  1. Mate, Clifton has heaps of Bream and Flatties. You can get em off the rocks with bits of pili. The by-catch is always good with Tailor, Jackets and A few snapper to 35cm if your lucky!
  2. I learned a lot from this article and things i have never heard on Fishraider. Im not at all saying its better than fishraider but it was just an interesting read.
  3. In was down there last sunday all day (landbased) and only managed small bream and catfish. In the early afternoon there was a big school of tailor busting up bait on the surface they were about 40m offshore but disappeared before i could tie my metal on! Absolutely Dead apart from that!
  4. Heard there a few at North Narrabeen atm also!
  5. Agreed about fishraider but mate i got it for $7.95
  6. A few good spots near middle head to chuck some lures around is the either headland of Clifton Gardens. You will get Tailor, Salmon, Bonito and maybe even a king if your lucky!
  7. Some Basic spots are Clifton Gardens ( Both rocks and wharf) , The reserves near the spit and maybe even try Watsons bay for a few flatties and bream! Tom
  8. Plannig a Fishing trip to darwin in the next few weeks! Cant wait!!

  9. My understanding has become alot better through this article. I now know things that i would have never guessed about before.
  10. Hey raiders, purchased a fishing magazine today which i probably shouldn't name due to site regulations. It consisted of 5 pages of pictures and fantastic tips on Jewies including Gear, Techniques, Tactics, Tides and much much more. We are considering purchasing a boat in the next year or so and this has motivated me even more. I have only ever caught a 30cm jewie but have had a few solid hook ups on jews at Milson Island and Bar Point in the hawksbury which all ended in the line breaking or me pulling the hooks!! This particular article was based on the Hawkesbury which i fish a lot and is arguably one of the best jewfish rivers in Australia! The tactics was one of the most interesting aspects as it mentioned that jewies are actually easier to locate during the day as they sit in holes and wait for bait to be swept into the hole by the current as opposed to locating them at night when they are hunting and cant be located as easily! Cant wait for summer now and have a crack at a few. Just wanted to share his with those raiders that are interested or are still hoping for their forst big jew! Tom
  11. Match either a silstar or ugly stik 8+ kg rod with either a Okuma Salina 11 or a Saltiga! Good reels and the Salina can be purchased for less thatn $250! Great livebaiting reel too!
  12. Yeh bad luck mate, another option is to fish with a prawn and tiny split shot (type of tiny sinker) and you will bring leatherjackets into the mix too. Got a few last time i was out there!
  13. hmm, thats normally a good spot. Then again it is Winter and the fishing slows down alot. I normally fish over there but tried the other side today for not much success except for a suspected Bull Shark Encounter! When i fish the spot you were at i have one rod out with a prawn, one with some pilli/mullet/squid and i get the tentacles off the squid and chuck one or two out on the hook unweighted (only about 5 meters from the shore) and get trevally, Tailor and Lots of bream up to 30cm! I had a big hit on my squid rod last time i was there and i ended up pulling the hooks on what could have been my first BIG jewie! What a shame.... There is the odd Flathead on offer further down on a little beach! Tom
  14. Hey mate, pm sent about which charter to use. As for the landbased stuff, Palm Cove Jetty is the way to go. I would have a couple of rods, one heavier one with a livie or big butterflied bait out under a balloon and you get monster Spanish Mackerel, Giant Trevally, Sharks and Tuna. Fish a patternoster rig on the other with fish bits for Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Barramundi, Giant Trevally, Mackerel and Queenfish! I saw a spanish mackerel around 45lbs landed when i was last there. I would stay away from the cairns estuary charters as there have been some disappointed raiders reporting about them lately. The estuary at Port douglas is also worth a go. Hire a tinny and get yourself some lures and livies and find yourself a nice secluded spot in the mangrove lined creeks and have a crack at some jacks and barra! Good Luck, Tom
  15. Sounds like a fantastic trip! I hope to get up to Darwin for a week or two in the next year. Hopefully i get a few great fish like you ! I caught a big golden snapper in Weipa last year and i have to say that it is the tastiest thing i have had in y life! Beautiful!
  16. Fished all day today at Roseville from 9:30 till 4:00 this afternoon. It was absolutely dead! The only action there was all day was a school of choppers busting up about 40m offshore. Couldn't tie on a metal fast enough and they were out of casing range by the timei got the lure on. Fished with Prawns, pilli and yakka fillets for zip. Just a 10cm bream and a small catfish like thing that was tiny! On my yakka fillet i got a run at the end of the day and picked it up and there was just dead weight. Pulled back trying to see if it was a fish or not and bang! The line broke !!! It was a big big fillet so it may have even been a bull shark.. any theories? I think ill give roseville a break for a while because i rarely pull a good fish out of these waters. Tom
  17. Also, when you were asking what to do when a big fish hits and runs with your bait all you have to do is tighten the drag and give it a wack. If there is still weight then either pump and wind or loosen the drag and let the fish run. I had a similar expereience near you about a year ago. I had a prawn out and all of a sudden the rod buckled over and the reel was screaming! I picked it up and gave it a wack to set the hook and it kept running. I locked my drag up giving no line to the fish and the line kept coming off!! It spooled me! Big Jew or Shovelnose shark i think!
  18. Here are some spots and tips i would suggest! * Troll North Head at the moment for salmon and tailor. There are plenty at the moment too! * Fish about 50 meters off grotto point with prawns and livies. On the prawns you can expect flatties, trevs, tailor and lots of bream and flounder. A livie here might get you on to tailor, salmon, kings and maybe even a jewie. * Sow and Pigs at the moment has a few snapper and trevs about with the odd salmon and king too! Berley hard!! Good luck!
  19. sorry mate, im no good with google earth I have very similar sessions to that off the south western corner of Dangar Island. We always get a few legal flatties, Tailor, Small Bream with a whiting or catfish thrown in. I find that if you are up for a challenge in the middle of the river next to where you were in the same line there is a great spot for jewies (big jewies)! Next time your out have a rod out with a livie or fresh squid or tailor, 1 out with a prawn and another with cubed pili
  20. Mate, where abouts were you fishing? congrats on your first flattie! They are a great fish to catch and sometimes fight very hard on light gear!
  21. Hahaha, sounds like a great mix. I have some yakka fillets about a week old and hopefully will give em a go tomorrow. Keep that trail going and you might even catch yourself one day

    John Dory

Mate, i havent actually caught a dory or tried before but i still have a few tips. Some good spots in the harbour are Balmoral, Clifton and where ever there is lots of livies, there is the chance of a dory being around. Just chuck a yakka out under a float and berley hard too. The by catch will be tailor, salmon, kingfish, Big Trevally and maybe even a jewie! Dory are quite rare and if you get one dont expect to keep pulling them in one after another. Tom
  23. Hoping a jew likes my fillets of yellowtail today at the Roseville Bridge

    Rod for Kingfish

I have a Silstar Crystal Pro Power Tip in the 7ft range. 6-8kg rod. Havent used it on kingies much but it could handle them easy. Most good tackle stores would have it.
  25. Thanks mate, im thinking October. Is that a good time?
