  1. What is the fuel bulb like on the fuel hose, my Mercury did the same thing, 80% throttle no problems but 100% throttle and it ran for about 500m then dies, primer bulb felt hard and look like new.

i found the inside of the bulb was collapsing at high revs and it would reduce the fuel flow. Very cheap to buy a new hose and fuel bulb, so I did that and it fixed it.

the other things to check are the fuel tank vent, if it’s a portable tank, see if the tank is compressing or suck in when running.

check the fuel filter and spark plugs

when you are going flat out try pumping the primer bulb on the tank and see if that fixes it as it maybe the fuel pump is weak.

  2. Hi all

i have been given my wife’s grandfathers fishing gear and not sure what to do with it or if it’s worth spending time on it.

Any tips on restoring the cane fishing tackle box.

Any of the reels pictured any good, if not I was going to clean them up and mount the in a frame for the man cave maybe with a rod since they are family heirlooms.

i have 2 x Jarvis Walker “The Scarbough” fiberglass rods

1 x Jarvis Walker “The Bidge”

2 other rods, one with the reel right at the bottom of the butt and the other looks like a bait caster rod.

    here is some Pics

We have flush down taps at the ramp, I could do it at home but why waste 20 cents worth of water ?

Well our ramp has little fresh water jets so as you pull out of the river it washes the underside of your trailer and Does Tyre shine as well.

    Too Far?

  4. So since I was out on the Harbour when I asked the question, when I got home I timed how long to see if my 5mins was accurate and hell I even tasted the tell tale just for a laugh.

12 minutes and the water didn’t taste salty. Gave it a few revs and then back to idle and shut it down.

but I didn’t lick my boat after washing figured it didn’t look salty so it would be fine.??

  5. My boat is 5.4m but on the trailer with the motor down is 7.13m or motor tilted up its 7.48m.

so I put it sideways in my current 6x6 garage with the motor down. Which I have to remember when dragging it out as I have dragged the leg twice as the driveway slopes.

As for height my bait board is the highest part at 2.48m. The windscreen is 2.2m from the ground. So my bait board clears the panel lift door just by 2cm if that.

i also cannot move my boat more forward on the draw bar, as it’s a bowrider and is already close to the tow ball and a swing draw bar would not give me much extra room as the bow sits well forward of the post.

So at my new house I’m building a garage to suit the boat ?

Thank you everyone for their advice.

Been reading through the comments and I've decided to up the budget and get a new 460 Renegade SC and 60 or 70 Yammie

So off to the boat show in 2 weeks and try to make a deal.

    Thanks again for the advice.

Here is my tip for the boat show purchase.

    1. Got to your local dealer before the show and look at the boat you want, sit in it walk around it, kick its tyres. Note any features you like or would change. Grab a brochure and have a chat.

    2. Pick your accessories and all the options you want and write them down. Have a must have and a wish list.

    3. Head to the Boat show with a pen / highlighter, grab the boat show dealer special flyer for the boat u want from each dealer and introduce yourself and have a chat to break the ice.

    4. Grab a coffee Read it and highlight everything you wanted and the write on the bottom what it’s missing from your wanted list.

    5. Have a chat and talk about quick chat about prices, tell them you are willing to pay a deposit there and then once you agree a price and product.

    6. Research current prices and deals, check the 2nd hand market for 1 or 2 yr old boats.

    7. Go on the web page and look at all the accessories,

    8. If unsure walk away and have a coffee, that’s what I did and my wife told the dealer, we just need to make sure it has everything he wants as he is not allow to buy boat stuff for a year afterwards.?

    9. Go to your local dealer last and when you at a price you like try and add more option, like upgrade from a 5” screen to a 7” screen, spare bung plugs, longer anchor rope, sealed underside of floor, rod holders, discount on spares or accessories in the shop at pick up (I got 15%) which helped with boat cover, wheel lock and tow ball lock purchase.

my wife did all my bargaining as I was so excited at getting a boat I would have signed anything thinking she might change her mind.?I think we got $2k of the price on the form and a few extras chucked in.

Wife just sent a picture of Nelson Bay, total opposite of Wednesday which was glass like and today choppy and windy as.

  8. I made the comment to my wife that the boat was the only place our 3 kids (12yr, 10.5yr and 6.5yr) don’t have IPods or game consoles stuck to their hands and even though they only have 5m x 2.1m to roam are not fighting with each other.

Nothing better than floating around with the family and friends outdoors, watching the scenery, sail boats and the odd fishing rod out the back,

makes me glad the wife talked me into the bowrider.

  9. Headed up to Shoal Bay for school holiday fun, arrived Sunday and with the wind the kids were not keen to head out in the boat, so we fished from the wharf for a small squid.

