until we came to a good gutter which was literally loaded with fish. From here on it was fish every cast, often with dozens trying to smash the lure from hooked fishes mouths. We started off trying to keep count but gave up when they got over 20 fish each. Salmon are such great little fighters, when I first moved down here to the south coast I fished for them almost everyday.

Today would of been a good day to of gotten them offshore but they enjoyed the salmon so much they are back up the beach again now hooking into them again, I stayed home in the warm!!!

My eldest daughter is out wide around the offshore seamounts with clients chasing bluefin and yellowfin tuna. Yesterday having a five way hookup with bluefin on lures, landing four and loosing one.  The first run of bluefin are small, normally in the 40-50kg range which I much prefer. The bigs ones will soon be here too.

That’s a great looking bit of water & photos

I was fully expecting the N.T. fella to be wearing trackies & a beanie but then again fighting 20+ good sized salmon on the light gear would certainly keep you warm 👍

Just be aware that down here most beaches within marine park sanctuaries can be fished from the shore. On the zoning maps they normally have a yellow section like this. It's also worth checking for the latest details in regards to the sanctuary zones as several have now been removed completely and more will gone in the near future. It's hard to keep track of at times and you are better off getting info from fisheries than tackle stores.

Some nice sized sambos and lovely photos Jon. We're starting to see numbers up here, but smaller fish than what you're getting.

I like the look of the rod your young fella is using in the first pic.

May I ask what rod it is and what you reckon the ideal lure weight would be?

It's a Daiwa saltist coastal 802 which is rated 14-50g, he sticks with 40g halco twisties. This is the same rod he caught his 9.4kg tailor on and numerous gummies etc with. It's a lovely rod to cast and use, I would like one myself but already have to much gear to sneak another rod into the house.

Hi Jon. Does that mean that some areas that were made sanctuaries have reverted back to non - sanctuary areas? I always imagined that Fisheries would be making more and more "no fishing zones" rather than removing some of them. What changes occur to permit Fisheries to reverse a zone? Cheers, bn

Yes that's correct, removed and more to go in the near future https://www.theland.com.au/story/6539837/fishing-on-the-hook-in-south-coast-marine-park/
