@Fab1Without trying to sound cocky, I've been a builder all my life and totally understand the "memory" you get in all coiled products.

That's why I actually said ANNOYING memory. Obviously an Alvey with a 6.5 or 7 inch spool is going to suffer less than the average spin reel that's half the diameter.

Even with the stiffest line on my large Alveys, memory is barely noticeable, if at all. Definitely not annoying.

Agree 100% mate. The bigger the better but its still there as you know.

Please let us know how your experiment goes.

    Cheers.

As a kid I'll always remember an aboriginal gentleman who was a great fisherman and a mentor to me catching jewfish on a thin cord handline.

Regarding memory in mono, you're right they all have it, but some are worse than others. Softer lines like @big Neil's Maxima and Platypus Platinum have minimal memory, whereas lines that are stiffer like Tortue and Schneider can have it quite bad. The trade off is the stiffer the line the more abrasion resistant, so when choosing mono you need to take this into account depending on the terrain you plan to fish.

This is one reason why the Alvey sidecasts fish so well with mono. Their spools are large and you don't get the annoying memory loops that you do with a spin reel.

For the record, I like Tortue for fishing around the rocks and Platypus Platinum or Low Stretch from the beach on my Alveys.

You get memory loops on any reel including alvey's mate. The coils are just bigger. You could have a spool a kilometer in diameter spooled with mono and you would just have memory in the mono of a kilometer in  circumference coils. The longer the line is on there and the older it gets the worse the memory is.

Nature of the best of coiling pretty much anything.Mono, extension cords, rope, etc. All have memory to some extent.

Let a us know when you catch a Jewie on straight through mono.

    Cheers.

When I started fishing seriously (in 1970), mono was the only choice in lines (my dad used to refer to fishing with “gut” or cord lines when he was a kid).
When I caught the kingfish passion (over 2000 boated now, but most of those were sub legal rats), I quickly realised the advantages of braid and now have 95% of all my reels spooled with various brands from 10lb to 200lb braid. HOWEVER, recently I have been targeting jewfish (Mrs Pickles prefers to eat Jewies than Kingies and got to keep the boss happy) and have been enjoying using 12-15lb mono due to the light line and extra stretch that it provides, but not game to tempt using anything other than fluro leader (60-130lb) for Kingies. I do however use mono on my blackfish reels as I am sick of the line knots l when fishing so light.

I’d be interested in others thoughts on mono for jewfish.

Jewfish would of been caught on anything and everything waaaaay before braid or fluro was even a thought in someone's brain.

My advice is don't over think it and there's only one way to find out.

Ditch the fluro and run mono straight through and see what happens.

I'm a shit fisherman and caught a 55/60 cm jewfish(by catch) about 15yrs ago on 8lb mono mainline and leader.I was fishing a running sinker rig at the time so I know it will catch them.

I don't fish fancy lines just platypus.

Good luck mate and keen to hear others thoughts.Nice fish in photo.

So what's your preferred mono, Rebel? There are so many, and a lot are too stiff or have problems with memory. I generally use MAXIMA mono (20lb) when baitfishing in freshwater. Obviously I use braid with a leader for my baitcaster outfits.

    Cheers, bn

All mono has memory from what I've seen due to the nature of being wound on the spool it's sold from then being wound on your reel.

I may be wrong but those coils you see are memory from the spool.

      I interested in others opinions.

Sorry mate,in all seriousness I rub my bait all over my brag mat and hold it in the water singing here fishy, fishy in the hope of attracting brag right worthy fish to it.

I think it's broken or it needs batteries as it hasn't worked in years!!

    Bloody Yowie I tell ya.

    Seriously no playing around.

Earth choice dishwashing liquid and a soft scrubbing brush(I use a cheap dustpan one) will have it clean and smelling nice in a jiffy.

I have used it for years on things like my canopy, rear vinyl bench seat etc.

It's cheap at the reject store or shops and is environmentally friendly.

Good afternoon, as many of you know I am in my hsc year of school, so am very restricted time wise. I can only really fish on sundays, sometimes once a month.

with these time constraints I struggle to get bait, my bait supply is running very low unfortunately and i havent been able to get out to gather more. Since I am mostly fishing late afternoon to night the targets reflect those species (at the moment with the dislocated shoulder, very limited) in particular, shark and jewfish, but also tailor, salmon, bream ect. I know what im asking sounds really cheap.

