  1. At the waterfall. There are pools above it with bass, But I am going back 30 years !!!! The creek in front of the Crosslands boat ramp has a pool at the end , have caught Flathead there. Howard.
  2. Rated to 10 kg. Regards Howard.
  3. I have stradic fa, fb, fk and Daiwa Aegis on my 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 rods, the ci4+1000 fb is the lightest but the 2006 Aegis feels so good. But the tournament drag is a pain, so many turns to get some decent drag. And a max of only 2 kg. Stradic FK 195 grams, if it is too heavy then the fb at 160 gram is your best choice. Luvias 2004 is 175 grams ? Howard.
  4. I fish almost exclusively for Flathead on lures. I use 4 lb leader With about 30 c/m of 12 lb tied as a bite trace on the end. I use 4 or 6 lb leader to cast further. It probably reduces the bream by catch, but the Jew by catch is covered !!! I was fishing with the local Guide last week, and he uses 8 lb leader with no problems. We caught over 12 flathead that day without loosing any to bite offs. We were using 1 to 3 and 2 to 4 kg rods with a firm drag. Not too tight so the fish could run a bit ! Howard.

    Jew Rod

I need a Jew rod, 7'. single handed. Cast weight up to 45 grams, 1 1/2 0z. 6 to 8 kg . And light weight. The only one I can find is a Veritas. 3. Any comments on this rod? Thanks Howard.
  7. The angle of the eye to the shank is deliberate. The eye of the hook and the point of the hook are parallel for a reason.! A straight eye would need a different point design. So a different hook Design.
  8. A lot of these are a re Named , Modified Suicide hook.. I have been using this hook for 60 years for bait fishing, NOT snelled. They are designed NOT to snell. The eye is in line with the point when pulled. Super effective. Hence the name !! Not good For catch and release. These days I use Black Magic KL circle hooks, especially with grandkids. Super effective, but don't strike!! let the fish swim away and the hook will lock into it's jaw!! Some say these are better snelled, but I don't bother !! Howard.
  9. Estuary Cod, Regards Howard.
  10. If you want light weight, Wilson live fibre rod, Shimano Ultegra ci4+ 5500 surf reel. Howard.
  11. These look very impressive, but I haven't seen any comments about them. Anyone using them? thanks Howard.
  12. I buy books designed to de ganged with open eyes, and I use a swivel between each hook. Prevents the fish from getting leverage and throwing the hooks. Especially Salmon. Howard.
  13. I have had an XI5 for 2 years now, no issues, Has changed the way I fish with Anchor Lock. Could not be without it. Howard.
  14. I have talked about scent a lot in the past. Scent adds smell and taste to any lure. If they smell it , they will chase it, if they taste it , they will hang on to it, giving you a longer window to strike and hook up. To me there is no question as to whether it works. I started using scent many years ago. Spray on stuff and Dizzy's wax. Then s factor came with the SP'S . It was good, then it in tubes. Even Better. One day I fished with a guide and he kept putting scent on, I found out later it was Sax Scent. My wife won't put a lure in the water without it! I have 2 tubes for her up the front of the boat and 3 for me down the back.2x Crab,2x Bloodworm and 1 Wassabi for Bass in fresh water. We apply it after every dozen casts, and it is uncanny how many fish are caught in the first couple of casts after re applying.I also use it on lures off the beach, Soft vibes and Metal vibes. Sax Scent is my favourite, By far. Have even been known to spruce up a beach worm with it !!!! Howard.
  15. Captain, The answer is Yes. You have a 14000, so you know how big the spools are. And you get 2 spare spools with spool fillers so you don't need to put backing or 1000 'yards on to fill the spool. As i said, weight was a big consideration , so the Ultegra and the live fibre are the lightest in weight we could find / afford .Compare the weight of the ultegra to the thunnus, The other reels you mentioned Straic Nasci etc, are not in the same class as far as Surf reels go. ( Ok just saw the thunnus has a new ci4 which is much lighter.)
  16. I have 2 MT7144 rods with alvey 650c5 and 700c5 reals. all 30 to 40 years old, but still in use!!!!!. Spooled with 15 and 30 lb mono. 650 gets ALL the use. My father had a 4120 which I have re built , it is our Friend and Family rod. if they want to fish. Have spun with a Seascape on anMT 8144 for years. MT8120 would be a brute !!! Regards Howard.
  17. What I was looking for when I bought these 2 set ups, for my wife and I.. MUST be light. Must cast a country mile. 6 to 10 Kg. As we have our 4 to 6, 10'6" light surf all ready. ( 6 kg live fibre , stradic Fk 4000. 10 lb Sunline super Pe. Super light and comfortable. ) The light outfits are good for most species, Salmon around 60 cm are great fun.But Distance was a problem some times. The answer after much debate and searching Was the WILSON LIVE FIBRE RLF45/2 CHAMPION TROPHY SURF ROD 13'6" 6 to 10 kg. The Reel to match is a Shimano Ultegra 5500 ci4 xtc. line Fins 40G 15 lb,( breaks at 25.) Results? These are now 2 1/2 years old, Could not be happier. Bream and Whiting from those far out banks? no problem. Feels like you are winding in your live bait. Salmon, the longer rod is noticeable on the arms compared to the shorter rod, and there not much of a challenge. Jew , Not Yet. The Bait runner set up doesn't bother me. it is weird though. There is also an 8 to 15 kg version of this rod. What Braid ? Hard Question, as so many are good. The Fins 40 G The outer braid can bunch up on the inner core, but not really a problem, The Sun line is a good line too, A bit course to the touch compared to the 8 carrier braids , but can't fault it either. I have been using the new Sunline 8 braid for River SP's and vibes, it is excellent, very smooth. Fins have a new 8 carrier braid too, but i haven't seen it. Regards, Howard.
  18. Marks 1984, I have the same rod with an ultegra 5500 reel. I too can't fault it. Howard.
  19. I only use Black Magic kl circle hooks when bait fishing, beach and river. Howard.

    Dyed bait

I have been putting beach worms in metho to preserve them for years, than a mate told me to put red food colouring in it. = red worms. Works very well. Often as good as fresh worms. Howard.
  21. I have a a wild and a wicked, Very light , very power full. Pick one up and have a feel. My go to if not using 1 to 3 kg. Howard.
  22. Amazing again JonD!!! Thank You. Howard.
