  1. Hi Dave, I cant say that Im a good fisherman but my experience with tailor is they take anything especially a slice of any colour. Iust toss out whatever your using and reel for your life, you cant miss. Salmon on the other hand can be picky, usually they will take only lures the size of the bait ball, but my mate always seems to get them with a pillie on a ganged rig(3x3/0) My trick is to just throw a slice into them and just reef it, usually I jag 1 and haul it in. Great fighting fish but not much chop to eat, so catch and release is the go there. I take 1 for fishcakes and leave the heroes to the rest. (Thai fishcakes yummm) I usually get bonito on hard bodies shallow or deep diving, trolling. I dont think colour or size is important(only my opinion) As for kingies I will leave that to someone with more experience than me. I hope to change that this summer!!! Any outfit is good, its just how much time you want to spend getting it to the boat, as for leaders that would depend on the size of the fish. On your 10lb braid I would use 15lb mono, but others would use heavier. Good luck, half the fun is trying.
  2. Im with Bentstik, they invented sickies for just this reason.
  3. Thanx for another great day out Alan, good fun and good company.
  4. Went out today at 6am Gary, Small tailor at the spit, plenty of baitballs in middle harbour. Cruised the cliffs at north head and got bonito. Just around the corner at Manly found a giant school of salmon. Went to long reef out wide and saw plenty of striped tuna, birds working everywhere. Talked to a bloke back at roseville and he said he found kingies and I saw them about 1/2 a km out further than us. We got flatties at the reef bottom bashing. Good luck, but I dont think you will need it.
  5. I was there last night at 530pm and he was out. perhaps ring and see if he is getting more and when............. Then post here
  6. Slinky and Tuffy have it right, thongs are the go. I have used them and they last a season if you use them every weekend, otherwise a couple of years at least.
  7. Yeah, well thanx for the call. That could have been me. Great catch bro. Just wish I was with you. hopefully I will have a tale to tell tomorrow. Just a thought, try a couple battered with a wedge of lemon, you wont be disappointed.
  8. WOW.......I am pelican, but wanna be wiseone. Both really valid, but for some, not viable. Be it money, knowledge, facilities. It is a complex situation. All I know is be as respectful as you can to fellow boaters and your neighbours and do the best you can..............It comes back 10 fold. My 10c worth
  9. Very very nice, I bet he was stoked to see that thing pull up. Thats a pb he will have for a while too.
  10. How does the saying go????????....Dont take a knife to a gun fight!!! LOL Great kingies mate, I wish I was there.
  11. and I thought I was a keen fisho, I take my hat off to you sir. And you got a good feed too.
  12. Yeah ... nice Bro, but where do I sleep??????????
  13. That is awesome mate. That is almost the exact same place where those bonito boiled up for me last week.. Im off out tomorrowto see what I can see. Maybe maybe I hope
  14. Great stuff mate, I can thank this site for most of my successes too. The elusive jewie is my next target as well.
  15. Went out yesterday morning EARLY.......message to myself, gotta stop getting so juiced up before an early start. Took out a friend that hasn't been fishing in a boat before.I was thinking that I will take it easy and putt around doing a bit of bottom bashing, perhaps fish the high tide in patonga creek and have lunch at the pub (hair of the dog) and be home by 1. Headed out and the easterly wind was whipping up a fair bit of chop. There wasn't going to be many places to hide so I just sucked it up and went for the headland. The front wasn't tooo bad so we did a few drifts directly off the front and scored a couple of pinkies, but that was it. Then I came in close to the rocks and dropped a livie out while I kept my mate going with a couple of light rods out. The berley trail wasn't doing so well due to a fast drift I even had my sea anchor out . I managed a squid that went for my livie and I jagged it with the stinger and my mate thought that was my skillful fishing prowess . The wind really got up then and I said lets pull the pin(really not feeling well now) and started to head back. On the way I noticed 4 terns about 200 mtrs away toward box head diving into the water and decided that perhaps it was worth investigating, I couldn't see anything on the water due to the wind but when I got there it was mayhem, squid ink everywhere and a big school of bait fish. i didnt know what to do for a minute, then deciced that if there was ink in the water then they were not the only predator there. Out with the ole trusty abu and a slice, still rigged from the other day. Cast out and on the retrieve.......Bingo Im on. Shit this aint no midget i have on. I work it to the boat and get colour, Its a bonito about 36cm, that was hard work, so I gave the abu to my mate and said "have some fun". I pulled out my kingie rod and whacked a slice on that and procedded to skull drag about 12 of them in before they took off. My mate got 3 but he had to work hard for his fish... We kept one(the wife loves them) and put the rest back. By the time we had finished it was howling eastly and it really was time to go. i think my mate had fun by the look on his face Another beautiful day on pittwater.
  16. Boban........What gets me most about Craig, is that his focus is not on money. That is so obvious by the way he deals with you over the phone. Not many like him. I couldnt agree more. I wont go anywhere else.
  17. When IS the right time in sydney. I wouldnt mind a few for dinner. I have a collapsible net which I want to give a workout. When is a good time for blue swimmers also? A bit of chilli crab would go down a treat.
  18. The rod is an Abu Garcia 1 piece spin rod with a Daiwa sweepfire 4000 reel. Im running 16lb mono on it but intend to drop that to 12lb braid so I can cast further. The reel is a bit of overkill for the rod but I mean to catch rat kingies on it this summer and I want it to stand up to the punishment.
  19. After my success yesterday I just had to go out again and see if it was a fluke. Checked out the weather and it said that it wasn't going to be very good. Looked out the window( I look over pittwater) and decided that the weather man was off the mark. Headed out at 830am, except I thought it was 730am. Cruised straight to spot that shall remain nameless and toss out the trusty ole spike under the float trick, and kept in close to the rocks and flicked a jig. when your hot, your hot!!! 10 minutes later I scored 1 of these little beauties and 2 casts later the other. 38 and 37cm hood. I was actually hoping to catch something a little smaller for kingie bait. But you can't have everything. I checked out the front of barrenjoey but the swell was a bit much for my tinnie, so decided to get a couple of yakkas and head back into pittwater. Stopped in at careel bay for a drift with a yakka on my kingie rig and picked up this sambo. Not much fun on 30lb braid and 60lb leader, but a fish never the less. All in all another good day. Now to get home and watch the storm carve it up............

  23. Went out yesterday in the wind for my fix. launched from bayview and headed for the headland. On the way I found the birds working just off the basin. I got all excited and raced over to find I wasn't rigged for surface action out comes the knife and slashed the leader and sinker off my abu garcia and frantically tie on a slice. After getting the treble out of my thumb, i quickly tossed in and Im on. !0 casts for 8 tailor of 30 to 33cm Things are looking up. I had a good feed so I left them to it. I had fish so I thought I would try for a squid and headed to the headland but someone was already working it. I think it was a raider too. So I shot out to the front for a look but it was a bit rough and decided to go over to west head for a look. I grabbed a few yakkas and moved on to flint and steel for the bottom of the tide, which got me a donut The wind was picking up now so it was off home but for some reason I decided to stop at another squid spot which will remain nameless. I dropped a float out with a spike and a yakka under it thinking I will practice my squid jigging while I wait. 10 minutes later I get my first squid jigging. Im over the moon. I glanced up after getting it into the boat and I cant see my float, Damn its caught on the weed. Luckily I had lost a couple of squid last week so I didnt jag it out, I just pulled gently and it pulled back. Mmmm I get it to the boat and there it was, 40cm hood. I couldnt have asked for a better day, minus the treble in the thumb Off the water by 330pm,having salt and pepper squid at 530pm for dinner.
