  1. OMG this day is going so slowly might wanna check out these free "escape with ET" emags - at over 200 pages each, they should keep you busy http://www.escapewithet.com/default.aspx
  2. this is daily reading for me: http://www.macrobusiness.com.au/ lots of housing / economics - but im into that stuff
  3. 1/8oz jighead is about 4grams. how tiny are your poppers ? any if they are that small the gear your using is quite heavy typical poppers are 20-50g. even the small ones are 5-10g
  4. what does the popper weigh ? i can cast a 1/8th sp jig 5-10m if thats all your getting with a popper - then you need some casting lessons - check out youtube. A pic is worth a thousand words as they say
  5. awesome report - sounds like you had a ball can you msg me the name of the charter you went with. cheers
  6. i had to google where Tura is. good luck ! wish i was out of the office today - feels like monday.
  7. ha - just what i needed a Friday funny
  8. hey mate id be keen to head out on weekends, share the costs and cleaning
  9. can be confusing, but once you know what to look for they are easy to spot. All the things said before are correct but it can be hard to visualise. heres a google maps of my fav beach - catherine hill bay. notice the gutters spaced along the beach leading to the ocean Heres a gutter running parallel to the beach (easy to see from above). notice how close to the sand it is heres a gutter running out to sea (a typical RIP) heres what it looks like from the beach level. quite a bit harder to spot
  10. take a picnic blanket, some sav blanc (or as kath and kim prefer some kardinay). head down to balls head, sawmillers reserve or bradleys head (bradleys is a National park - closes at 8pm so watch out) running ball sinker to swivel, 50cm leader to a #2 longshank. nice and easy. take the rod holders and enjoy the sunset!
  11. alvey reels are THE beach fishing reel. Tough, no moving parts. Can take all the sand salt knocks you can through at it. BUT - no moving parts means 1:1 retrieve ratio so it can take a good minute or two of solid winding to reel a long cast in. i wouldnt be using lures with it either. Also i could never use the side cast system that alvey reels use - but im just unco you'l also need a specific rod to use the alvey with - low reel seat and a xtra large 1st guide. their fairly common but it will limit your options spinning reels are fine to use. id get a 4000 size minimum. you want enough line on your reel in case you get a solid run... or a weed monster more likley i wouldnt be spending big either. the salt and sand will eat through any reel over time. If fishing from the rocks you may like to get a high retrieve ratio if you'd like to spin a few lures. overhead reels great on the beach. abit easier to maintain. cast further when used correctly. Although if you havent used an overhead before id stay away. getting birds nests its just painful. Also if you want to stay light on the beach then getting a suitable size takes abit of shopping around The most important thing is BALANCE. make sure you try the reel, rod and line together before you buy. you can use a balanced outfit all day. When holding the outfit in the shop, it should be balanced between the front of the reel and the end of the top handgrip Ive got a heavy spinning outfit that weights close to 2kgs. yes it sounds heavy but i can spin all day and not feel tired
  12. Ive got a theory: 99% of lures work as long as theres fish around. if theres nothing there, then your just wasting ur time. give it 2 or 3 casts and switch lures or move spots abit. Harder to do land based i know
  13. mate - doing better than i am. catching squid land based is tough ! well done - now to turn em into a nice kingy .... or salt and pepper squid
  14. the size of the rod is mainly to help with casting and getting the line above the waves sure you can use a 6' light boat rod, but from my past experience the longer rod helps ALOT fishing from the beach / rocks. the weight class of the rod doesnt have alot to do with the size. Wilson Shoreline, 10'6" running 10-12lb on a 3000-4000 size reel is a decent light surf kit
  15. just like hemmingways "old man and the sea" awesome stuff
  16. G'day carl glad to hear youve got saftey 1st Personally i dont wear a life jacket, but ive been meaning to get one also. Ive done a bit of research and found these: Inflateable PFDs: http://www.mustangsurvival.com/recreational/inflatable-pfds https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_itemdetail.asp?cat=144&item=18368&intAbsolutePage=1 i like these but they're a bit pricey https://pfdsales.com.au/?gclid=CJnvsOvbnacCFQSYpAod0nCrgA a inflatable PFD1 belt jacket: http://www.stearnsflotation.com/33-Gram-Manual-Inflatable-Belt-Pack-Series--P1711C17.aspx http://www.stearnsflotation.com/Inflatable-Life-Jackets-C17.aspx Its gotta be comfortable and unobtrusive or your just not going to wear it, so id go for the belt jacket. theres a heap to choose from! Also if you do go in, jackets can inhibit swimming away from the danger zone so keep that in mind when choosing! just remember: a life jacket won't necessarily save your life but it will certainly help. the main issue is stoping people going in the drink in the first place
  17. yep. sitting in an office each day wishing you were out fishing...
  18. its everything retail in aus (except plasmas) thats way overpriced. Its a fkn joke and the aus consumer is being taken for a ride. Sure we have to support local retail but theres gotta be a line. i just got back from the USA and i couldnt believe how cheap everything is over there - for the exact same product. at least 40-50% cheaper on shelf prices even before sales and bargining. its largely govt taxes and wages that account for the markup but retailers do add excessive markup in aus. no wonder online shopping is taking off
  19. theres something special when you can catch quality fish like that and clearly see people in their yards at the same time awesome report too
  20. well i can tell you kingies off the rocks you'l need a heavy rig. you dont have the advantage a boat has to move into deeper water or away from snags. also a long 12' ft rod has its advantages ... and disadvantages. a light game species like kingies will leverage the long rod length and put the hurt back onto you casting distance plays a bit part in spinning from the rocks if your hunting pelagics. look for a rod with a cast rating of between 40-100g. bream luderick snapper salmon etc you'l want a lighter tip and not such a heavy reel. something that can deadlift 2-3kgs straight up a rock face (if your high up) my point is - a jack of all trades rod is a bit of give and take in various aspects. for your budget your looking at a rod / reel combo using mono. go into various shops and ask them to show you some outfits. The sales are on now so you should get a good deal. make sure to get a BALANCED outfit !!! get them to rig it up and feel it for yourself. The rod should balance around the front of the reel. at the base of the top handgrip. you can have the heaviest gear in the world but if its balanced its so much easier on a long day
  21. theres so much free info about this on the net its not funny http://lmgtfy.com/?q=fishing+knots+and+rigs if its a hard copy your after - for a present maybe, geoff wilson knots and rigs book seems to pop up ALOT!
  22. surface poppers are great fun - i use the 55g williamson jet popper - can be trolled. anything up to 100g for casting distance
  23. its not just spots - but your rig and method of fishing. A good example of this was a few months back where i was fishing small and light, catching undersized bream and baby snapper. Lots of pickers and i didnt think anything else was about. a bloke rocked up and started fishing whole ganged pillies - and just as i suspected, he was getting destroyed by the pickers. Anyway he kept at it and after an hour he hooked up to a nice salmon. soon after caught a big Trev. next cast was a nice flatty.
