  1. Just wondering why is it really hard to find straight hooks with an offset eye? I have been taught to use a straight hook for livies so that the point doesn't dig back into the fish. What if I want to add a stinger hook, i.e. double snell? Obviously you need an offset eye for a snell knot or the sharp edge of the eye may cut/weaken the line. I was at the tackle shop and I couldn't find any straight hooks with offset eyes. What hook do you use for double snell for livies whether it be big squid or large yakka/slimies?
  2. Used these on the weekend offshore with a big snapper sinker but there was so much current that they ended up in a big knot. Probably work much better in calmer waters. Yet to try that.
  3. Very nice. Must have been a decent fight on such light tackle. How long did it take to land?
  4. Plain and simple, it is a lot friendlier than any other online fishing community. For example, you don't get flamed for asking a question that may have already been answered somewhere on the forum before. Sure, there is a search function, but quite often you can't think of the correct terminology or keywords to search for. People are always willing to help.
  5. Sure, keen to target kings. I normally fish wollongong but I wouldn't mind giving hawkesbury or botany heads a go for some big ones.

    Slimies

I am catching them offshore with sabiki rigs but don't know about in the harbour.
  7. I blame the windy weather
  8. I am keen to land some big kings in Sydney Harbour or Botany Bay off my kayak. I normally fish down south, launching off Bellambi or Port Kembla and have had some success but most of the kings there seem to be small. I am looking for someone who I could tag along with in Sydney Harbour or Botany Bay, preferably someone who has some experience with those waters. PM if interested.

    Slide Fishing

Funny how a lot of rock fishos cast as far as possible and then the guys on the boats try and get as close to the cliff edges as possible!
  10. If you are in shallow water, get a long stake out pole and anchor trolley. Stab the stake out pole into the ground and attach it to your anchor trolley. Otherwise get a drift chute or anchor. You will need an anchor trolley for all of these methods though because it is not safe to anchor on the side, only at either end of the kayak. Another more expensive method is to get a GPS watersnake type motor, that's what some pros use for comps.
  11. You must tell me the exact location of this spot then I may help you hehe
  12. My Stradic 5000 FJ is matched up to a Terez. Perfect for the boat and kayak. You can get them for around $200 if that's not too much for you, but they might be a little heavy for the 4000, maybe try it out at the shop first.
  13. Are mutton birds protected? I feel pretty bad when I accidently hook one up and try to avoid it. The other week I saw guy on the rocks catch one and then I am shocked as he kills it and starts plucking it's feathers out then places it into a bag.
  14. 2nd big snapper I've heard of being caught this year in botany bay right next to one of the boat ramps.
  15. I made my own bait tank from a pet food container and bilge pump. Only thing I don't like about a bait tube is that if any of your bait fish are injured and bleeding (i.e from the hook), they are a great shark attractant when offshore.
  16. That squid is so cool. I like aquariums but I've been told they require a bit of work and I am too busy fishing in my spare time as it. How much does an aquarium setup like that cost plus the squid?
  17. Squid come up to the boat after throwing out some burley (mashed pilchards, bread, tuna oil mixed) so it should help if the squid aren't too far away from your position landbased. When I target them off the rocks and I am casting out really far onto the deep weedy patches. So it will depend on your location and in this case I wouldn't bother with burley. The best lazy way to catch them is to use a yakka on a chopstick with squid prong on the end. Better than a completely metal squid spike because it drifts slowly in the current. Sit back and drink a beer and watch your fishing rod.
  18. They aren't protected but it is just an "unwritten rule" amongst fishermen to release them since they aren't particulary sporty to catch and are such placid animals. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/species-protection/protected-species
  19. Welsome to Fishraider, first is a shovel nose shark and the second is a port jackson shark.

    Rock Cod Species?

If you got it on weed, it is probably a Rock Cale. If you got it on prawn, or another meaty bait, it is probably a Kelpfish. Most of the time. "Rock Cocky has a rounded (cockatoo-shaped) head, while the Eastern Kelpfish has a more pointy head." http://ncmg.org.au/Story31.html Most importantly, they both taste like sh*#.
  21. Well, this will be of no help at the current time but in the near future you might want to check out http://www.urthecast.com As you would imagine, live feed would pose some privacy issues so this will only let you zoom to a limited level of detail, once it goes live of course.

    Rock Cod Species?

+1 kelpfish, similar looking to rock cale but different fish
  23. That reel is pretty wide so I think it would be pretty hard trying to thumb the braid. I'd only use braid on a narrow spool overhead but that's just my opinion. I'd go for the low stretch mono.
  24. It is worth adding tuna oil to the mix of weed, bread and/or sand? Or will that taint the weed?