What im asking for is if anyone around the hills, hornsby, berowera, kellyville ect areas, if you have any fish scraps you dont want, particularly head, tails, blood lines, or unwanted bait (not guts) could you please send me a message so I could pick it up. I know it sounds really petty and why don't I buy bait, its just that I go through a stupid amount of bait in one night and at $10 per 2 mullet it all racks up to be pretty stupid. I also havet been able to work because of time constraints so yeah, im sorry about having to ask, please don't feel obligated to try and help, just if you have some scraps you need to dispose of.

Thanks very much in advance, it all helps. If you want me to, when I get some time to get some bait id be happy to get trade some of it.

Mate, try baits like chicken thigh marinated in crushed garlick. It's very cheap compared to traditional baits.

Bread will catch you baitfish too that you can use. There's options.

Sorry I  can't help more than that.

    Good luck with your studies.

🤣 Love it Fab! Always good to hear your thinking-out-of-the-box solutions :D

I do try to measure everything for my records, even if small. That said I make an exception for tiny reddies and chopper tailor - they just go straight back

  8. Option A: Don't catch any fish worthwhile measuring or bragging about like me and your brag mat that you've had for years like me will stay brand new and smelling like a freshly picked daisy.

Option B: Take a work mate along that stinks like a bloke we have at work that we are sure he eats rotten zombies and I can guarantee you won't smell the brag mat.

Hope my wisdom and knowledge helps.

haha you'd find a way to feed the 10cm pinkies even at the fish n chip shop

😂🤣😂 should have seen the flounder and bream.Made my 15cm bream look like they measure 5 meters long.

It's a joke what they can catch and sell and what we can catch and keep.

A boating story....a long time ago when I had a Seafarer Viking and used to fish the Banks all the time. My home made bait tank was a drum held in with an "occy" strap, and a water pickup for when we were under way. We got bait at the Lighthouse at the entrance to the Shoalhaven River like normal and set off for the Banks, about half way out, the boat started to get a bit "sluggish" but was pressed on, then my feet started to get wet, I looked around and the hose had come off and water was just pumping in at high speed, the fuel tank and everything was floating, when I eased off all the water rushed to the front, leaving us in deep water, floating fuel tank, live bait swimming in the boat, battery box submerged, about  half an hour with a bucket had us safe again, bait tank fixed, bait back in the tank and in our way.

I had a scare not that long ago.We had stopped for a night fish at lilli pilli and when it was time to head back to the ramp I'm scooting along and am thinking I'm getting spray on my shin and I could feel the boat getting really sluggish/heavy.

I look down at my feet and see water covering the floor about 2 inches deep.

I think shit and hit the bilge pump and just make it back to the ramp in time.Get the boat out and drain the bungs.

What I later found out was the Mrs had snapped of the anchor drains skin fitting when she put her crap under the bow and when I got up on plane the water spray was pissing in filling the boat up with water.

  11. I was just thinking years ago when I was young, weighed about 80kg less, had hair and original knees and teeth I had a girlfriend that was an absolute stunner to look at.

Any way we were out fishing in a hire boat when the heavens opened up and it started bucketing.

The fish(even the small ones) went off the bite when me being a smart arse turned around to her and said.....There's lots of underwater caves around here, I reckon the fish have gone into them so they don't get wet.To my amazement she said...probably,hopefully when it stops raining they will come back out.🙄

A few minutes had gone past(Probably 5min or so) when she turns around to me and says....But I can see the sand on the bottom when I look over the side and quickly reply with....The caves are under the sand and she says...oh with a dumb look on her face.😂😂

This happened in Windang for those that don't know. The lake is only a few meters deep at it's deepest.

I'm still in stiches now thinking about it.

She was a great girl but you could tell her anything and she would believe it.

I often wonder how the poor thing is going.

We enjoyed some great laughs together.

Feel free to share funny stories.

I don't blame you mate.I'm bored out of my brain indoors.Mate and I were going to go shore fishing at Windang today just to get out the house but decided against it as it's so darn wet and miserable. My boat is ready to be hitched up and start getting out there again now things have settled down with family.

Haven't been out since Covid mate.

I use to get out weekly or at least fortnightly.
