  1. AHHH, the snow ball effect.
  2. Mate, the place is huge and can be hard to find fish. Just off the boat ramp at Calala you can get your livies of any description, squid ,slimies and yakas. Around honey moon on the north side is good for squid. As Marto said the middle grounds are generaly a productive spot. Keep an eye out for birds and surface action as pelagics can turn up anywhere in the bay.
  3. Frigates and bonnies will take very small baits specially if they have a bit of flash. The joys of fishing, the one that got away.
  4. two bonnies and a broken rod, sounds eventful. my son is only two but I cant wait to get him fishing. I spent my youth fishing with my dad and grandfather and I hope my boy can share similar memories. Fishings great, catching fish even better but farther son time is priceless.
  5. Went for a run up too woy woy this morning, never been there before but it looked good on google earth so I thought I would give it a go to scratch the itch so to speak. Ive seen a few guys talking up these Z man grubs so with yet another addition to the takle collection I pulled up at the boat ramp at the brick wharf road nice and early. Tied on a two inch grub in blood worm/1 gram jig head and started working the weed edge and drop off. Tailor after tailor, all small but maybe 6 to 8 of them all took a liking to the little grub and still it remained in one piece with the tail still twirling beautifully. Even had a fan tail jacket try and snip the tail of with no luck. Pulled a nice flattie, about 42 cm. great fun on 2kg braid 1000 stradic and a s002 samuri I built recently. I saw two massive whiting cruze past right at my feet. what a lovely bit of water. Anyway, I will definantly be giving the Zman lures more attention in the future.
  6. Good one. As a spearo I have a soft spot for the big blues and think the ban on spearing grouper was brought in way too late. They are one fish that I think should have a 70 cm max limit and 30 cm min. An awesome fighter, good on the table and the big ones absolutely awesome seen up close when diving. I rarely see a real big blue these days but the smaller ones are prolific in some areas. If you take one of the browns for the table on the odd occasion good luck to you.
  7. Last year up the parra river is saw a school of poddies going nuts in the shallows, it looked more like a bait ball of shore getting rounded up.in the space of 10 to 15 casts I pulled two good flatties three bream and a massive whitting from the immediate area. question is was what you saw the prey or predator.
  8. Well done, I know the feeling. my inlaws always giving me s$%@ for catching nothing. they do not understand catch and release or the fact that just being on the water having a flick is all a lot of us need. Catching rats on light line is an awesome way to get people hooked on fishing but a meter plus fish has the potential to create a monster, good luck and once again its good to see persistence pay off.
  9. It is amazing how hard the little buggers pull on lightish gear. well done, I love to see persistence pay off. I cant wait for my little boy, now 2, to be able to hang on to a spin road so I can get him connected to a rat. I recon any kid whos caught a kingy is gunna be hooked for life.
  10. Just a reminder, it is illegal to target great whites even if the intent is to release them. So if you do happen to go fishing for a shark in Lake Mac it was bull sharks you were targeting wasn't it.
  11. AAWWW, poor scratchie. Must be tough living up there , Bonnies I got at longy on sunday were stonkas. I am sure the beakies will be hitting there strides in the next couple of weeks.
  12. " I knew it would happen one day that I would lose my chit and today was the day..I went and targeted Carp OMG!!" Gee, I really hope you find your chit soon. I was talked into chasing carp by a European fella who kept talking them up. I wasn't disappointed, My fav shot is the one with the knife hilt deep in the carps gills. Sounds like a great day, you have me thinking about giving them another crack.
  13. Well done, just goes to show it pays to try something different from time to time. Even something that hasn't worked in the past.
  14. I recon the only good thing about old sarg is that they are an indicator you are in the right area for reddies.
  15. As the others have said, you get all sorts. Mainly good people. Balmoral late one night, fishing alone I had a very large very drunk close talker spend 20 mins telling me how to catch everything you could think of. I just maintained a friendly conversation even as he annoyed the crap out of me and he eventually cleared off. A couple of weeks ago down at Ermington, about midnight and a group of about 8 young leb guys turn up looking pretty dodgy, Im thinking here we go, this could be interesting. They make there way out to the pontoon, im feeling pretty vulnerable even though I think I can handle myself alright. I turn around and ask how there going and what they ve been up to tonight. Turns out they are a top bunch of young guys most keen fishos and chatted to them for about an hour before they cleared off. Anything you do by yourself at night(not in your home) comes with risks but so does driving to work every day in Sydney traffic. I recon get out there with a positive attitude, be aware of your surroundings don't be lairy and catch some fish.
