  1. XD351 I’ll send you a pm Spoke to the guys at Budgiewoi BGS stands for ‘Bloody Good Stick’ it is a Butterworth Spiraflex is a Conolon and came out of the Kilwell factory in NZ. Earlier blanks were coated in a poohy brown to protect them from the sun.
  2. Some of the numbers on the rods I thought were model numbers are actually the date of the build. I looked up Budgiewoi Marine and Sports, The phone number is the same with the additional digit and area code. I’ll call today.
  3. Hi Raiders I picked up a few Dual Purpose rods today. They have both high and low reel mounts for Alvey or spin reel The green one is from Budgewoi Sports, built by B. Sommerville 12ft 6. Under the sand spike are letters BGS. The sandspike labeled 6138. The yellow is an SS138 Buttereorth I think the green is too The Maroon is labeled Spiraflex which I’m assuming is a Conolon blank from NZ but Custom built at Budgeoi by the same store Any info would be appreciated
  4. Nice work Jeff. Looked like it was going to be a good day.
  5. Middle Head from Manly Ditch work and get out there if you can
  6. It’s got 8 guides and the tip on the side of the backbone. The stripper is about 20mm external.
  7. Thanks guys, so not a bad score. Noelm I see the guides are on the light side so probably not LBG. Pete, Would the high mounted reel seat be suited for HSS?
  8. Hi Raiders We’re not getting any fish up here at Crescent Head in the floodwaters but did find this washed up on the beach. Looks like a custom build for an overhead reel. I think it’s a Butterworth, at 10ft could it be a LBG rod?
  9. Floodgates open at Limeburners
  10. Stay home anyone thinking of heading up. Stranded in Crescent and it could be days to get out. A lot of people much worse off.
  11. Looks good, I’m heading north for 3 weeks on Saturday 6/3 for 3 weeks. Boomerang, Crescent then Yamba.

    Enclosure

Hi Raiders Some might know I’ve got the naughtiest cat in the world. Lately he’s been fighting with the other Toms in the neighbourhood and coming off second best. After 3 trips to the vet and 1 to SASH after hours $$$$$$$ for treatment we decided it’s time to keep him in, for his sake and the neighbours. We have a pretty big back veranda and we rang around to get quotes to create a cat enclosure, the one responder quoted 4-5K??. It took me all weekend and it came in around $500. The company that makes the net also make commercial fishing nets, anyway pretty happy with the result.

  15. It’s a great video, you might also like Ron Calcutt’s The Rockhoppers.
  16. They are German, tackle shops and rod builders would import the blanks and make them up for domestic market. They also appear in the UK, Tony Fordham of Davenport and Fordham used Sportex blanks, along with Olivers of Knebworth and quite a few others. They were state of the art.

    Bird watching

A couple of weeks ago I watched a baby Channel Billed Cuckoo being fed by a pair of Currawongs, it really kept them busy just wouldn't shut up. Luckily there was a healthy population of cicadas in the area. I heard the parents come back to the area in Feb/March and call to the babies and they head back to Indo/New Guinea together. Brush Turkeys are showing up everywhere, my cat is very interested when they come into my yard. They are appearing in the eastern suburbs now and for a semi flightless bird it's hard to explain how they got over the harbour. I saw this White Bellied Sea Eagle at Newport, he had just caught a fish, probably Salmon. He flew past us about 4 times before going to the nest, he must have been showing off.
  18. I saw a Butterworth Blackfish Deluxe 2 piece recently for sale in burgundy, but it was pickup in Canberra. I have a Sportex 525 1 piece from Hayden's built as a Blackfish rod at 10'6" the tip is the same dimension as a 663 but the but is slightly bigger so the taper is faster and the action a little stiff. Found a very old Sportex 406 10ft in woodgrain 1 piece in an antique store in Huskisson I had built up as a whiting/blackfish rod. I recently picked up a couple of burgundy 5144L( light) 1 piece, (same dimension as Sportex 662) which I shared with Luderick Angler. I've got another black 1 piece Butterworth I think was known as a Rockhopper. Another recent acquisition 1 piece Butterworth SS4138 (surf spin) in burgundy which would make a great blackie rod. The 2 piece models in my collection are The Black Queen Deluxe with agate guides, Slazenger 38 from LA, and a Hank Newman Snyder Glas c144bf. Slazenger model 5 was a three piece I got for $5 at the tip went to my nephew. Snyder models Butterworth
  19. The Beatles, The Jackson 5 and the Osmonds had there own Cartoon and there was one with Rick Springfield.
  20. I agree with 2Sheds, it's scale. Pest Oil/ Eco Oil, but rather than spray, mix 30ml with 1/2 litre of water in a bucket, add 2 drops of dishwashing liquid and use a cloth to wipe the leaves clean. The dishwashing liquid helps emulsify the oil, but keep it to just a couple of drops. Do it outside or use a drop sheet.
