  3. Hey raiders long while between posts but I've been busy either fishing working or studying so no time to post anything. Kings have been very consistent over the past 2-3 weeks in the harbour with a lot of rats but some very serious fish in between them. Ive lost count exactly how many but ive caught around 30 with most of them being between 55-65cm but a few in the 70s thrown in and seen some cruising past that would've been well over 1m. The highlight/ lowlight was pulling the hooks on one that was around 1m right on the surface which left me with a sick feeling in my stomach, after a tough fight on pretty light gear considering its size (14lb leader) I got it up eventually and it was seconds away from a net shot when the hooks pulled and it swam off slowly just to rub it in even more. The baits that have been doing the damage are pilly cubes, yakkas and live squid/ cuttlefish.
  4. Always good to go for a fish eith the family mate good stuff

  7. Nice way to spend a day mate, I cant wait till the water warms up and it starts firing. Id say there are some bigger fish lurking underneath the tailor so might be worthwhile dropping a legal one down underneath as live bait.
  8. Thanks mate! yes hopefully there are more around next time Thanks Big Neil hopefully you get into some kingys this summer Landing them on that gear is all about getting the right balance of tiring them out and giving them a lot of stick, also gotta make sure all the knots are 110% They're great sashimi, but in terms of cooking them, just steaks on the hot plate with lemon, salt and pepper is insanely good. just don't cook them for too long, just enough for the meat to turn white. Thanks Mike, the rod is a custom built one around 7ft and the reel is a Stella 4000FE Thanks mate
  9. You gotta use the live garfish nicko

  11. Hey raiders, Havent posted a report in a while as i've been busy with uni exams but the itch finally got to me and I couldn't wait another day so headed out early this morning at 5 to clear the mind and hopefully get a kingfish as a bonus. Didn't bring any bait with me so was relying on the squid coming on the bite. It was a bit slower than id hoped but managed 4 in an hour which was enough to get me started for the morning. 6am prepared the first little lollipop squid pinned with a 1/0 owner in the tip of the hood and 14lb leader and slowly lobbed it out, opened the bail and set it down. I didn't even have a chance to turn around as I saw a decent fish smack the water near where I casted my squid. simultaneously my line tightened up and began peeling off my spool, gave it another 10 seconds before I picked up the rod and closed the bail and set the hook. the fish took a screaming run out and deep at the start before I started gaining line on it. It was slugging it out down deep before it began arcing towards the pylons under me and that's when I realised I was in trouble, I opened the bail into free spool for about 20 seconds and then loaded up the rod again to see the fish had swum out as I had hoped. This time I kept proper control as the fish took yet another but this time it was tired and didn't have the stamina, began putting on the hurt and it surfaced a few metres away, a nice sized kingfish. A fella that was fishing near me kindly netted it and brought it up. It went 74cm, not a bad way to clear the cobwebs and the exam stress. Quickly dispatched it and into the esky, thinking that there was going to be more action for the morning but that proved to be the only hit, still no complaints, sashimi on the cards tonight
  12. Its the braid itself, try using braid with more strands like 8 strand and you wont have the same problem, braids with lower strands have this problem
  13. Probably a surgeonfish, they are pound for pound tougher than any fish IMO they leave drummer for dead
  14. Thanks mate, not a bad start to the day

  19. Headed to the harbour early yesterday morning for a bit of a gander to see if anything was around, didn't have much time as I had an appointment at 11 so plan was to be out by 930. It was windier than expected when I arrived, but decided to push on so began burleying with pilchards but nothing showing up other than pickers however there was a fair few squid around which kept me busy, most of them being perfect lollipop size. It was completely dead for most of the morning until a live squid I had out got slammed and my rod nearly flew into the water. Grabbed the rod and immediately knew this was a decent fish from the weight, first run was blistering but I stayed patient and played it out, began gaining on it and again it went for a run. a few minutes later I had it turned and had colour, a nice sized king was on its side and gliding through the water. A few sketchy net shots later I had it up and it went 80.5cm on the brag mat. Dispatched it and into the esky which i couldn't close properly, as the time was 915 decided to call it then and headed home.
  20. depends where youre fishing. If fishing off a wharf 6-7ft is reasonable as most of the times the fish aren't going to be that far out. If youre at a beach or off the rocks and you need to get distance to find a gutter or steer a fish away from the rocks then 10-12 ft would be better.
  21. Good stuff yowie always good to get a feed of flattys
  22. NSW fisheries size limits are scientifically backed to allow a fish at least one chance at reproduction hence the change in size limit for jewfish a couple years ago. A kingfish around 65cm is 2-3 years old and would have already reached sexual maturity. Don't forget about population size, new Zealand has 1/5th of Australia's population and that means far less pressure on the fishery. If size limits increase to 75-80cm that makes it a lot harder for people restricted to land based fishing to get a legal fish as most of the ones you encounter fishing in estuaries are 50-80cm with some bigger fish in between. Don't get me wrong it would be great to have a fishery like the one in new Zealand but increasing size limits to that extent is unrealistic.
