  5. BLACK ROBBERS (A True Story) For anyone who didn't see the episode of David Letterman's show where this story was told, read this: (And remember it's a true story...) On a recent weekend in Atlantic City , a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. 'I'll be right back and we'll go to eat' she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was very tall and had an intimidating figure. The woman froze. Her first thought was: 'These two are going to rob me.' Her next thought was: 'Don't be a bigot; they look like perfectly nice gentlemen.' But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move. Panic consumed her. 'My God' she thought, I am trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore. Then one of the men said, 'Hit the floor.' Instinct told her to do what they told her. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator floor. A shower of coins rained down on her. 'Take my money and spare me', she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, 'Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button.' The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet. 'When I told my friend here to hit the floor,' said the average sized one, I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, ma'am.' He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. The woman thought: 'My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself.' She was too humiliated to speak. The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her floor, they then insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door, they bid her a good evening. As she slipped into her room, she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband. The next morning flowers were delivered to her room; a dozen roses. Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred-dollar bill. The card said: 'Thanks for the best laugh we have had in years. It was signed: Eddie Murphy & Michael Jordan.

  18. If the utube video of a group dumping undersize fish wasn't enough By Gemma Jones, Political Reporter THEY are majestic swimmers and friendly, making blue gropers a favourite among Sydney snorkellers. However that same lack of fear has led to the death of 15 of the fish in what authorities have described as one of the worst alleged fishing crimes they have encountered. Fisheries officers were appalled to find the 15 eastern blue gropers, which are partly protected in NSW, when they searched a 39-year-old Lansvale man's bag at Wattamolla in the Royal National Park last week. Photographs of the dead fish, ranging from 35cm to 65cm long, were taken as evidence and the images show horrific spear injuries. The eastern blue groper is the state's emblem fish and the species has been protected since 1969. It is illegal to use a spear to catch them and they can only be caught by rod. There is a limit of two per person. The man faces up to three months in jail or an $11,000 fine for illegally possessing fish and the same penalty for exceeding a limit if found guilty. NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said the mass slaughter of the fish was horrifying. "This is perhaps one of the most deplorable fisheries crimes I have ever seen and offenders can expect to face the full force of the law," Mr Macdonald said yesterday. "This should serve as a warning that spearing blue groper is highly illegal." The fish became popular with Sydneysiders when "Bluey the groper" interacted with snorkellers off Clovelly beach, becoming a popular tourist attraction until his presumed death several years ago. The incident comes just days after The Daily Telegraph revealed a group of fishermen had videoed themselves throwing back dead and dying undersized fish and posted images online. A spokesman for Mr Macdonald said NSW Fisheries Officers were attempting to find the men.
  19. Sarah Vogler October 24, 2009 11:00pm A MONSTER predator lurking off the Queensland coast is so big it was nearly able to bite this 3m white pointer shark in half. The massive chunks were probably taken out by a giant white pointer that could easily be more than 5m long, based on the size of the huge bites on the sides of its smaller rival, experts say. The shark-on-shark attack occurred off North Stradbroke Island, east of Brisbane. The monster took advantage of the smaller shark being snared on a baited drumline set off the island's popular Cylinder, Main and Deadman's beaches. The State Government, which issues licences for shark nets and drumlines, has been under pressure in recent weeks to scale back the program after five migrating whales were trapped in nets off Queensland's coast. But Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin said the capture of the 3m shark – and the indication of a larger one feeding in the area – bolstered the decision to keep shark nets and lines in place. He said there were no special plans in place to hunt the monster shark but contractors had reset drum lines in the area. There were shark jitters among some on North Stradbroke Island yesterday, where the water was packed with surfers for the annual Straddie Assault contest. Ashton Smith, 19, of the Gold Coast, was menaced by a 2m shark while surfing with a friend off Frenchman's Beach at Point Lookout on Friday. "It was quite close to us before we realised it was a shark. We came in (to the beach) because it was hanging around. "I've heard about the big one lurking. Every surfer is always cautious over here." Fishing charter operator John Gooding said shark numbers had dramatically increased in the area recently. "They're everywhere. Some days you struggle to get a fish on to the boat before the sharks take them," he said. There were no shark sightings yesterday from crew in the Westpac rescue helicopter which patrolled the Gold Coast, North and South Stradbroke Islands and parts of Moreton Bay. On the Sunshine Coast, Marcoola Beach was shut down briefly yesterday morning after a reported shark sighting. But it turned out to be a 2.5m manta ray. In the 47 years since the shark net and drumline program was introduced in Queensland there has been only one fatal attack on a protected beach. That was on the Moreton Bay side of Stradbroke Island when 21-year-old student Sarah Kate Whiley was killed at Amity Point in January 2006. Australian Marine Conservation Society director Darren Kindleysides said recent figures on the number of sharks caught showed the nets were working but at huge cost to whales, dolphins and turtles. Hervey Bay shark hunter Vic Hislop believes sharks nets are too damaging to the overall marine environment. He thinks methods should be explored to scare away sharks rather than capture and kill them.

  21. One lucky man A man who climbed a tree to escape crocodiles spent up to 12 hours on an shaky branch while the creatures circled around him. Stan Martell told police from Wyndham, in north-western Australia, how he had feared being taken by the crocodiles after his boat capsized in the Lynne River on Friday night. He fell asleep to find his boat had become jammed under a mangrove tree trunk and filled with water, and had to climb the tree that had trapped him because of the danger of crocodiles. He told ABC radio on Tuesday he had seen "two (crocs) right where I was. One was a big one, and one was about 10-foot". "I crawled up as high as I could and just sat there like a koala bear all night," he said. Mr Martell said he had spent the night worrying that the tree branch would break before he could climb down in the morning and activate his boat's EPIRB signal. Sergeant John Kazandsis, of Wyndham police, said it was fortunate Mr Martell had not tried to get up on one of the mangrove banks in the area. "If he'd gone up on one of those in the dark it would have been very risky," he told AAP. "There are a lot of crocs in that area. "He only saw a couple but there would have been plenty more under the water." He said Mr Martell, who was found by searchers about 11.40am on Saturday, may not have been discovered without his EPIRB. "He had a satellite phone but it wasn't functioning after his boat got submerged," Sgt Kazandsis said. "If he didn't have the EPIRB he would have had to rely on someone reporting him missing or someone seeing him. "There's not much chance of someone passing him where he was," he said.
