  1. you guys are still leaving from port stephens right? if you were in syd id be there!
  2. yeah the breakwall is good for bream (and apparently some big jew, kings), but ive always found the current moving too fast. Theres a jetty and a rockwall on the south side - good for whiting (lambton parade) marks point also has some good spots, but becasue your landbased and a raider ill share my fav spot with you; http://goo.gl/maps/wrZGh Rock groynes at the end of naru st good luck and let us know how u go
  3. awesome footage! would love to be there to see it first hand (hint hint)
  4. Ha - i was at that spot last week. dad and i were just wasting time so we threw some jigs out. managed half dozen lollypop squid in 30 min. left em biting. were using el cheapo jigs, size 2.0 and 2.5 - both worked. was fishing from right on dark (830 - 9pm)
  5. ive heard one of those old man fishing theories - that kingies will shut down around the new moon (ie: now). i dont know how true that is - as fish always have to eat, but maybe its got to do with things like prawn runs and they just arent interested in "normal" bait - who knows
  6. rats seem to be easy to catch (once you find em). they'l eat just about anything. i was pulling in rats over xmas just using pilchards and squid strips on a 2 hook paternoster. 4/0 hooks and a 3oz sinker at the bottom the bigger legal / hodlums seem to be much more fussy in their biats - so fresh is best and squid over yakkas. if i was you, and had 2 rods, id troll a lure and have a livie out. Xrap red head is my fav. dont spend too long gathering livies either. once you get 4 or 5 you should be good. Dead squid is also fairly good but i wouldnt use it whole. heck even yakka strips do okay (always fresh is best) as others have said - stay away from ganged hooks. play around the moorings and good luck
  7. mate - with all that squid , a kingy wont be far behind maybe try different locations for kings - its tough land based i know but they can be anywhere. Ive seen meter long kings in 30cm of water around ferry wharves in balmain ! deep water moorings around spit bridge, clontraf area would be pretty good. maybe up to middle harbour / sugar loaf bay
  8. lol ive had that happen before where the 2nd half of the rod flew off.... i just wind in and the rod comes back to you. no need to get wet !
  9. heres a list of wharves around syd harbour http://www.flagshipcruises.com.au/Wharves.aspx
  10. mono here too i started with braid and it was a nightmare. Birds nests, weed monsters - you'l see more of these beach fishing than anything else and you'l go crazy trying to untangle that mess. i cut out so many tangles that i just switched to mono
  11. Love culburra ive had great success just fishing from the beach - dawn or dusk are best. find a good gutter and away you go i hear the lake is producing heaps of good prawns recently. might like to grab a torch and a net and take the kids down. speak to the locals (drop into culby bait and tackle for up to date info)
  12. Thanks roberta! ive a mate who has the outback, and ill be trying that out next weekend! the "sit in" i was referring to was a "try before i buy" statement. as in be able to sit in it at the shop and the "small conditions" was in reference to launching from a surf beach. couldnt imagine getting past the breakers in a decent swell sorry for the confusion - was trying to be quick at work while the boss is away from his desk lol
  13. G'day all managed to convince the missus to let me get a kayak (finally), as ive been wanting to get one for a while now thought - what better place to ask for advice than here, before i go running all over town im after a kayak mainly for syd harbor and around the heads / longreef. i envisage a few beach launches (especially on our usual holiday haunts) - but only in small conditions Hobie seem to be the most popular by far and ive narrowed it down to either revo 13 or adventure models but i dont have my heart set on a hobie. Id like to look at other brands, preferably able to see / sit in before i buy - hoping you can suggest a few as i cant seem to find anything decent. i know they're out there, just cant seem to find much also - is there a good time to buy them? as in summer sales or just before the next model is released? obviously trying to save as much cash as i can and get the best deal possible
  14. managed to find one that would pull up on the myola side of the creek so i didnt have to go all the way round to husky. There were a few charters to pick from but the others had 20 odd punters per boat, whereas mine was a very manageable 5 - plus the guy running it was a top bloke. good for a laugh was a great day out. tough fishing and choppy conditions so we didnt go to far, but we did land a few kings each, plenty of other reef fish, went around and into the caves around crocodile heads and dropped a line in there ( surreal to be 5 meters from a cliff face, in a cave and in 100ft of water) saw a couple of nutters who'd climbed down to fish a low ledge on the outside of croc head. saw the camping grounds at the tubes (and gave em a wave lol). seals at drum and drumsticks, dolphins, rock climbers ... was a top day !
  15. This ^^ i was pulling in 80-90cm kings over xmas using a very similar setup - 40lb line min though. lots of fun
  16. link to aquatic zones didnt work: try this: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks/parkTypes.aspx?type=aquaticreserve&order=info
  17. overhead or Alvey reel is the way to go. i tried belting out a 3oz star sinker using a pendulum cast and an eggbeter... built so much pressure up in the line that it cut my finger deep! stiff rod with a nice whip action works best, but it isnt so good for fishing (ie: no soft sensitive tip)
  18. Hi All im heading to callala / culburra in the 1st week of the new year to visit family. im hoping someone can point me in the direction of a decent charter as i havent been fishing all year (thanks to the new baby) am keen to make up for it by chasing some kingies / snapper It will be just myself, and maybe the brother in law if i can convince him to come along, so it shouldnt be too hard to find a boat thats not already booked out if you could PM me the details of a charter that would be much appreciated. (strangely enough i cant find much on google) Cheers
  19. awesome sight. that camera man was nuts - jumping in with the bait during a feeding frenzy !
  20. i laughed so hard when the heli tried towing the boat...
  21. nice one! surprised its taken this long for the kingy's to enter the harbour in numbers
  22. where do you launch from normally?
  23. awesome work - especially land based care to share a rough location ? middle harbor ?
