  11. Nothing from the minister yet but here is the reply from Phil Bolton Fisheries Manager Hi Chris Industry and Investment NSW is aware of the community concern regarding the use of electric reels by recreational fishers to harvest deep sea fish. I&I NSW will ensure the issue is formally consulted on, as part of the review of NSW bag and size limits, which is due to commence in 2011. The consultation will provide all anglers and the wider community with an opportunity to have their say on the continued use of electric reels in NSW. The discussion paper will be made widely available, please take the opportunity to provide your comments when the paper is released. Regards Phil Phil Bolton | Fisheries Manager | Recreational Fisheries Management Industry & Investment NSW | 202 Nicholson Parade | Cronulla NSW 2230 | PO Box 21 | Cronulla NSW 2230 | Australia T: 02 9527 8505 | F: 02 9527 8536 | E: phil.bolton@industry.nsw.gov.au W: www.industry.nsw.gov.au | www.dpi.nsw.gov.au
  12. As the owner and user when I can of electric reels I sent this to a few MP's Director of Fisheries 'information-advisory@dpi.nsw.gov.au' Kevin Greene 'kevin.greene@parliament.nsw.gov.au' sport & recreation Robert Brown 'robert.brown@parliament.nsw.gov.au' shooters party Tony Stewart 'tony.stewart@parliament.nsw.gov.au' local member Bankstown Steve Whan 'office@whan.minister.nsw.gov.au' Minister for Fisheries As recreational fishing is the biggest sport in Australia let alone NSW, I feel you should consider my disagreement over the proposal to ban electric fishing reels by the Dept of Fisheries. I would like to register my disagreement with the proposed banning of electric reels for deep water fishing that was reviewed by the advisory council for recreational fishing on August 25 2009 and motioned to be supported and implemented. As an ethical fisherman that is a member of Fishraider.com.au and backs the catch and release of species plus limiting your catch to only what you need for eating, I’m an owner of such a reel combo valued at approx $3000.00 when set up on a rod to a ready to fish status and I feel it is ridiculous that this proposal should even be considered as these reels have been in use by anglers for the past few years and any motion like this should have been reviewed before the population of these reels reached the current ownership level and costs incurred let alone the fact that these reels are still legally for sale and use with no notification of the proposal to the fishing public that may own one or be considering buying one. The comment of “The current bag and size limits were developed based on traditional harvest methods of deck/hand winches” is irrelevant for recreational fishermen in trailer boats that travel to areas where they can target the species listed “gemfish, blue-eye trevalla (blue-eye cod), hapuku, banded rock cod (bar cod) and bass groper” . How can bag limits be reviewed by outdated techniques years after new technology has been used during the same year that new bag limits have been set per the statement “based on traditional harvest methods of deck/hand winches” as current figures would have to include species caught by electric reels. This type of deep water fishing only has access available during acceptable weather conditions during seasonal periods where there is a window opening of less than 20% of the period in my opinion. 99.9% of anglers adhere to the set bag limits and endorse the regulations for the sustaining of target species but it appears that beaurocracy has decided it can gouge more fees through issuing of permits by the look of the minutes tabled for the meeting, I can only gather that this will be used for compensation of anglers that have these reels and won’t be interested or eligible for a permit. I look forward to your views on this subject and a well researched review rather than a stroke of the pen acceptance by the committee. these are the replies so far Robert Brown MLC (Shooters Party) Hi Chris, As shooters, we have seen stupid, poorly considered bans on all manner of firearms and related tools, over the last quarter century. We absolutely reject the idea that electric reels should be banned. I have witnessed the use of these reels, to catch Gemfish. Roy Smith and I believe that ACoRF (the Government's advisory group on rec fishing) will reconsider a "draft" recommendation to ban electric reels, once the facts have been properly presented to them. We understand that the matter will be considered, by ACoRF, in detail this month. If however, advice does go to The Minister to ban this equipment, be assured that Roy and I will vehemently oppose any Regulation to introduce such a ban. Regards, Robert Robert Brown, MLC The Shooters' Party Parliament House Sydney Phone 02 9230 2573 Tony Stewart MP for Bankstown (local electorate) Thank you for your email. I will forward your concerns to the Minister for Fisheries, The Hon Steve Whan, for his attention and advice. Once a reply is received from the Minister, I will write again. Guppies

Dicko unless the pondage is heated or doesn't chill you will only find Gambusia that look similar these are noxious in waters outside Sydney greater metro refer this page NSW DPI Noxiuos but OK in Greater Sydney metro area, they look similar most golf courses and park ponds will contain Gambusia a bit of bread will bring them out if you want Guppies you would be better to get a couple of gravid females from LFS and put in the pond, all you need is some weed and the females should release fry (livebearers) that should multiple over the next few months before it starts to get too cold If you want something long term other than Goldfish or Gambusia buy some Mountain Clouds or look at local natives like Empire Gudgeons Chris
  19. Robeebee Nice to see another quality timber boat in production from your family Interesting shape I'm looking forward to the finished unit mmmmmmmmmmmm shiny laquer Chris
  20. As far as tall tales go, this one's a whopper. A crew man who decided to do a spot of fishing over the side of a towering bulk carrier off north Queensland has been stung by a tiny Irukandji jellyfish flung skywards from the sea below. A spray of seawater carried the jellyfish 25 metres up, hitting the man as he stood on the deck and leaving him with a nasty sting. "This is one of the most fascinating tasks I've worked on," said air crewman Geoff Abrahams, who aided the response of the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter on Sunday. "Realistically, what are the chances of being stung by a jellyfish when you are safely on board a bulk carrier 25 metres above the water. It's really incredible." The helicopter landed on the bulk carrier, Konmax, and flew the man to Mackay Base Hospital, where tests confirmed he'd been stung by the jellyfish.
  21. Excellent article Mik nice to see you passing on the secret's of the shed bearing blue on the ear piece of a phone is fun too BTW do you still have Fanta Pants or has she been passed over after you upgraded Chris
  22. looking good Mik what grease are you using as it is a different colour to the old grease used in the tear down pics have you changed the grease used and was this because of the grease properties ? I ask as I don't like mixing grease in hub bearings and I have seen hubs that were rainbow coloured from changing the grease used when topping up bearing buddies I was shown that the washer should be able to be moved with a screwdriver blade after pre tension then pin to the nearest hole location after checking the free spin Chris
  23. Mik nice thread and a handy reminder no fun being stuck on the side of the road with clapped out bearings watching the other boats go bye BTW where's the WD40 or Inox no need on your well maintained set up doing this but ...................... just in case the corrosion on threads has built up on unmaintained bolts and screws now for part 2 Chris
