Amilyo
Hey guys I’m new to fishraider, I’m a novice ish fisherman, I’ve put in countless hours in the last two years but can’t seem to catch anything bigger than 40cm once in a blue moon. Can someone point me in the right direction of some good land based spots, I’ve tried everything from all types of baits, to different hook sizes and hook types but can’t seem to get anything that puts on a decent fight. Any help is greatly appreciated!
XD351
Hi Amilyo , We can narrow your search down a little by answering a couple of simple questions . Ok so first off are you looking for fresh or salt water spots ? If you are looking for salt water spots would it be rock, beach or estuary? Is there a specific waterway you prefer to fish - maybe it is one that is local to you ? Once we get that Lot sorted then we can look at things like species of fish you are wanting to catch etc. Edited January 5, 2023 by XD351 Spelling -I’ve been a bad boy again 😱
Koalaboi
Hi Amilyo, XD351’s advice is on the money. Where do you live? Do you have a car? I reckon it’s best to find spots that are as handy to home as you can so that going for a fish is not too big a mission, especially at the start as fishless trips that required a huge effort can be too discouraging. Better to be able to get out as often and as easily as possible. Secondly you mention size as a consideration. A 40 cm blackfish or bream is a very good fish whilst the same size kingfish is not even legal. So XD351’s question on target species is relevant. For what it’s worth, I reckon start your fishing with bait fishing light for species like bream, luderick, flathead etc. The gear is not too expensive and if you gather your own bait you will learn a whole lot about fishing basics that will stand in good stead if you decide to target other fish requiring specialist gear etc. Over time you will work out what to fish for, what bait to use and where to go depending on the winds, tides and season etc. Good luck. If you spend time looking through posts on this forum, you will see plenty of spots reported by members that regularly produce fish. Find some close to home and get out there! Pickles
Hi @Amilyo, I’ve sent you reply of two good spots to try land based for Bass (as requested). You’ll find Raiders very helpful and sharing, but remember “He who waters will himself be watered” (pr 11:25), in other words “what gos around, comes around”, so respond in kind, be willing to share costs and share with others and recognise their help. @XD351, @Koalaboi and @noelm have given excellent advice. In my experience it is important to do the research on the species and the area (contact local tackle shops) and put in the hours. It took me quite a few years to catch my first kingfish, now I am relatively successful (last trip I boated 12 Kingies). BUT ENSURE YOU ADHERE TO THE SIZE AND BAG LIMITS and don’t be tempted to keep “almost legal” fish. Last year I boated 980 kingfish and released over 900 - many of them 63 - 64cm. I always make it clear to anyone I take out that we won’t be keeping more than 3 kingfish each and the bag limit is 5. Let me know if I can help further. noelm
You will find it's not about secret spots, so much as technique and persistence, what secret spot fishes well today, might be bare tomorrow. Try to learn a bit about your target species, where they live, what they eat and how they find their food! Look for places that fit that description, just turning up to a place, with 15kg line, a kilo sinker and a packet of frozen Prawns or Squid for bait, then hurling the rig out over the horizon will not get you consistent catches of quality fish (in my opinion) watching videos can teach you some basics, but actually doing it will teach you more in 15 minutes, than 10 movies (once again...in my opinion)
Amilyo
Thanks everyone for your replies, I live in western Sydney and frequent places like darling harbour, Clifton gardens, la perouse. Honestly distance isn’t an issue, I’ve started catching yakkas to use as live bait and if not getting anywhere I freeze a few with salt to use as bait on my next trip. My brother in law has just come from Sweden and loves fishing also l. He’s used to catching rainbow trout over there so maybe some areas that have this species as he would be familiar with techniques. I hope I’ve answered some of the questions, I’ve purchased a few rods, some with lighter line and others more heavy duty.
XD351
Surprised you are not getting anything decent from Clifton gardens ! Well if you want something that puts up a decent fight you would be targeting Kingfish ,Mulloway and salmon . From what I have seen and heard there are plenty of small to medium Mulloway in the harbour right now and flathead just about everywhere . Here is a video of Shroom catching some Mulloway in the area on the map - he is fishing off one of the wharves marked , I have marked a few spots also worth trying but more importantly look at his rig and how he baits up - maybe you can learn something from this video and a few others he has made in the are . Kingfish and salmon can turn up just about anywhere from this area right around through middle harbour and up to Roseville - you never know when or where as they are constantly moving . 4

Trout being a cooler climate freshwater fish, you'll need to travel about 2 hours from Sydney. If you are interested pm me and I can put you on to some good spots in the Blue Mountains. XD351
My mistake , Shroom is fishing at Rhodes / Meadowbank area not Balmain but in the long run it doesn’t matter as he has caught the same fish further down river in his recent videos .