  16. Those tusks look like they come from a particular sub species that taste like bacon.
  17. Thanks for posting the vid. I could watch them for ages. The yakkas did look pretty relaxed, I some times find white bread soaked and mashed so it is like a milky cloud when you flick a small handfull into the trail fires them up.
  18. Welcome, good to see you getting keen. That rod and reel would be a good starting point but being land based I would look at a slightly longer rod. With a set up like that with say 10 pound braid you could handle just about anything from the locations you have named. Starting out you will be looking for utility value before you figure out what sort of fisho you want to develop into. Hell you could be chasing marlin from a charter boat or stalking wild bass or trout in a remote bush setting this time next year or next week. Good luck and remember you can not have too much gear, only too much to use.
  19. Pulled up a tunks about 4am. Thanks to my jump starter my morning didn't end there. Motored around to inside north head and thought I had better test my battery before heading outside. Shut down the 70 yammy and turned the key to hear a very energetic yammy jump to life in an instant. trolled around north head to find it very quiet. Pulled two cracken squid near bluenose when the fun began, a school of tiny kings buzzing my jig as it neared the boat. I grabbed a light flick stick with 6 pound braid and belted out a 4 inch stick bait. Tried a fast burn for nothing. Second cast tried a fast burn with a dead stop every 5 meters second pause and bang the braid sliced into my index finger, What was I thinking. Two little kings in three cast and I was happy as larry. Both fish around 40cm. I was thinking I could do this all day but the fish were gone. The day was beautiful low swell no chop no wind and sunny. Trolled around the headlands up to longy. Picked up a couple of big bonnies but not much else happening. Saw plenty of undersize kings caught and a few not released. my old man always said big bait big fish so I thought bugger it, the smallest bonnie went out as a livie and a squid head the size of my fist down deep for a slow troll. The squid head had a good hit, plenty of weight then nothing, dam. Put the other squid head on but couldn't find another taker. Fished longy for about 2 hours for a big baker before pulling the pin. Full throttle back to the harbour I noticed some bait skipping the surface near a line of froth leading from blue nose. I pulled up and started throwing a rooster popper to the area. cast after cast for nil, (typical fisho its home time and its one more cast then one more cast) on about my fifth 'last cast' I see a splash then nothing must have been the popper bloop. Bloop, Bloop, Belt im on. The fish goes hard and I start to think this could be a good fish. The thirty pound braid and stradic 6000 put an end to that, as soon as a I turned its head the fish did its best but to little affect, a nice little kingy just legal. by now I am already past my eta I had given the cheese and kisses so home it is. Fresh calamari and kingfish lovingly prepared for the family and inlaws put me back in the good books at home. All up nothing realy noteworthy but still a hell of a day on the water.
  20. Good one, good to see effort rewarded. Not that ignorance is an excuse but until recently I did not know there was a size limit on dollies. I have never caught one and was thinking of changing that this year and only just found out about the size limit while doing a bit of research. Apparently it came in in 2007. Hopefully these people only need a bit of education, I would like to think most fishos are responsible people(maybe I am deluded)
  21. Good report mate, with these water temps and a clean break/cut a wahoo may have flossed his teeth with your leader.
  22. Just a question, How many hooks on a rig are legal, I thought two baited hooks were the limit.
  23. Congrats, you r finding, catching squid and kings and mixing up techniques, its all up from there. Don't worry about getting funny looks. 30 years ago I got plenty of funny looks spinning the flats with dads bass lures, no one laughs now.
  24. google beach watch, should give u a good start
  25. Nice Christmas present. What kinda livies u get him on, and what depth did u hook it in if u don't mind me asking.
