thats the other part of the problem ! Aus may support sustainable fishing (cough - massive trawler - cough), but alot of other countries are raping our oceans. FAD tuna fishing shark fin fishing bottom trawling what happens when the fish are gone ?

thx slam it was old mans. swell was almost non existent i always thought blackfish were a "winter" or cooler water fish. if the ocean rocks are shutting down - when is the good time to fish for em ?

well managed to get down to my fav ledge, but got there alot earlier than i hoped as i had other things to do sat arvo. fished from 10:30 - 2, on the run in tide (think low tide was at 10) but only managed 2 yakkas on cabbage. they were massive for yakkas, and i didnt know they took weed the water was super clear, and i could see the bottom, which for the deep north head area is pretty rare! There were 4 other fisho's there going for blackies also, and there wasonly 1 managed a down between all of us. he landed a small blackie, but threw him back. Guess they werent biting there on that day. highlight of the day was around midday, when 2 humpback whales popped up not 20meters from the rock ledge. It was amazing. never seen them that close. Well within casting distance. One of the guys had to move his line they were that close! A few tail slaps and a fin wave and they were off. Made they day worth while !

i was down there 2 weeks ago. fished from the beach - found a nice gutter just off sunshine st. fished for an hour, from 4:30pm till dusk, on the run in tide, using standard surf rig (gang pillies). pulling in good sized salmon. landed 6 in an hour but left them biting as i was frozen and the wind was up ! (wasnt plesant, but when your catching fish who cares) had 2 rods but could only rig up one as i didnt have time to rig the second - kept getting smashed

G'day all im planning on hitting the rocks harbour side, around north head tomorrow afternoon, chasing blackfish if anyones keen to come along. had 1/2 dozen trips out last year without catching anything, and this will be my 1st time out this year (been too busy!) and im determined to break my duck ! ive got some great advice from the old hands on this site, and got my gear / rig tuned so im feeling lucky. just throwing it out there if anyones keen to tag along. cheers

i got one on sale from katmandu for 20bucks, down from like 80. Adjustable beam, infared on/off switch (just wave your hand in front to switch on/off). very bright

depends on your environment beach / ocean rocks - lots of wash and current. burly disappears fast. In this situation i rip apart pilles with my hands and drop the chunks at my feet, test the wash take it in and they tend to sink more (ie: pickers dont get them). I find traditional burley (frozen bread+pellets mix) goes too fast pier / calm waters - traditional burley - just put a frozen block into a onion sack and drop it in

the only things that i regularly watch for are rising / high tide change sunrise or sunset swell not too large (ie: unfishable - cant hold bottom etc) beach fishing is more about finding structure - get a good gutter, or move along the beach till you find the fish as you said - some days rock, some days are tough

was down there 2 weekends ago - got nothing although JUST out of casting distance we could see fish busting up, which was very frustrating too say the least

ive got half a dozen varieties growing in pots on the balcony use an old egg container, and fill it up with seed starter mix. plant the seeds and keep them warm. they take anywhere from 2-6weeks to germinate. once they are getting too big for the egg carton, transfer them to larger pots and start exposing them to sunlight. when they get too big again, transfer them to larger pots and put them outside i can send you some seeds of trinidad scorpions if you like - these things WILL knock your socks off. rated at 1.1mill scoville units.

i mainly pop off the rocks using a 50gram jet popper, 12ft rod, 20lb line. i find i have to do the drab up tight or it pulls line. i know what u mean when the popper skipps across the top - its frustrating. its really all in the technique. takes practice. keep your rod tip low, dont pump too hard or fast. even try a very fast wind (without pumping the rod) then stop, repeat.

now that looks like ALOT of fun on a fly !
