  1. Hi raiders, long time.. no posts. I just recently got my P's, and so this summer holidays(thinking early January)me and a couple fishing mates who i've been close with since I was 4 years old are heading off for a fishing/camping road trip, and were wondering if any of you guys had a couple suggestions? There will be 3 of us, and we'll be taking a couple kayaks on top the car so we can get out in the water if we need to. We were thinking Depot beach, any opinions? How's the camping facilities/fishing grounds around that area? We are in Sydney, and to be honest I think in terms of distance, that's about as far North/South as we'd be willing to drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, James
  2. hey mate, i used to live in gladesville not too far from banjo. i have a tinny that me and a mate used to take out every weekend and it was very common for us to see bullsharks on the water, usually just the fin cruisin by but just a couple of months ago we saw a shark come out of the water to take a sea gull off the surface, so therye definatly there. hope this helps, James
  3. Hi guys, Late notice i know, but i'm going for a fish tomorow in pittwater with my dad and grandpa trying to target a few bread and butter fish like bream, flathead, whiting etc. My issue is that im not sure where the best bet would be? I am very confident catching kings in pittwater, but have never really targeted bream or flathead? We will be using mainly pilchards and perhaps get a few nippers or livies. If anybody has any suggestions as to where we should be fishing it would be greatly appreciated. I'd much prefer be catching something than just sitting out on the water with dad and grandpa, bored to tears.. Thanks heaps guys, James
  4. Thanks silvo it was an absolute pleasure fishing with you and Graham on Tanoa, I already can't wait for our next trip out! To finish the rest of the story we hooked up onto a marlin at about 9am, Graham and Silvo called it for a stripey immediatly, of course that didn't mean much to me at the time, but after 90 minutes of grueling pain and sweating it out in the heat (i'd been lying down and was wearing trackies and a hoodie and of course had no time to strip down before hooking into the harness and gimble) I landed my first ever Marlin! Being short of crew I had to do the honours of tagging my own fish while Silvo held the leader, at the side of the boat it was measured to be just over 2.5m long, and weighed around 110kg's, apparantly this is a good size for a striper off Sydney After that I was up for a sleep! so after napping for two hours myself and Silvo found ourselves bringing in an array of striped tuna. Just as we were about to head in for the day we got another hook up! This time it was Silvo on strike, and he played the striped marlin, around 70-80kgs, for about 25 minutes. I was extremely fortunate to get the tag into the fish, as I had to reach down deep to manage to pin him just above the shoulder before it was brought to the side of the boat. This was lucky because as the marlin took its next run, the leader snapped and he was off to freedom once again. By the time we'd made it back we'd tagged two marlin, and sighted a few more. O think it's safe to say that i'm now hooked on gamefishing! i'm still stoked to this day, and now i've got eternal bragging rights with all my mates, thanks again guys for an amazing day out. Now that you've shown me the ropes of game fishing i'll be able to be much more helpful on deck next time! cheers James
  5. jesus! that's absolutely hugggee!! cheers James
  6. hahaha yeah im not sure if it's true either, but either way i absolutely love it cheers James
