  1. what allen has to say !! spilt cane lovely old style of rod but pointless to use in this day and age heavy slow and cumbersome, Expensive brittle and prone to breakage. the yanks and the japs have a market that produces and uses them but I cant see the point. Each to his own I suppose and if it pushes there buttons good on em but I think theres a lot of delusion and myth about its abilities and performance capabilities. high mod modern materials beat even the best moden split canes, hands down. On the old spilt cane front, the cane is inevitably too dried out from sitting in a garage or shed for the last 40 yrs. This will leave you with a rod thats way to brittle to use and will snap even after a restoration.Im Currently restoring one now that was in a cupboard and rod bag and even that was dried out. So my suggestion is to get it restored and hang it on a wall.
  2. joe the vast majority of graphite blanks and virtually 100% of factory grphite rods on the market today have a glass scrim in it this is a single base layer of glass wrapped in a slightly different direction to give it hoop strength and reduce breakage potential. remove this scrim and re-aline your graphite weaves can overcome the hoop strength problem and gives you an incredibly light responsive blank which will improve your performance but being true 100% graphite they do usually have a definable lifespan span under normal usage the best known scrimlesss blank on the market would be the Loomis GLX series but I will be using a Hastings GUSA for this rod as it has a better action for the job and greater stength charcteristics than loomis GLX's.
  3. Amongst other things I am using him to develop a new grip specifically for tournament fishing. It looks ugly as sin but is working out well so far. I just have to develop a way to produce it in under 3 hrs . Primarily though steve does a lot of product testing for me. I use his feed back to work out and fine tune things such as guide placement blank selection etc. he also keeps me abreast of whats happening on the curcuit so I can keep up with the "SCENE" All you tournie guys can check him and the product out at the tweed sessions he SHOULD a have a pretty mean stick Im putting together by then full Ti SiC guides, tournie grip, scrimless blank. Just look for the guy in the ex AFC shimano boat.

    Crab Id

I think they are called decorator crabs not 100% sure though. they pick bits of weed and growth and attach it to themselves. they are even known to get around with anemones on there backs. not uncommon just unseen... for obvious reasons
  5. Normally Im not a big one to do this but Id just like to brag that my development angler Steve Riley came in a commendible 10th in the hawkesbury ABT. big deal you say but he did it by going for quality over quantity weighing just 4 fish over the 2 days. With a score of 4.11 kg each fish averaged over 1kg and a horse of 1.38 on the final day made for some raised eye brows apparently. All fish were stopped on some new development Shearwaters, thus the crowing.
  6. glad to hear all turned out safe and well what was the problem
  7. Im happy to be proven wrong but still not convinced as these are only "forecasts". it also says this. "Forecast wind waves (sea) are calculated using the wind at the wind forecast location" Also no bouy indicated on the map just the forecast point http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/nsw/amfs/map.shtml
  8. These readings are taken from the wave rider in 100m about 8 miles off sydney heads. check this out for further info. MHL web site the yellow float that appeared in broken bay is actually an test acoustic sensor used to identify boats. well thats what waterways told me when I rang to ask em about it a yr ago
  9. still better than working. what flavour were those inshore tunas, Longtails?
  10. now theres a moment for the personal archives! congrats to katie and you both hope theres many more to come
  11. Penn slammer 560. a few more$$$ than you state but its a classic in the making. makes all the others look agricultural in comparison
  12. Nah its a mans recipe so it has to be easy. large tin or two of coconut cream or milk and a can of diced peaches( with or without liquid depends on your sweet tooth ) let it all reduce down to nearly a sauce then toss in the fillets to cook for the final few minutes. . I spose its not a pan fry more a sautee. Its just that I use a frying pan to do it thus the name The hard part is making sure you have enough sauce to smother and cook the fish properly without having to mess about turning it too many times. can = "soup can" size. not pissy little "girly can" size
  13. skined and pan fried fillets in peaches and coconut sauce made just as it sounds but tastes twice as good.
  14. this is a Bull. note the head shape (the fishes not May Be NOT's) BTW went 20 and a bit
  15. Cant see any problems with that and Id have little probelm fitting around that price range. send me an email on aglover@shearwaterrods.com.au btw getting a custom may be a bit of a hassle to start with but its less hassle than fishing for years with something that isnt quite right A
  16. Very nice. bout he biggest hen Ive seen or heard of. The down side of dollie fishing you can get damned sick of it after a while it does make great fishcakes and curries
  17. Congrats on your first legal king( too much time on the bream me thinks ) always good to reach a milestone.
  18. terry whoo hoo what a nice hen dollie you dont see to many girls that big what did she weigh ? your boat ? BTW Sunday was the day to be out apparently the radio chatter was full of bills from the 20 mile. I was out at 10 mile and there was a bit of bait but no luck apart from some fad dollies. had to pull the pin early to make the social
  19. Tim Won't find much newer stuff in that size for that price range. Infact thats the sort of value im putting on my tub ATM and youve seen that !! My tip is take your time. research needs and settle on a hull type/ brand first. Then look for the best package available in your price range. dont let your eagerness make you lump for the first boat you see. It may take you months of frustrating searches all along the eastern seaboard but it will turn up eventually.
  20. Having seen the product in question Id say your paying to much for the TLD and getting the rod for free!! Maples are new the freddies brand product. Made in china and I v strongly suspect based on there older wilsons/kilwell product. but without the even barely passable quality of the previous wilsons based freddies brand gear. you just need to look at the old maple reel you bought as an indication of product quality of the range. I may be wrong but as they are proprietry product I reckon they have a sales strategy where they elevate the price of the rod based on the fact that they are always going to make the offer made to you. Personally I'd be wary even at that price minus retail cost of a TLD. If you want a package have a a talk to the guys at ABA first as im sure they have equally good and probably better product that will suit your needs in that price range. ( here comes the plug) If you are prepared to part with a little more $ to get a rod perfectly suited to the reel you finally select and the fishing you intend to use it for feel free to email me at aglover@shearwaterrods.com.au
  21. Geez I would have though DPI would know all that. If not they certainly should as half of it is a licence and legal requirement!!! Interestingly they chose a US company. both state and fed fisheries were deplorable for there employment of preordained outcome freindly analysts. Along side the mob of turkeys who said the SBT fishery is in a healthy state. There are consultants such as the illustrious DR Underwood and the mob at Sutherland who handled the license and RFA debacle. $152,000 won't buy you much international research and given the current ministers bend over and take it with a smile from the pros attitude. Added to that as the licence fund hasnt been raped to pay for it. I aint gonna be optimistic until the final report is in. The cynic in me says that something is up and maybe they had to go over seas to find a company who would actually give the nod to what is a completly unsustainable method. lets hope I'm wrong.
