  1. Found this on ninemsn, scary: Fish, seafood may disappear by 2048: study Friday Nov 3 11:23 AEDT The adage that there's plenty more fish in the seas may not ring true much longer. The world's fish and seafood could disappear by 2048 as overfishing and pollution destroy ocean ecosystems at an accelerating pace, US and Canadian researchers reported Thursday. If current global trends continue, the loss of fish and seafood will threaten humans' food supplies and the environment, according to the most exhaustive study to date on the subject, published in the November 3 issue of the US journal Science. "Our analyses suggest that business as usual would foreshadow serious threats to global food security, coastal water quality, and ecosystem stability, affecting current and future generations," the international team of ecologists and economists wrote in "Impact of Biodiversity Loss on Ocean Ecosystem Services". The four-year analysis was the first to study all existing data on ocean species and ecosystems and synthesize them to understand the importance of biodiversity at the global scale. "Whether we looked at tide pools or studies over the entire world's ocean, we saw the same picture emerging," lead author Boris Worm of Dalhousie University, in Canada, said in a statement. Worm said the disappearance of species from ocean ecosystems had been accelerating. "Now we begin to see some of the consequences. For example, if the long-term trend continues, all fish and seafood species are projected to collapse within my lifetime -- by 2048," Worm said. "In losing species we lose the productivity and stability of entire ecosystems. I was shocked and disturbed by how consistent these trends are -- beyond anything we expected." At this point, 29 of currently fished species were considered "collapsed" in 2003, that is, their catches have declined by 90 percent or more, he said. "It is a very clear trend, and it is accelerating," he said.

  5. congratulations from another envious tryer. If you went out in the wind of today, you deserve to catch fish!
  6. Hi Kirill, aluminium aand fibreglas will both stand up to fresh and salt water alike. Aluminium boats are lighter, need less power to drive them and are cheaper to buy. Fibreglas is heavier and therefore generally provides a more stable craft that can cut through rough water faster/smoother. To see how stable a boat is, put it in the water and move from one side to the other, unstable boats (naarrow or light) will rock considerably more. The weight and the beam will affect stability. Whatever you get, it will be 1000% more enjoyable than standing on the bank looking at others in boats. Good luck to you.
  7. i agree, i just looked at the weekend weather report and the wind looks to be on the way up again. Thinking of working on saturdays and sundays and taking tuesdays and wednesdays off. Might be more conducive to fishing!
  8. Hi Kirill, well China does make some good large boats so i cant see why the smaller ones wouldnt be ok too. My guess is you are well advised to chat to the Customs people, you may well find your $20k boat will end up costing a great deal more with duty etc applied to it. It would be hard for me to buy a boat without some reference on it, the trouble is, no Oz based Boat dealer is going to give you an unbiased review on it. Goos luck.
  9. That Groper is one giant fish. Seems criminal to kill one if you ask me, so docile and peaceful.

  18. Guys, it may not be close but Akuna Bay has security guards at night, it does cost $11 to enter the park or $60 (i think) for a years pass. That is cheap compared to the damage and inconvenience of repair.