  7. Shimano Raider. They are great rods and are usually priced between 150 and about 180 mark. Great value for money.
  8. Yeah that's right, i heard that its ok to eat the fish out of the river now, and i know a few people that do it, but im not that keen. I'm more than happy just to release them anyway, ive always just targeted fish in the parra for the sport, not the feed. I think things might change when i move up to pittwater though
  9. Hi guys, We are in the middle of moving house to Newport at the moment, we move in just after the new year, so i havent really had much time to go fishing in the last few months. I decided to head out this morning with a friend of mine in search of some bream, but of course all my gear was in storage except for my little flickstick. We decided that bread would be the best option, as we'd never used it before and were keen to give it a try. Hit the water at 6am and arriving at the first spot, armed with 3 loaves of bread, got into it straight away. a small bit out for berley and almost straight away there were swirls at the back of the boat. Floated some bread down the trail and immediatly we get a double hook up, pull in two nice bream 31 and 32cm. Continued to do this for an hour or so, landing about 7 bream each, all between 31 and 34cm. Then decided to try the marina at cabarita, same again berleying bread then floating some unweighted bread on a tiny green hook. Yet again we had amazing results. The two of us managed another 15 bream in the next hour and a half, all between 32 and 38cm. Wow we thought, this bread works really well! We decided to call it a day soon after, more than happy with our catch. Final tally was 29 bream and 15 mullet, all released. I'd say that we had a better trip today on bread than ive ever had on the plastics in the Parra. Sorry theres no pics, i wasnt really expecting a great deal to come out of today, but boy was i wrong. Things are really heating up in the Parra now, i will miss that waterway when i move, but at least then i'll have Pittwater to target some nice kings instead Cheers James
  10. Hi guys, was checking up on a few other fishing forums this morning and came across a report from a kayak fishing forum of a bloke's hairy trip to longy this morning. He was out with his mates in their kayaks getting into some rats, when one guy yelled out that there was a shark. Turned out to be a massive Great White, they all had to raft up and just sit there bobbing around for about 10 minutes while the shark circled. One of the yakkers estimated the shark to be well over 4.5m in length Apparantly the shark wasn't being aggressive, more just having a curious look, but gee wouldn't you be packing it when you got a shark longer than your kayak circling you more than 2k offshore. Makes me appreciate my 560 Quinnie that little bit more Cheers James
  11. holy jesus, they are two of the biggest bream ive seen in a long time. thats absolutely insane! wanna take me fishing? James
  12. Hi guys, i got a Shimano Sedona 4000 with some 25 pound sunline on it and i was just wondering if anybody could give me some recommendations on a rod to match it to? I have a budget of about 100-120 bucks and might be able to stretch it to 130ish at the most. Any help would be much appreciated, as im keen to start getting into the harbour/pittwater kings ASAP. Cheers, James
  13. Hi raiders, Im thinkin about heading out to Longy this sunday with a friend in his tandem kayak, weather looks nice, we figured 'why not'. I just wanted to know whats happening out there at the moment? ive read a couple of reports of rats being taken, but wanted to know if that's consistent, and also whether theres any legal kings lurking too. If there are kings out there, would any raiders be able to give me some advice on targetting these kings? I probably wont have access to livies, and fishing out of a kayak i wont have a heap of room for gear, so i was thinking taking a medium flickstick (6-10kg rod and 4000 Sedona) and something else. Hints and tips are much appreciated guys Cheers James
  14. that's an absolute thumper trevally for the harbour!! cheers James
  15. Hi guys, I'm heading down to Jervis Bay this weekend with a mate, and we are keen to get into some fishing. I got a 560 Quinnie spirit, and am stayin in Vincentia, was just wondering if anybody would be able to give me some tips on what to target, and the best way of doing so? I know there's monster kings down there, but i got no idea how to target them, and id also like to get into a few other species as well. All help and advice is much appreciated. Cheers James
  16. well done mate, looks like you had a great time. i just want to know, is everybody going soft? what happened to the days when all you had was bait, the smell never bothered anybody then? now some people dont even use Gulp because they find it too 'smelly'. Come on guys, lets toughen up a little bit Cheers, James
  17. would you be ok at long reef without one? cheers James
  18. wow mate that's awesome, hopefully the kings stay up our end of the river cheers James
  19. Hi guys, We are thinking of heading out tomorow and tryin around the Sydney Heads area. Are the salmon still firing around there? Is there anything to be caught? We will be in a 560 Quinnie Spirit called Bayeswater II, don't be afraid to come and say hello if you're out at the same time as us. Cheers, James
  20. I'd go the daiwa gear, purely for the saltist. Brilliant reel, can't go wrong with it. Cheers James
  21. mate i don't even use reel oil, i just give mine a good wash with freshwater and then after they have dried i take them apart and give them a good squirt with WD-40. I've had the same 2 reels for over 2 years now, and they get a serious workout, and plenty of salt exposure when i head out, as i often like to fish from a friends kayak, or my small tinny. Cheers, James
  22. sounds absolutely brilliant mate. cheers James