On Wednesday the wind was gone and the bay was like glass and the sun made it feel warmer than the 18deg predicted.

we went out from Shoal Bay about 9.30am (Headlights on low beam) ? the Dolphins in the bay were having a great time in the bow wave of our boat and in the wake at the back much to the kids and wife’s delight. No matter where we went they followed and jumped around.

cruised up the river to Hawks Nest and tried a bit of fishing while having a early lunch for zilch.

the did a full speed run down to Soldiers point and watched more dolphins herding bait fish. Need to see if recent issues have been fixed, so far so good.

My daughter managed a small Sole / Flounder and that was the only bite we had all day.

we then toured about a bit more before heading back to the Shoal bay ramp and home to wash the boat and down to the country club for a beer and dinner.

I drove back for work today and the kids and wife went whale watching,

Hope to get out in syd Harbour this weekend.

I've used presalted pilchards a month ago becasue they didn't have the regular ones. I didnt catch a bloody thing in a place I normally leave with sore arms and a full esky. So I won't rush out and buy more.

I find the same thing, Salted pilchard from a store and not one bite.

fresh Pilchards regular bites and fresh Mullet even more bites.

  11. I just put my 3rd bottle in so I have used 2.5 bottles in 75hrs, so about 9ltrs in 2.5yrs.

servicing is now yearly if you want the extra warranty, 3yrs or 300hrs is gone now.

mine is 2016 and I had the option 3yrs / 300hrs and 3yr warranty or yearly service and 5yrs warranty.

Great photos. I had a drone I was hoping to use for line-setting. Now it’s somewhere in the hills behind Tallow Beach. Somewhere.

I had a drone too! mine was a small one but it decided to blow away in the wind and I lot it in the neighbourhood, never to return. Didn't have a camera to see where it landed.

I have friends who use a drone for beach fishing, good for getting into deeper water.

  13. My old Savage had a few pin holes, more from heavy beaching and hitting rocks than corrosion though.

I only found them by pulling up the floor and me and the 3 kids launched the boat and tied off to the wharf and then all got in the boat to increase the weight and played draw a circle around the holes where water was coming in. Thankfully there was only 3 holes  up front near the keel and no more than 1mm each but it was amazing how much water they let in when fully loaded. Use a tube of Kneed it and all good for the next two years till I sold it.

Check for welds on the ribs when the floor is out and it will give you a idea on how much body flex it has.

Go over ferry waves to see who if will handle the chop if its a calm day

I'm betting its a late 80's model like 1988 from the look

  14. We used to do it every year and I would leave my car for 2 nights at Mooney Mooney and 3 mates left their cars with trailers as well for 2 nights.

We did sometime move them but usually only if they were in a crappy spot, we also put the wheel clamps on the wheels and tow ball locks as well. Also back the trailers in against a post or wall. Take your spare wheel of as well.

havent done it for a 3 year now but have heard of a few trailers being stolen or stripped.

i think if we do it again we will use Paisley Bay, better ramp but like all ramps it’s still a risk.

  15. They do come on sale often at supercreep which makes them more affordable.

just check the manufacturer date and fluid levels.

  16. A 4 Stroke is serviced yearly / XX hours the same as a Etec, it just cost a little more than a Etec, but not much extra when you factor in the 2 stroke XD100 oil from Evinrude they recommend is $75 for 4ltrs (It last a long time).

Etecs used to have a first service interval of 3yrs or 300hrs with a 3yr warranty, but now as they are sold through Telwater if you get them service every year Evinrude gives you 2yrs extra warranty so you get a 5yr warranty.

All Outboards from the major suppliers, Mercury, Evinrude, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda are all quality items, like all mechanical items they can have duds and poor mechanics can make that even worse, its how they fix them that makes a difference.

So it not just one brand that can have issues, each one if you google will have scary stories, but its only the upset customers who vent the 1000's of happy ones don't post negative reports.

Also note where the local service agent for the brand you want is located, nothing worse than driving 1hr to get it serviced, especially if you have to do it often, ha ha ha like me.

  17. No worries as I said mine was probably the servicing agent, my mates 130 Etec has never been serviced in 3yrs and hasn’t missed a beat in 130hrs.

Good luck with Yamaha they are also a good engine and quiet.

  18. Hi

This ignites a similar debate like Ford V Holden.

I would go the 4 stroke and the lighter one as 5hp isn't worth it, the only reason I would and did go the Etec is because its lighter I was able to have 15HP more than the 4 stroke option and it makes a huge difference when loaded and the engine works less.

My Etec is good on fuel, not sure on oil as I seem to be buying 4ltr bottle often, am monitoring it.

Would I buy another Etec, probably not, maybe I have bought a lemon but I mainly think its been my servicing dealer that's been my issue, changed servicing places last month but have only used it once, so will see,

When it runs right its good but I have lost faith in the engine ( Towed twice and alarms on 4 other occasions in 78hrs) to the point I am worried about going out side the heads and my kids worry about breaking down and being stranded again.
