  1. Nice feed mate! I personally go for baitholder hooks raging from size 1 to 2/0 depending on what bait. I find that in the hawkesbury/berowra prawns are dynamite. You get your flatties but the bream and other species will happily take one too!
  2. Hey raiders, im going to have a crack at a dory or two in the next week or so and am having trouble getting yakkas. I get 2 or 3 bigger ones on a size 8 hook and split shot but cant crack one on a bait jig. I just drop it to the bottom and jig it slowly up and down. I have tried putting little pieces of prawn on but it doesn't help. Any tips? Tom
  3. I got a baitrunner 8000D yesterday. Mine is a bit different. Whenever i wind for say 10 seconds and stop the whole handle slips out of place. It seems that it is meant to happen but im not sure why. Does anyone know?
  4. Ive fished it before after rain and there i always manage a bream or too! There should also be jewies, blackfish, leatherjackets and tailor on offer. I reckon target the blackies and have another rod with some prawns or squid for the jewfish!
  5. Nice mate. What Mackerel ( Spanish, Spotted, Slimey or mack tuna?) I would be surprised if any mackerel apart from slimey was around at the moment!
  6. In the Harbour most go by if it is caught east of the bridge then it should be okay. I think most of botany and Port Hacking is okay too. Georges is a bit doubtful. I dont fish it much and dont keep fish from there but other raiders might be able to tell you otherwise.
  7. Sounds about right. Should be no problems with barotrauma then!
  8. Yeh mate, In Darwin the jewies that came up all suffered from baratrauma unfortunately. I will mainly just fish in rivers so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Some areas in the hawkesbury are deeper than 10 meters though. Does anyone know rouhgly how deep the water near the rail bridge is? If the fish gets baratrauma will it definitely die or have a chance of survival?
  9. Hey Raiders, just wondering, what are jewie survival rates like after being released. I usually abide by catch and release but occassionally i might keep a few fish. If the jewfish is brought out of the water for a pic and then returned with in a minute or so will it survive?
  10. Its taken a good year but i have finally got myself a Shimano Baitrunner 8000 D series reel!!! She's gonna get a good worl out over summer!

  11. Nice, got mine on a 4kg rod and a 3000 size reel. Took 15 minutes in only a meter of water. He went about a meter. Was casting a hardbody at a passing mantaray and he chased it and took it as i was lifting it out of the water!
  12. Caught a Blue Swimmer Crab on a bait jig in mid water... very strange... it wasn't very big and just under legal so a kingie could have spat him out maybe.. it was at the pill boxes near Pittwater about a year ago..
  13. Great Cobee mate!! got one last year at weipa and dont they really pull! Did you get him on a plastic or livie?
  14. Very on and off! Especially in Winter. My best times to fish the Hawkesbury are from january - May. Once the water cools right down its very quiet. In summer focus more on the shallow areas and in winter fish the deeper holes as my success is based around this. Especially for Flathead and bream. My favourite spot fishes best in April which is dangar island. I fish in about 3 meters of water and pull out at least 4 decent flatties per session aswell as crabs, whiting, tailor and bream/tarwhine. Burley an fish with prawns. Winter is usually quality while summer is quantity, especially for jewies here! Keep at it and try different spots and ones that work weel for you mark them on your GPS for next time.

    Jewies

Lets put it this way, you would be less likely to catch a jewie in the backreaches of a river on the run out and more likely to encounter them closer to the river mouth. Some of the big jews stay in their holes all day so this doesnt apply for all of them. Not saying that all the jewies go to the mouth as they don't, some just follow the current to another spot. This is where bridges come into play. The jewies love them! They use them as a current breaker so they wait behind the pylon ( sometimes 10 on the same pylon ) and when a baitfish gets swept past they take it. I might not be spot on with the theory about them usually following the tide but they use it to their advantage always! Your better off sending a pm to one of the real jewie anglers. Have a look on the thread posted earlier and flick a few of them a pm for some opinions. Tom
  16. The Squidgy Slick rigs are good mate. Not sure how big they make them but just find a colour of them that suits the bait and food they eat ( yakkas, slimies, pilchard, squid ) They have loads of colours even the specific baits you need. They have Slimey colour, Yakka colour and pilchard colour. Give em a go! Try 6 inch i think!
  17. Snapper and trevs inside at the moment. There are a few flatties about which is surprising but your best bet is targeting them at places like Sow and pigs which was earlier mentioned. For the dory alot of the areas with loads of boats hold them. Basically structure and bait = John Dory. Big Wharves, Moorings and some wrecks are the places to start looking for the dory. Good luck! Hopefully the weathers okay....
  18. Great work! The Whiting are hard to find at the moment and it seems that you found a good bite! A good feed there too!

    Jewies

Basically during the day the jews just sit in holes upstream of the current and wait for the prey to be swept past it. At night they come out and hunt. I am not 100% sure but i would say that due to them being lazy they would use the current to their advantage and go with the flow. I could be wrong but thats my opinion
  20. I fish Roseville a fair bit. Its a bit patchy in winter but i get the occassional big bream, flathead or tailor on the plastics. If you can get some live or fresh squid or yakkas then have a go at night on a tide change and you should be in with a chance of hairtail and jew! Your best chance for hairtail though is cowan creek!
  21. Good spot to fish for mullet with a float while catchign bream and whiting on the kiddie rods! It is very snaggy but there is a wharf and you can fish here if the snags become a bit much. Another rod with a ganged pilli or some squid chucked out wide shoould also get some attention from any passing flatties and salmon! Try the breakwall for the mullet and the wharf or to the right of the wharf on the breakwall for the other fish!
  22. Im also getting a new set up and i have been reccommended a Curado reel matched to a Shimano Mexican Fire rod. The rod is only about $140 but i will only use it a few times a year when on holidays and trips up north. By the sounds of it you have a reasonable budget and im interested as to which rods other raiders can recommend to you!
  23. Balmoral might be worth a try. I fish there and usually get Bream, Snapper, Trevally, Flathead and of course yakkas! Fish with prawns off the end of the jetty and you should get a few. For yakkas burley next to the wharf and drop a single hook rig down ( lightly weighted with a splitshot ) and you should get amongst them. The yakkas have been out in numbers here lately but are hard to hook! Good luck!
